Scholastic unveiled Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’s new cover at San Diego Comic-Con Thursday night, and Hypable was there to cover the reveal.

New Harry Potter cover illustrator Kazu Kibuishi was on hand at the Scholastic party to share Half-Blood Prince’s new design. Check out this first look which we snapped at the event:

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was originally published July 16, 2005.

Each of the new Harry Potter covers has been unveiled one by one as we approach their late August release in the United States. The new covers were designed to reach out to a new generation of readers who haven’t discovered the magic of J.K. Rowling’s series. They are timed with the 15th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s original publication in the United States.

The Harry Potter hardbacks will retain their original art designed by Mary GrandPre. It is only the paperbacks that are receiving the new covers. They hit bookstores on August 27 – just days before the new term starts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

See the new covers for Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and Order of the Phoenix.

The new cover for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will debut at a birthday party Scholastic is throwing for Harry in New York City on Wednesday, July 31. Hypable will be there to cover the event – and the general public is invited! We hope to see you there.

Ok- THAT looks awesome!!!!!!! Def my favorite so far!!! Ahh!!! : )

    • PabloRuiz7

Also my favorite! But don’t you all think he’s been obviously influenced by the movies?

      • Mirna Juarez

I think it looks like a different POV of the chapter art of “The Cave” chapter. I LOVE IT!

  • Esmeblabbed

Looks GREAT! I’m super excited for Deathly Hallows

  • Matthew Howland

That looks beautiful! I can’t wait until the seventh one comes out! And what a better day to release it than on Harry’s birthday!

  • Emily Bryan

    Love it! Dumbledore looks great!

  • A.P.W.B.Dumbledore

I think overall it is great but is it me or does it look like Harry is wearing a cape instead of a cloak.

    • Plat

Whoa! Dumbledore looks amazing in this. Love it.

  • Laura Jurgensmeyer

I love the colors and the rocks and water and everything.. but I am not a fan of how Dumbledore or Harry look.

I love it, I love everything about the cave fragment

  • Sofia Malik

Harry looks a little too short. Other than that it’s great

    • njandro625

I can’t tell if he’s short or just standing behind Dumbledore.

      • Sofia Malik

I don’t think he’s standing behind him, but your comment made me notice that he’s higher up on the slope than Dumbledore is, so he’s even shorter than I thought!

    • Christina

I think its not that harry is short, just that dumbledore is really tall. in the books he was described as being very tall, the movies didnt really capture that.

  • Ben

    Love the color!!!

  • sara

    i love it!!!!!

  • Maria Wang

    now this cover I like!

  • Ben

What do you think the next cover scene will be?????

  • http://www.twitter.com/matsemann08 Mats L

    Look at that Dumbledore!

  • sigrunbjs

Love it! Although Harry looks like he´s 11, not 16…

    • S.K.Hansen

That was my first thought too! The cover is gorgeous, but Harry looks too young.

  • Simone

Nice but how many different covers do they need?

  • xiku

It looks amazing, but with that water, it kind of looks like it’s snowing below their feet…

    • GOParty

Probably seaspray. I am surprised they are not doing covers for ALL seven books, wouldn’t “Goblet Of Fire” look great with a scene of Harry outflying the dragon? Or perhaps “Order Of The Phoenix” showing a practice session of Dumbledore’s Army? Think about it.

      • M

They are doing all seven books.

        • GOParty

XLNT! Any ideas what the others will look like? “Prisoner Of Azkaban” should display the Knights Bus or Harry facing down a dementor/boggart, while “Chamber Of Secrets” would do well to show the Dueling Club or the meeting with Aragog!

          • Christina

They are all released except the deathly hallows cover. the links are in this article!

          • GOParty

            Thanx, Christina!

  • Corin Boswell

I’m really not a huge fan. They’re cool but not my favorite. This just sort of makes me want to go out and replace my worn out books before the new covers hit the shelves.

  • Gavin Walsh

Thar is Amazing will have to find a way to get them here

  • bowser mn

i think that since the first of these new covers was Hagrid taking Harry down Diagon Alley, maybe the last cover should be Hagrid carrying Harry out of the forest when he’s “dead”. Hope i didn’t spoil anything.

    • Winkyxx

      Just kidding.
I think everyone here knows ;)

    • Hagrid’s Coat

That would be cool, but it would definitely be a spoiler to anyone buying the book who had not yet read it. I don’t think they would do that.

      • bowser mn

but would it really be a spoiler for people who hadn’t read the book yet? I think if anything it would be a double shock when they get to that part and realize what’s happening. It would be like a fake out spoiler. If he actually was dead then it would be the biggest spoiler. But if that cover was your first introduction to reading the last book, you might go into it thinking “Ok, this is going to be the story of how Harry dies.” And then when you get to Kings Cross? “OOooooooh snap! No it aint!!!”

I do agree that they won’t take that route. But the series has so much symmetry to it. Any time they could add more would always make me smile.

  • sarahd15

This is actually one of the first scenes I think about when I think of this book or movie. Great job, love the color scheme!!!

  • Winkyxx

I can’t be the only one who thinks that all of the new covers look really similar to movie posters.. At least with GrandPre, they were original because the movies had not come out yet!

  • Roxanne

I like it! Except that Harry’s Cloak looks a little weird.

  • Ross

I like this but I don’t like Harry’s Invisibility… Cape? It looks like a shot straight from the movie!

  • Ben

What do you think the next cover moment will be?????

  • Luke

    I still hate that font…

  • Grace Chen

It’s so cute, I really love it!
