Beloved Orange is the New Black cast member Laura Prepon will only appear in one episode of season 2.

Several weeks ago word broke that Prepon would have a reduced role in Orange is the New Black season 2, but until now we didn’t know she would appear in just one episode.

The actress will be in the show just long enough to send her character out. At this time it’s not clear how they’ll be able to send Alex away from the prison in just one hour-long story line in a way that would be satisfying to the audience. It’s worth noting that her episode has not been shot yet despite the fact that the rest of the cast has been filming since July, so perhaps they’re spending a good amount of time figuring out her removal.

The reason Prepon is leaving? That’s not clear, but we do know that she had initially signed on for a one-year contract and then decided to not re-up for season 2.

News of Prepon’s departure was first reported by Buzzfeed, who also broke today’s story.

A release date for Orange is the New Black season 2 has not been announced, but the show debuted in July 2013 so we can expect the second run to air in spring/summer 2014.

Although Alex and Piper had separated romantically by the end of season 1, do you think Prepon should’ve stayed to play out their storyline further? Or, does this feel like an appropriate time for her to leave?

    Sad face!

  • sarahd15

I love her character! Very unhappy she isn’t staying on as a regular again…

    • Skylar Graham

      AGREED

  • Ali Ailport

I don’t feel like their story is resolved at all. I’m very skeptical that her leaving will make sense to the audience.

i think they are trying get back to the originality of the book where Laura’s character really didn’t feature in Pipers prison life since they were in totally different prisons.
Maybe the first season was a test season and Kohan did her best to get the audiences interested and now that they are …. well maybe its time for her to go.

      • grapes9h5

actually they were cellmates at one point in real life

        • http://hunyumstan.tumblr.com/ hunyum

yep … my words (i realize now) were not entirely properly stated.

      • Jeanette Lamb

That’s not accurate. They were not only in the same prison, but shared the same cell.

    • Mike

I think the writers should put in the story that alex vega gets transfered due to can’t have 2 codefendants in the same prison which the audience will understand..

  • alex

    Damn scientologists

  • Diggles

Ugh! I wanted to see where the friendship with Nick was going to go. I don’t like this!

  • Laura Jurgensmeyer

    I’m…actually okay with this.

    Nooo!!! I love her :(

  • rachelgurl19

Wow this sucks she is part of why i enjoy it so much

    • Becky Britt

      Same here!

  • Mayra Amaya

It never made sense on a realistic level, her being in the same prison as Piper the woman she named in her deposition. They usually have rules for that sort of thing set up in real prison…I’m glad I got that off my chest.

But I do have to say I did enjoy her performance and relationship with Piper.

    • grapes9h5

      it happened in real life

    • Mike

You are right Mayra hopefully in season 2 the writers fixes some inconsistencies like Mendez would get fired and arrested in real life for having sex with an inmate. Also they need to cast a warden.

  • Lauren Chapin

So sad! But it sort of makes sense, I get the feeling with the events in the last episode, Piper may be in a new position now…. At lease at the beginning of the next season.

  • Molly

I’ll miss her character, but not her eyebrows.

    • Chrissy

      MOST ACCURATE COMMENT EVER

  • kallie

Piper and Alex relationship is the reason for watching this show! Know your audience people! Don’t screw up! xD

    • guestly

The show is based in Piper’s actual memoirs, and it’s Prepon’s decision to not renew her contract. So I’m not sure your need for dysfunctional relationship drama really can weigh in here, even if it was important.

  • Mrs_Badcrumble

    // SPOILER //

After watching the last episode and reading this news I really thought Piper would be removed to another prison, like a high security prison (because of what happened on the last moments of the last episode). That would mean Alex would indeed stop being a part of her daily life, even though she could still appear in flashbacks, specially since her story with Piper doesn’t seem resolved at all.

    • http://thetams.tumblr.com/ Sasha

I don’t think they’ll do that. It would mean replacing the whole cast. Which would be a bad idea because most people aren’t watching for Piper’s story – they’re watching for everybody else’s.

      • Mrs_Badcrumble

Yeah, that’s true. I know I want to see the other character’s backstory, and how Red reacts to her new position, and so on. But at least Piper will have to spend quite some time in the Shoe (I don’t know if it’s spelled like this…). I mean, they discipline the in-mates for much less than what she did… We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m sorry that Alex has to leave so abruptly.

    • aimee.gal

My thoughts would be (to remove Alex)…Alex takes the blame or gets the blame and they send her off to the max security prison.

      • Gabe Stackhouse

Eh, that’s too easy and lazy; two things this show is not. Just throwing the blame on Alex would be cheap and insulting to the viewers.

They’ll give her a proper sendoff somehow. It’s a shame that they have to, though. She really disappeared into that role.

  • Shadowstare

I love Laura Prepon on the show. I hated Alex in the beginning but loved her toward the end. With her only on the show for the first episode next season….I really REALLY hope Alex is moved from the prison for some reason and not *Redacted* because of that last scene.

  • Skylar Graham

    WHAT THE HECK, NOOOOOO.

  • Katherine Marie

It’s weird, I never realized how hot Laura Prepon was until I saw her as a sociopathic lesbian. I will truly miss the sexual tension she brings, however, the show will carry on just fine without her. Hopefully we see Laura again some time in the future {as I can see this continuing on for many seasons}. Since That 70′s Show, Prepon’s resume has been a bit lacking. OITNB could have been the best thing to happen to her career… in leaving, she may come to realize that.

    • Gabe Stackhouse

That’s exactly what my feeling on this is. I loved That 70′s Show, and as a result I want all the actors to succeed. Most have, but Prepon hasn’t found footing in anything since the show ended. It was a joy being able to watch her in such a high-quality show again, so it baffles me that she’s leaving.

Why get rid of a good thing?

  • yesreally

uncool as I am, glad she’s out. it’s appropriate timing and I’m sure Alex’s “business” pursuits will factor in.

  • Gabe Stackhouse

I really hope this doesn’t turn out to be true, but the evidence doesn’t support my wishful thinking.

She was one of the reasons I enjoyed the show so much. It was a joy being able to watch her again since That 70′s Show ended. I’ll really miss her character. Hopefully she makes guest appearances or comes back in later seasons.

  • annonymous

piper and alex’s relationship was the only real interesting thing about the show. i know most people watched this one hour series just to wait for their scene to pop up. it’ll be a REAL shame to let her go and viewers might start leaving.

  • Cassandra

Bring back the lady who choked the guard – she was interesting. I totally got hooked on this show after Andrew praised it on Hype – thanks Andrew!

  • Person

I don’t think there’ll be much of a show without her; she’s the reason a good portion of people watched it the first place, or kept watching it. Not that it has no good stories outside of their relationship, but… come on.

  • Becky Britt

    They need to keep her!

  • LisaNicoleGossett

THIS IS BS!!!!!!!!! ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I CANT WAIT THAT LONG FOR SEASON TWO TO COME OUT! lmao

  • bundtrock

I just finished watching the full season 1 on Netflix. Interesting, overall good acting. What I did walk away with was thinking this Piper woman is a total idiot and her own worse enemy. I do not feel sorry for her in the least, she cannot learn, she is just rock hard stupid. She sabotages herself at every turn and thinks she is so principled? She is a common felon, nothing more, just like all the rest of the inmates in that Federal prison. Yes, the body waste with the COs and the Administration really happens the way it is presented, absolutely. It is a PRISON, they are criminals, they are not there to live their life, they are there to be housed and PUNISHED.

Piper is nothing more than a drug mule, money launderer and I am not buying at age 22 she was naive and innocent and didn’t “understand” of course she fully understood what she was doing and don’t waste my time with that love nonsense. She has screwed in every sense of the word, her ex girlfriend and fellow inmate and her fiance, she is a consummate liar. With her college background, she was handed a good life on a silver platter and chose “excitement” “adventure” and life screwed her, end of story.

I like the show, but I do not feel empathy for any of the women in there, not one. Do the crime, be willing to do the time and NO EXCUSES.

  • Onecaribbeansoul

Shes hot … Love the eyebrows … Love the attitude .. Love the sexual tension she brings …sad she is leaving. Still going to watch … I think the fiancee needs to go …
OITNB is NOT an accurate representation of prison life. Ladies … Please don’t think it is that nice!

  • Faye Green

OK, the last episode, the girls had a falling out and went their own ways. In season 2 episode 1, Alix did something to warrant a transfer to another prison… there she is out of the picture. Now that is bowing out gracefully.

In season 1 last episode, There was a christmas pageant going on, people felt betrayed by Piper, Tiffany has it in for Piper and threaten to kill her. Piper went outside in the snow, she was being followed by Tiffany (drug addict turned delusional) tried to stab Piper and Piper went all hell-bent crazy and beat the crap out of Tiffany, left her there bleeding and maimed and saw Sam Healy who turned away.

In season 2 episode 1: they should have tiffany all bruised and with battle scars emerging out of the prison clinic, Piper should be in the solitary, Alex did something terrible to transfer her to another prison.

I know it won’t be the same, it would get monotonous after a while. Just like life.. it needs to be changed up a bit.

We’ll see who this whole thing goes, either make it or break it.

  • Me

Thank God she was so awkward and creepy ew.

  • ScottM

Money is the reason. Laura wants more and Netflix refuses to give it to her.

  • sad

I want Alex and Piper together. I despise Larry; he has no personality to him but Alex is so funny and not to mention hot ;3
