In another interview promoting his newest book, House of Hades, author Rick Riordan says his two main characters will be facing some serious challenges.
The interview comes via the Associated Press. “Disney Hyperion has announced a first printing of 2.5 million copies,” they report, “and the 600-page novel already is in the top 5 on Amazon.com.”
At the end of the previous book, Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy fell over the edge of a pit and into the Underworld. They must trek through the dangerous world in order to reach the safety of the Doors of Death before their friends have to close them forever.
“I don’t think Percy and Annabeth have gone through anything as serious as what they’re going to face now,” Riordan tells AP. If this section that Riordan read out loud for fans is anything to go by, we have no doubt that the two main characters will have a lot to deal with in House of Hades.
The other bit of notable news from the interview is that Riordan’s anthology of Greek myths narrated by Percy, as we reported on previously, will debut in August, 2014. The tentative title of the collection is Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods, and it will be for kids (and adults!) who want to learn more about the myths found in the Percy Jackson world, but can’t quite make it through Homer and his contemporaries.
If you can’t wait until the October 8 release date, know that you can read the first chapter of House of Hades right now.

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?
Article Continues BelowThey have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.
