Pop music producer Dr. Luke appears poised to join the American Idol season 13 judging table when the show premieres in January.
Deadline reports that Dr. Luke is closing his deal and will sit next to season 12 judge Keith Urban and season 11 returning judge Jennifer Lopez as Fox looks to revamp the show and bring back viewers.
One problem with Dr. Luke: He’s not recognizable by the general public. Even though they may not’ve seen him much before, they do know his work. Dr. Luke has produced and co-wrote several huge songs including Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” “I Kissed A Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” and Britney Spears’ “Circus.”
Will the producer be able to help ratings? Our guess is no unless he can connect with viewers in a way that Simon Cowell did in the early days of American Idol when he was an unknown face to viewers.
Idol will likely place a fourth judge at the table, but who that may be is unclear. We know that Fox was considering using former show winners at the table like Jennifer Hudson or Adam Lambert. At one point it looked like the network was thinking about using a table that is nothing but former winners. Obviously, that did not pan out.
Is Dr. Luke an intriguing addition to Idol, in your opinion?
Earlier this week we learned that Randy Jackson may return to the show as a mentor replacing Jimmy Iovine.
Thanks, Deadline.
