Julianne Moore, best known over the past couple years for her role as Sarah Palin in HBO’s Game Change, is in consideration for the role of President Coin in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

According to Deadline, who broke the news, the move to secure Moore is likely to happen quickly.

We’ve heard casting rumors concerning Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 over the past several months, but this is the strongest and most reliable murmur yet. In addition, it’s the first time we’re hearing about a particular actress for the role of Coin.

President Coin is introduced in Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games trilogy during Mockingjay when we learn that she was the president of District 13 and leads the rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and Coin meet in District 13.

It’s worth noting that Moore starred opposite Woody Harrelson in Game Change. The latter actor stars as Haymitch in The Hunger Games movie trilogy.

Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series earlier this year thanks to her role as Sarah Palin in Game Change. Moviegoers also know her for her role in 2010s The Kids Are All Right.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is set to be released November 21, 2014. Part 2 opens in theaters November 20, 2015. Both films will be directed by Francis Lawrence who is helming Catching Fire (due out November 22 of this year).

Yesterday we learned that the second trailer for Catching Fire will debut at San Diego Comic-Con in July. Stars of the film will be there to present the new trailer in front of dedicate fans. Hypable will be there to cover any and all developments concerning Catching Fire, and we’ll be sure to share the trailer as soon as it hits the internet.

Julianne Moore: A strong choice for Coin?

A tweet from one of THR’s writers this morning indicated that Jodie Foster was previously approached for the part.

Thanks, Deadline.

I haven’t been paying much attention to HG news lately, but this is very pleasant news! I think she’ll do a wonderful job.

  • upper_westsider

LOVE this choice! I think HG has made really great casting choices!

  • Cora

While I’d still love to see Kathy Bates for the part, Julianne Moore would be a great choice too!

    • Richard Bailey

I was hoping for Kathy Bates too!

  • Septima

Hm. I think this could actually work pretty well. Most people want a super-villainous Coin but she should just come off as a sophisticated leader and organizer. With straight white hair I think Moore could really pull this off :)

  • Jill

I can totally see her as President Coin. I liked her character.

  • theaterboy1

    I would love this!!!

  • Caroline J.

    just, yes.

  • Glaciusx

    lol, that sounded odd.

  • Samma

    (nod of silent approval)

  • Morgan

I still Think Meryl Streep would be great, but this is a good choice too.

    • Me

      Meryl would be fantastic.

    • arthur

Meryl could replace JLaw as Katniss and she still would be great at it haha

  • Sophiesquirels

When reading mockingjay i always thougt of Coin looking like Angela Merkel (the German President)

I can totally see it. :)

  • Daniel Stuart

She would be great at showing the confident, collected Coin (points for alliteration?) she shows the world and be great at showing the more ruthless side of Coin the audience will see. Moore will be able to give the audience what it needs to still be behind Katniss when she SPOILERS does what she does to Coin in the end.

  • Riana-Tiana Menezes

My picks for Coin are Meryl Steep, Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, Julianne Moore and Kathy Bates. So I would be ecstatic if any of them got the part. :)

That’s basically the perfect list of possibilities!

    • Mrs_Badcrumble

Yeah, if any of those names ends up being Coin, I would be very happy!

  • daisyduck

Fantastic choice. I think she would do an amazing job. Hope it works out!

Uff, I rather it be Julianne Moore than Jodie Foster, but seriously, The Hunger Games keeps hitting it out of the park with their casting choices. I hope it happens! I want it to happen now! Please, make it happen.

  • Gary65

Never even considered her, what with being so focused on Meryl Streep but, now that I think on it, she would be brilliant. TBH I don’t care who they get, as long as it isn’t Sigourney Weaver.

    • Tygridia

I also pictured her as Meryl Streep (President Coin kind of reminds me of Miranda Prestley from Devil wears Prada)

  • Hannah Howden

Oooooooo! She LOOKS like President Coin!!

  • Lauren Chapin

I always pictured Jessica Walters (Lucille from Arrested Development) as Coin. But as the part is for a woman in her 50s my next choice was Jodie Foster, but I think Julianne Moore would be fantastic too!

  • Alex

Looks wise I always imagined someone like Judi Dench or Cate Blanche but… acting wise Moore definitely has what it takes.

    time will tell as Coin

  • Teranel

When reading the book, I always pictured Imelda Staunton because Coin reminded me of Umbridge, but I feel like that would be typecasting a bit too much. I think that Moore definitely looks like she could be Coin though.

  • Michael

This is an interesting choice. I never even considered her for the role. But now that I think about it, I feel like she would be really great as president coin! I can already see her as Coin (especially with the picture for this article)

  • Janine McCormick

Julianne would play this role extremely well. The Hunger Games movie has fantastic actors/actresses and Julianne would be a great addition.

  • charbison

Does anyone else think that Wendie Malick would be the perfect Coin?

  • Amanda Douglas

This is a fantastic choice! She actually looks exactly like I pictured her in my head.

  • GoodFinder

YES. If they cover up her freckles, she’d be perfect.

  • http://kiradineen.com/ Kira Dineen

Josh Hutcherson was also in The Kids Are Alright with Julianne Moore. He played her son, Laser.

  • Bee Veranga

She’s probably the third option for me. Whenever I read MJ, I keep imagining Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett as Coin.
