On last night’s Breaking Bad (season 6, episode 2/season 5, episode 10), Walter White decided to bury his money at a location only he would know.
The coordinates read, repeated, and then left on a lottery ticket by White don’t point to a real location in the Albuquerque desert, we’ve discovered.
They point to Albuquerque Studios located at 5650 University Boulevard Southeast, Albuquerque, NM 87106. You can see the location here:
Why would the writers use coordinates that don’t accurately represent where he put the money? We suspect that they didn’t want fans to head out to the location in the desert and begin digging. It’s a safe (and legal) way to protect the natural, Navajo land they used from people who may be tempted to give themselves a tour.
The decision to place it at a film studio is a great easter egg. Albuquerque Studios is where the television has shot many scenes throughout its five season history. Interior scenes like the Walter White home and Saul’s office were probably shot there. It’s a tribute of sorts to the city’s shooting options.
Albuquerque Studios has also been used for major Hollywood films like The Avengers, The Lone Ranger, and The Host.
It remains to be seen whether or not Walt will ever return to pick up his money that he buried deep in the desert. It took a tremendous amount of work to get all the money covered, and it’ll only be harder to dig it back up unless he has some help.
Breaking Bad season 6, episode 3 “Confessions” airs Sunday, August 25 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC. Read our recap of Sunday’s new episode here.
