In a new interview, Saul Goodman actor Bob Odernkirk says the Breaking Bad prequel may actually be a sequel to the meth drama. Or a prequel and a sequel.
“I’ve talked to Vince (Gilligan) and Peter (Gould), who are writing and creating the series, about this and I’ve said that a lot of people do want to see what happens to next to Saul,” Odenkirk told IGN. “So, I don’t know what they’re going to do. I know they’ve talked about prequel, but they’ve also talked to me about sequel, and they’ve also talked to me about a mix of prequel and sequel.”
Viewers of Breaking Bad will remember that during the series’ finale, which aired at the end of September, Saul was given a new lease on life in Nebraska where he – in the lawyer’s words – could be “managing a Cinnabon in Omaha” if he was lucky enough to legally survive the Albuquerque mayhem. This means that for the show to be a sequel, Saul would either have to find his way back to Albuquerque or the new show will be set in Nebraska.
We have to think that, while a sequel would be intriguing, if Saul truly went to Nebraska then he would absolutely have to get back to Albuquerque before the spinoff can get into the heart of the story.
We know that Better Call Saul plans to shoot in Albuquerque. Creator Vince Gilligan said in a separate interview that part of the reason he’s doing the spinoff is so that he can reunite with the New Mexico crew.
It’s surprising that the show runners still aren’t sure where to send Saul given that the show should be hitting the writers room in the next couple of months. Perhaps Odenkirk is working off of a conversation he had with Gilligan and Gould a while ago and they’ve since come to a conclusion.
The Breaking Bad spinoff does not have a premiere date yet.
