The first photos from the set of Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein have surfaced, featuring Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role playing Igor.

Frankenstein, which was penned by Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis, is a reimagining of the classic story from the perspective of Dr. Victor Von Frankenstein’s assistant, Igor. Radcliffe is joined in the film by James McAvoy as the doctor, while Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Findlay Brown will play the female lead who grows close with Igor. Director Paul McGuigan has previously directed Push, Lucky Number Slevin, and most recently, BBC’s Sherlock

The Daily Mail has debuted the first image of Radcliffe from the set of Frankenstein, as we finally have a glimpse at the character. The long hair and period wardrobe is certainly an intriguing look, and we’ll be sure to keep track of this film and Radcliffe’s involvement as it nears closer to release.

Radcliffe described the script in a recent interview as “the most original script I’ve read coming out of a studio since finishing Potter.”

Radcliffe added of the script: “[Landis has] taken the mythologies that we all think we know – we have this idea of a monster and a crazy scientist and kind of a hunchbacked assistant – but we don’t really know where all these parts came from. I think what Max [Landis] has done with this is first of all he’s given Igor a backstory which you never really see before. And so, that’s I think one of the biggest differences is that you’ll finally see him granted a life and a backstory and it’s about these two young guys at the forefront of science.”

‘Frankenstein’ is set for a January 16, 2015 release date

    mmmm….
I’m really excited to see this movie because on theory, it sounds really cool.

But the moment they said that Igor was going to get a love interest doubts began to creep in.

these pictures are not diminishing those doubts at all. that doesn’t look like igor- at all- that looks like a 18th century willy wonka look.

Radcliffe obviously doesn’t mind taking risks with his appearance, so i’m blaming this solely on the production team because seriously? IGOR. but No…”we definitely have to include a love interest for Igor because movies have to include love interests! *eye roll*
    and

“No we can’t have a repugnant looking bald-hunchback mismatch eye igor- let’s make him a Lestat the vampirelookalike!

Granted it’s not a bad look (awkard one but not terrible) if he was just plain ol’ 18th century gentleman in a gothic movie.

but again- IGOR- hunchback, bald and mismatch eye igor.

    *Massive eye roll*

from now on i’m going to think this to be a crack movie (like Van Helsing was) nstead of srs bssnss movie.

But I loved van helsing :(

        Hugh jackmen ftw

      • Alex

FYI I LOVE van helsing. It’s one of my favorite movies, but you can’t deny it’s a little crack (much like hansel&gretel:witch hunters is crack; or even Abraham Lincoln: vampire hunter THAT one is pure crack)

By crack I don’t mean bad, I mean its full of the genre cliches and over the place wackiness and Owns it and makes it fun.

(To see exactly what I mean, google up cleolinda’s van helsing in 15 minutes, you’ll understand)

Igor is a made up character anyways, he wasn’t a part of the original story of Frankenstein so who’s to say what he looks like or supposed to be. Even the other characters are going to be re-jiggled somewhat anyways, this is going to be a different take. Thank god, i’m not particularly interested in seeing an exact remake of the original story, i’m seeing this one because Danrad’s in it. Want to see what he can do.

Just the fact it’s being released in January makes me a little nervous about this. Generally nothing that good comes out in the dead zone of January and February

Yeah Dan hasn’t been doing any major known films so I’m worried he’s gonna stay doing indies.

      • http://www.youtube.com/mapthestars Mapthestars

I don’t think Dan would mind if that happened.

        • Amir

I know but I really want him to not be typecasted :/ everyone I know knows him as Harry potter. :/

      • Alex

he seems to like good projects no matter the type of movie.

so i doubt he`ll stick to just one

It was originally slated for an Oct. 2014 release but was pushed back due to time.

      • alex

I thought the october release date was for the F word? or that other reppy alexander aja movie?

        • http://hypable.com/author/jeremy-baril/ Jeremy Baril

Not sure about the others, but Frankenstein was originally slated for Oct. I guess my point is that it was pushed to Jan. due to production, not quality.

I believe there is a Dracula movie coming out in October and they might have thought the market saturation would work against them.

It is unfortunate because October is a better release date obviously. And if they thought it was worthy of that date to start then I don’t see why they would have changed their minds due to anything quality-related. It’s not like they had even started rehearsing when they changed the date.

Did he borrow that purple suit from Dumbledore? :)
