Fans of Will McAvoy and the ACN news team had grown worried over the past few weeks as HBO remained silent on a renewal. Typically the pay channel will renew a show shortly after the first couple episodes of the current season, but that was not the case during The Newsroom season 2’s early days.
Presumably The Newsroom season 3 will premiere in summer 2014 – about the same time the previous two seasons commenced.
The show took a break from airing new episodes this past Sunday for the Labor Day weekend, but the remaining two episodes will air Sunday, September 8 and Sunday, September 15 on HBO. They will follow ACN’s coverage of the November 2012 Presidential Election. We will also see the tale of the Genoa tip come to an end.
Season 2 only has nine episodes, and at this time it’s not clear if HBO will order more or less for the third outing. Presumably Sorkin will want to keep it around the same number of episodes for the sake of maintaining a tight storyline.
Also unclear is what real news stories The Newsroom will cover, but we’re sure Sorkin will shed light on those details as he and his team return to the writers room.
