If there is one thing that Aaron Sorkin does well it’s write a good one liner, and last night’s episode of The Newsroom was chock full of them. Here are a few of our favorites.
Jim: “All these years, what did you think off-the-record meant?”
Jim and Hallie have something special going on, and we would love to see Grace Gummer return next season for more banter between her and Jim. Plus, Jim needs something good in his life.
Will: “I’ve appointed myself in charge of morale.”
You can almost feel the irony dripping from this statement as Will tries to disarm a volatile Charlie.
Charlie: “There is no bright side, Father Flanagan. Don’t finish that sentence!”
Is there anything funnier than an angry Charlie? Yeah, we didn’t think so either.
Charlie: “Why don’t you just set yourself on fire instead of the cigarette?”
Will: “One’s enjoyable to me, and the other would cause a lot of pain.”
Will and Charlie are an unbeatable duo on this show. Their witty repartee is only matched by Elliot and Sloan, of which we desperately want to see more.
Elliot: “Is there an ancient grudge between your two families?”
The anger between Jim and Taylor is palpable, as is perfectly illustrated here by Elliot’s timely quip.
Elliot: “Be less desperate for female friends!”
Oh Elliot, you were in rare form in tonight’s episode. Here’s to hoping that we will get more and more of him in future seasons.
Will: “You look like you were grown in an environment that’s cold and damp.”
This is only funny because it is unbelievably true. Mac is looking more than a little rundown after the crazy events of the Genoa debacle.
Mac: “King George forgave AMERICA in less time than it’s taken you!”
Will could very well be the record holder for longest kept grudge, and Mac’s frustration over the unreasonable amount of time that Will chooses to remain mad about something is more than understandable.
Charlie: “Our elections are the envy of the world. It’s critically important that we not make any mistakes tonight.”
As great as the funny quotes are in this episode, this scene where Charlie shows the reality of how important our elections are to people around the world is downright touching.
Reese: “My mom says I can’t.”
It doesn’t matter what Reese wants to do. Leona Lansing is in charge, and she says no. It must be horrifically frustrating to have to answer to your mother at work.
Jim: “Your hair is the color of goodness.”
There is only one word to describe Jim… precious. He is adorably precious when it comes to anything not related to a news broadcast or political scandal.
Don: “This is some good television.”
Don and Elliot may rival Mac and Will for our favorite anchor/EP team. It’s hard to believe that Don started the first season as a bit of a jerk, especially now that we have completely fallen for him.
Don: “You are a member of a godless, soulless race of extortionists.”
We’re sure this isn’t the first time Rebecca Halliday has heard something like this, and it most certainly won’t be the last.
Elliot: “She is an enemy of all that is good.”
Yeah, we definitely need more of these two next season. Elliot and Sloan’s banter is absolutely infectious. Heck, they should have their own show.
Will: “Remember what I said before about my personal politics? Forget it. Take me apart.”
This quote sets up what is sure to be an absolutely stunning ending to an already impressive second season. Now, do we really have to wait another week for the finale?
