The 2013 Oscar race just got a little less tight.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Classics has announced that they are moving Foxcatcher from its announced December 20, 2013 release to an unnanounced 2014 date.
Related: Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street is also likely to be bumped to 2014.
Apparently the filmmakers didn’t have enough time to finish the film before its scheduled November 8 world premiere. It’s unclear if they’d have had time to finish it by the end of December, but they’ve opted to pull it so it can get a proper Oscar push next year.
A trailer had been released yesterday to rave reaction, but it is no longer available for viewing.
Those who had seen the trailer noted that Steve Carell in particular looked very good. Deadline says that the select few who have seen the unfinished film were saying the same thing, but perhaps with even more excitement. Odds are that the extra year could give Carell a decent Oscar push.
In a true story, Foxcatcher also stars Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark and Dave Schultz, respectively. Carell’s John du Pont is their coach, and the weird relationship between them eventually leads to murder.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“Foxcatcher” tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz (Tatum), who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave (Ruffalo) and a life of poverty when he is summoned by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Carell) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Desperate to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, du Pont begins “coaching” a world-class athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral. Based on actual events, “Foxcatcher” is a gripping and profoundly American story of fragile men who pinned their hopes for love and redemption on a desperate obsession for greatness that was to end in tragedy.
