Last night Hypable attended the ‘Orphan Black’ SDCC fan panel, and we learned so much about the cast, crew, not to mention the release date for season 2! Check out our list of the most interesting moments of the panel!
While show runners Graeme Manson and John Fawcett revealed that season two will premiere on April 2014, they and the rest of the cast divulged more than just that. Here’s a recap of the best things that happened at the panel last night:
Discussion on the Supreme Court vote on human DNA
Recently the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on the patenting of human DNA, stating that it would now be illegal to patent it. However, the ruling also goes to say that synthetic DNA will be approved.
Fans will know that Orphan Black is literally all about the patenting and cloning of human DNA, both synthetic and natural. So when asked about how this decision will affect the show show runners Manson and Fawcett stated that while they’re still in the middle of writing season 2, this decision may very well end up making it in show canon as well.
Scene of Alison torturing Donnie with a glue gun
After playing the scene with Alison and the glue gun, the panelist asked Maslany how she gets into character for each of the clones, pointing out how different Alison is from any of the other characters she plays.
Maslany states that she has a music playlist for all of the characters that she listens to before she films, and shared what a couple of them are. For Alison she listens to mostly show tunes, Cosima listens to retro/indie and underground music, Sarah is, of course, rock and classic rock, while Rachel is a 90s slow jamz girl, with the z.
Jordan sings
There’s some banter on stage and Jordan admits he had to sing at the last panel. Which prompted the crowd to demand an encore, in which he decided to sing Taylor Swift’s ‘Sparks Fly’. He then proceeded to get red as a tomato!
Jordan talks art.
When he found out that Felix was an artist, Jordan was imagining something urban like Banksy, but was surprised when the show’s art director told him everything would basically be penises. Lots, and lots of penises.
The cast divulges when they realized the show was getting huge.
For the show runners, they knew the show was picking up once Maslany won the award for best leading actress in a drama series for the Critic’s Choice Awards.
However, for Maslany it was when she went on Tumblr to check out what the fans were doing and seeing how passionate everyone was about it. She’s read plenty of essays and seen the fan art and that’s when it hit her that things were getting big. The show runners also mentioned that they love going through the Orphan Black tag on Tumblr.
For Dylan, it was when he googled ‘Paul’s rear end’ and was satisfied with the fact that there were tons of results of his own butt. He called his mother and said “Mom, I made it!”
Cosima’s fate = ?
Manson and Fawcett share that they’re in the middle of writing season two, and tell us that with Cosima’s illness her fate is still up in the air. The duo has yet to decide if Cosima will survive through-out season two and the crowd gets really sad!
A Felix montage!
The video editors of the show compiled a montage of Felix’s best lines, which you can now watch online:
Beth’s backstory is a possiblity.
A fan asked Maslany if they would be able to see Beth’s back story at any point in the show, and she said “Oh I don’t know that would be awesome!” She then turned to the show runners to see what they had to say, and they’re absolutely interested in exploring what made Beth commit suicide on a deeper level but they don’t know when.
