Apple’s iOS 7 download is now available for newer iOS devices, and there are changes throughout the system that Apple hasn’t told you about.

We’ve had some time to play with iOS 7 and found new features that will vastly improve one’s daily mobile life.

Block a number

Haters, beware! In iOS you can now block a number in your contacts. To do so, head to the person’s contact page and scroll to the bottom. There, you’ll see an option to block a number’s calls, SMS/iMessages, and FaceTime requests. The contact must remain in your phone so the person can remain blocked, and you can unblock them once they apologize to your face (unless that restraining order was approved).

Put Newsstand in a folder

You never wanted to use it, and to make matters worse you couldn’t put it into a folder. Now, Newsstand can be hidden away so that you never have to look at that thing. Who wants to read magazines on a mobile device anyway?

App switching now has live previews

When you double-click your home button to see your open applications, you will now see what each of the applications is up to. Simply swipe left or right to browse through your open apps. To close one, swipe up and “throw it” away.

Swipe right instead of hitting the ‘Back’ arrow

No longer do you have to reach all the way up to the top left to hit the back arrow within an app. Now, just swipe from left to right to go back to the latest page.

‘Spotlight’ is now at the top of the home screen

Instead of existing as a page on your home screen to the far left, Spotlight has moved to the top of all home screen pages. To access, swipe down from anywhere on the home screen (but not the very top, because then you’ll pull down notification center).

View text history even when the reply window is full

You’ve been there before. You type a long-winded response to a friend, but before sending the message you need to see what else your friend said. If your reply window was full, you couldn’t hide the keyboard to view the rest of the text history unless you pressed ‘Send’ or temporarily cut your text.

You can now view text history before sending. To do so, swipe down from the contact’s name to hide the keyboard.

View times for every text message

If you need to know how long its been in between text messages (“Is she ignoring me?” “How long has it been since I last nagged him?”), you can now swipe left to peek at each text message’s timestamp. Previously, iOS decided on its own which timestamps to display and which not to.

‘Today’ view in Notification Center

iOS now provides you with a glance at what’s on tap for you today using your Calendar, Weather, and Maps apps. With default iOS 7 settings turned on, iOS will learn about your daily routine and is able to tell you how long it will take you to get from your frequently-visited physical locations (i.e. work, school commute times).

‘Control Center’

You now have quick access to commonly used settings like WiFi on/off, Bluetooh on/off, calculator, camera, and flashlight. To access, simply swipe up from the bottom of your screen.

If you accidentally open Control Center too often, there is a setting to let you disable Control Center within apps. With this setting turned on, you can only access Control Center from the home screen.

iOS 7 download

You can now download iOS 7 for free starting today. To do so, load up your iOS device and go to Settings -> General -> Software Update. Make sure your data is backed up before you download iOS 7!

iOS 7 review

By far the biggest iOS 7 feature is its all-new design which brings the operating system up to modern times. However, these new looks didn’t distract us from the fact that the operating system doesn’t boast many big new features. There are many under the hood improvements like better background app management to hopefully preserve battery life and little changes like the ones noted above, but overall we feel that Apple takes too long to add these types of improvements.

We would like to see Apple unveil two big iOS versions a year so that they’re running a better competition with Android OS. Google’s operating system seems to always be a step ahead of Apple in terms of features, and it’s time for Apple to catch up and stay ahead.

  • Ben_Holmquist

    Love the conversation with Mason.

  • Mike

Unfortunately, I can’t download on my phone since my WiFi hasn’t worked in months. So, gotta wait for iTunes to catch up

    • Nicole

Just make sure your iTunes has the latest update and from there connect your phone and update through there. Very fast too.

    • Arialle Wein

Actually, this could be a hardware problem. Has happened to me twice where the Wifi greys out. Applecare will give you a new phone.

  • Angie

So many of these updates are things they should have had years ago! Apple is definitely playing catchup

  • Riana-Tiana Menezes

I’ve had an Android phone for a about a year now and I already have all these features in my phone. Every single one.
    Apple is pretty behind.

    • Paul Fumea

Theres no block app on any droid automatically unless you download or pay for it through service

      • Icequeen

I have it on my android. And it came with the operating system.

      • alazear2

Umm actually there is on the S3 and I’m assuming the S4 (and possibly others. I don’t know I have an S3). Its called the reject list. you simply go to the contact, and select them for the list, preventing them from calling you. Riana is actually correct in her assessment. When it comes to features in the OS apple has lagged behind Android for awhile now.

    • D.

So why are you commenting on an Apple thread? You must be fun at parties…

      • Riana-Tiana Menezes

Oh you bet, I’m a dancing queen!

And its not like I’m an Apple basher, I’m just making an observation.

      • Andi Thomas

like a bmw driver who secretly wishes they bought a merc!

  • Laura Jurgensmeyer

So excited! I can’t wait until I get home from work and connect to Wifi! Though you could already view text history if you typed a long message by swiping down…that’s not new.

  • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

The new sounds and dynamic backgrounds have been a long time coming! Subtle upgrades that make the phone feel fresh.

  • Lucas Brown

Oh my god, andrew. I’m so glad you featured your wizard wrock.

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

That’s been stored in the notes on my phone for YEARS. That “I’m Andrew Sims for MuggleNet.com” was a script I wrote on the Half-Blood Prince set visit, lol.

  • Lillie Marie Peterson

Thanks Andrew! You highlighted some of the lesser known features it probably would have taken me a while to figure out.

  • Sarah

Man, now I really want to see what Mason texted yesterday.

  • Sarah Gilligan

So I have been trying to block people through the method you’ve written about for twenty minutes or so, but that option has never showed up on the Contact’s Info page.

I have to go Settings > Phone > Blocked > Add New to actually block a contact.

Thought I’d bring it up in case other people are attempting to block people, but were unable.

  • Cguy

This is all very good except for one problem: it’s taking too freakin’ long to install!

  • Nick_BD

Just downloaded it, I do like iOS7 so far. My only problem is the music
app, searching through artists if you have hundreds of songs could get
    annoying.

    • RamblingBabbles

May I ask why it is annoying? I haven’t updated yet because I’m kind of wary of the new icons. I am not a fan of the flat icons. I’m trying to read about the added features to encourage me to update but a buggy music player might do the opposite.

      • Nicholas Salatino

I have not noticed any bugs whatsoever. I was a little wary of the new icons, but I got used to it and it was definitely worth updating for all the new features.

      • BrownPeace

I don’t like the color of the icons. Kind of cartoonish. :-/

      • alexa

this is why i haven’t updated either
i read that they think the flatter ones look cool but i hate it i love the bubble ones!
also i hate how the text messages look flat and weird

  • ConnorF42

Hm I can’t find the block option

    • Lucy Hopko

I can block from my contacts.. you have to click on the contact and then scroll to the bottom.. It’s father down than anything else

      • ConnorF42

You can do it from phone app contacts but not contact book app apparently

        • Sarah Gilligan

          Well that’s just dumb.
Hopefully they fix that with a patch or something.

  • Amir Khan

Lol my Samsung galaxy s3 has had these things for as long as I could remember..

    • D.

So why are you commenting on an Apple thread then? Trolling? You must be very proud…

      • Amir Khan

Well I have an iPod. I’m an apple and android person. Just saying that android seems to be getting ahead of apple because of Steve jobs death.

        • Liderc

I’m honestly surprised to see Apple is just getting these features. I’ve probably had these features on my Nexus since 2010-11. Just seems like they need to focus on software for a bit and get the upgrades going out quicker.

Hardware can only be improved so much and now that the iPhone has an incredible screen/camera/processor and now apparently a great battery, they need to focus on software a bit.

  • Garrett Pletcher

So did Soozie and Harold break up??

    • alexa

literally i ship Soozie and Harold i need to know how this story ends how can they just leave us hanging like that

  • Wil Arends

My school’s wifi crashed today because like the whole school was trying to download it.

  • Bookluver1208

I think the one thing that I dont like about this update is that podcasts don’t show up in the music app now. I had to download the podcast app, which isnt good, and it sucks not having everything in one place.

    • Lucy Hopko

That happened in the last update too

  • mrbofus

“You can now view text history before sending. To do so, swipe down from the contact’s name to hide the keyboard.”

Hasn’t that been there since iOS 6?

  • upper_westsider

Hey Andrew, how’s John Noe doing? So far I like IOS7 a lot. Easy to navigate and text seems easier to read. Not crazy about the Music app. I have tons of songs in iTunes on my laptop, but I’ve only download a few to my phone. IOS7 lists every song from iTunes on my phone. Don’t need all that, but I like everything else I’ve seen.

  • tmservo

Do like the live previews/etc. which as others have noted have existed elsewhere for a while (like my WP) but it works very well here. OS seems to run very smooth on my Ipad4… But I do dislike the Spotight as a down swipe EXCEPT if you’re in the top 10% of screen space, then it’s the notification center. All too often I want the search and I get the today.. I know, could swipe lower, but it’s a force of habit. That will take a while.

  • Heya

How long would it take to download ios7?

  • http://shanadebusschere.tumblr.com/ Shana Debusschere

I never had an iphone, but I have a windows phone (the most basic one) and it has all of these features I think. Not the blocking though, I’m not sure.

  • http://shanadebusschere.tumblr.com/ Shana Debusschere

The question is; Andrew, are you and Mason ‘over’, or not?

  • b

Kind of hate the new interface. The app icons look like cartoons. I like cartoons, but not on my phone

  • tdouglas

Its all personal preference. The world would be a better place if everyone quit bashing products.

  • Mandie Lenar

I love that you listen to The Format I didn’t know anyone listened to that.

  • Kenny Strawn

Don’t know about anyone else, but when I updated this 4S (which I got in December 2012… oh, well), I actually got a “Spotlight had Moved” tooltip pop up on the screen…

  • Chantal

LOVED reading the phone clips. So awesome, Andrew!

  • https://twitter.com/maramawhyte Marama Whyte

YOU CAN PUT NEWSSTAND IN A FOLDER NOW!?

  • alexa

If i download iOS 7 all my info isn’t gunna be deleted right? cause i keep getting a pop up saying something like “There is too much data to back up” and im scared im gunna update it and find a blank phone

  • seenu

How to cut the cal with soft key, when i got the cal if my ph is locked

  • SS2015

iOS 7 is shit There’s a reason why I left my droid to come back to Apple and this iOS 7 shit happens My apple products are all fucked up and my phone is so slow it’s not funny Apple really needs to rethink what they did and change the design back and make it better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • joecassara

I enjoy using Newsstand, and it contains more than just magazines. Can the snark, kid.
