Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix's new cover

The new Harry Potter covers have been unveiled one by one over the past few weeks. On Saturday we saw Goblet of Fire’s cover. On Thursday Prisoner of Azkaban’s was released. Chamber of Secrets’ and Sorcerer Stone’s debuted earlier this year.

Each of the covers were designed by Kazu Kibuishi and will hit book store shelves on August 27. Only the paperback versions will be modified. Mary GrandPre’s artwork will remain on the hardbacks.

We are still waiting for Half-Blood Prince’s and Deathly Hallows‘ covers. In addition, Scholastic will release new art on the box set’s container.

The new covers are timed to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (first published in September 1998).

Scholastic says there are more than 150 million Harry Potter books in print in the United States alone, and the series still hits bestseller lists regularly. The seven Harry Potter books are published in over 200 territories in 74 languages and have sold more than 450 million copies worldwide.

Not a fan… Harry’s wand looks like twig, and last time I checked, they flew over London… Not China.

    • Gabby

      1. All wands look like twigs as they are wood based.
      2. That’s Hogwarts.

      • Gavin Walsh

        best comment ever XD

      • Winkyxx

But the architecture for Hogwarts is not really Hogwarts-esque is it not?
At least, it doesn’t look like it in my opinion.

        • Plat

Hogwarts is whatever the reader pictures in their imagination. Who is to confirm what Hogwarts really looks like?

          • Winkyxx

            JK Rowling?

          • Plat

She hasn’t confirmed anything. She has left most of the stuff up to our imagination, as all authors do.

          • Winkyxx

Well I think most of us have visioned something that was related to what the films created.. at least I had.

          • Plat

That’s only because we got that image for 10 years of films. But in reality that was the art department’s imagination.

      • Pete

Okay, to be fair- let me rephrase what I said before.

1.) Harry’s wand doesn’t look very “wand-esque”, because OBVIOUSLY all wands are twigs/wood based, duh. Basically, it looks too knotty.

2.) Also, architecturally speaking- it still looks like China. Not Hogwarts.

        • Liderc

Architecturally it looks like lots of different cultures. I see a very Scottish looking castle tower behind what you’re calling “China.” It’s one sloped roof, they aren’t only found in Chinese architecture.

    Harry’s EYES though. O.O

    • lorepottter

      He needs glasses anti reflective

    • David Beaton

The sun’s behind him, so not sure why his glasses are opaque. Maybe the problem will go after dark. But then Harry will be all like, where did the sun go?

      • lorepottter

      • Zeo

Probably the sun reflecting off the water below him.

      • RabbitRabbit

        H.A.D. :)

  • Chris

Yeah I kinda agree. I do think they are beautiful covers, but they seem too anime or more geared towards a younger audience. I wish they would have had Mary GrandPre just illustrate new scenes for the new covers! … Ah well. It’s still fun to keep waiting for something new w/ the series, even if it is anime-ish covers :) Cheers!

    • Nathan

It would have been really cool if she did come back and illustrated different scenes! It would be a treat for us (the original potter generation) and the new potter generation.

  • HarryHungerAvatar12

Nice! One of my favorite scenes in the book!

  • lorepottter

I can see the thestrals, that means i have seen death

    • Guest

Haha, that’s exactly what I said! LOL!!

    • rdh014

I accidentally ran over a squirrel the other day…
      does that count?

  • katalizt

    But there’s three thestrals missing….

  • Zack

Why are they flying over China??
I know its Hogwarts but it seriously looks like China.

  • Helen

I was a little wary about the new covers when I saw the first one, but they’re starting to grow on me with each new release. This might be my favorite cover in this rendition so far. Then again, now that I think about it, the colors lend themselves well to Mary GrandPre’s original US cover. So maybe thats why I’m so fond of this one.

  • antonia31

I like these new covers, but they do seem a little more spoiler-y than the old ones. But maybe that’s just in hindsight.

  • LooKat

    Beautiful and Scary.

  • http://xyue-mayx.deviantart.com/ Dreamer

It’s cool, but I really loved GrandPre’s cover!

  • Winkyxx

The originals are still my favorite.

  • NIkki

I was unaware that Harry Potter flew over China.

  • April Demsko

    Definitely my favorite.

  • Nick

I like how the movie Hogwarts has its influence on the Hogwarts of this cover.

  • Hagrid’s Coat

Any guesses on what the scenes for HBP and DH are going to be? I REALLY want DH to be Harry following the doe patronus in the forest, although I don’t really think that will be it. And I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say that HBP is going to be Harry and Dumbledore in the boat?

  • Jake

Hmmm. I think I like it, but I suppose I was expecting something else to use on the cover. I think everyone crowded around the door into The Department of Mysteries would have been good. These colors…eh. It’s not as bright as the other ones are. I like it though, especially when you line them up side-by-side, and I will definitely be buying the box set!

  • christina

Its cool how its blue-toned just like the original

  • Liderc

Why are people saying it looks like China? lol I assume it’s the slightly sloped roof at the bottom right, but it’s a Harry Potter book. If it’s a castle, it’s obviously Hogwarts.

  • Alicia

What is Elijah Wood from Sin City doing on that Thestral? (Just kidding, it’s a lovely cover).

  • Zeo

Guesses on who the two flying behind Harry are? Is that Hermione in the front or Ginny?

    • HarryHungerAvatar12

Personally i think its Hermione and then Ron at the top. THE GOLDEN TRIO is the main character’s in the series so they are probably in the covers.

  • Jefferson Alves

This Hogwarts looks more like a Buddhist temple.

  • Esmeblabbed

Looks pretty good but Prisoner of Azkaban’s cover is still my favourite.

  • somegirl91

I wasn’t a fan of the other new covers, but I absolutely love this one!

  • Michael Vartanian

I hate the way Hogwarts looks!

  • Ultron

Why are people hating on this guys rendition of hogwarts? Sure, we are all used to the movie version, but does anyone remember Grandpre’s first hogwarts??? This is waaaay better

  • Cguy

It was published before that in England, in 1997 I think. Cover looks good, btw!

  • Zack

I think that the cover for DH will be either:
    1. Hagrid carrying Harry
    2. The trio on the dragon

  • Delena

These are all very film based.

  • Ross

Hogwarts looks like a Chinese Temple kinda thing. Not cool.

  • verity

I love the first three covers, especially Prisoner of Azkaban. I am not a fan of this one or Goblet of Fire though. I have to agree with those saying the castle has a Chinese look.

  • mariel

i just honestly don’t understand why the publishing went with this artist. His or her work is, in my opinion, generic and seems a little lazy. I personally know 4 people who could have done this exact piece. If you’re going to use digital, it at least shouldn’t look like you did.

  • GOParty

Dumbledore’s Army riding into battle, I love it!
Next stop, the Department of Mysteries.
    Hang on, Padfoot, WE’RE COMING!
