Anthony Stewart Head, of Buffy fame, talks about joining the Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters film and taking up the mantle of Chiron from Pierce Brosnan.
In an interview with Movies.ie, Head talks about not feeling anxious taking over from Pierce Brosnan. He also explains that they worked harder on making Chiron a more convincing centaur.
“I wanted to work on my movements and what you see of me, as opposed to what is painted in, being as convincing as I could,” he says. “In the first film, for a large part, they strapped [Brosnan] onto the front of a beach buggy and drove him around at high speeds.”
But Sea of Monsters took a different approach. “They got the proportions right and my stilts were bigger than his, and I got used to working on them quite quickly,” Head explains.
Head also worked hard on making the physicality of the character more impressive and more realistic (or as realistic as a portrayal of a centaur can be).
“I worked with an old friend, a guy called Peter Elliot, who was the creature advisor on numerous movies,” Head says. “We worked out some interesting stuff, principally about when we walk, we put our heel down first and the horse puts the front of it’s hoof first and that changes the gait, that changes the way it translates up to the torso.”
“I also worked out that if I could be tethered around the waist, I could lean forward on the stilts, so it broke up the normal conception of a man on top of stilts, a perpendicular picture” Head continues.
It looks like Head took a lot of time to understand his character. He put the time and effort in to improve what Chiron looks like in the film, and it’s obvious that Head is proud of his work.
