Fans of Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will be happy to find out that the movie now has an official release date and director!

According to THR, the New York Times bestselling novel is slated to be released as a film on July 31, 2015. The script will be penned by X-Men: First Class writer Jane Goldman, and the film will be directed by the infamous Tim Burton.

Ransom Riggs has already completed the sequel to the novel, titled Hollow City, and set it for a January 2014 release date, but movie rights have not yet been purchased as far as we know.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children follows a teenage boy as he discovers an abandoned children’s home on a Welsh island and finds more than a few secrets hidden within its walls.

The novel is told with the help of actual historical photographs collected by Riggs, depicting the characters that the main character meets along the way.

Read the synopsis from the author’s website below.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here—one of whom was his own grandfather—were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive

Quirk Books, the publisher of Miss Peregreine’s, created a book trailer for the novel back in 2011. Although this is not the theatrical trailer, it gives us fantastic insight into exactly how creepy this movie could be.

Although we’re positive that Tim Burton will add an even creepier tone to the film! Fans will either love or hate his adaptation, and we’re excited to see which direction he decides to take it.

Are you excited or scared of Tim Burton’s involvement?

  • Katiedora

I’m conflicted. I hope they keep the creepy aspect in the movie, and I think Tim Burton knows how to do that, but…I feel like it’s going to look like every other Tim Burton movie. And so help me, I love her, but if Helena Bonham Carter is in this, I might throw something.

    • http://tyrionical.tumblr.com/ Kyle

That’s exactly how I feel! I don’t want it to look like every other Burton movie. :/

Also I keep imagining HBC as Miss Peregrine and it just hurts my souls every time.

    • Lupita

I feel like that too! I’m willing to bet that HBC & Johnny Depp will be in this movie.

      • katielynn

I’m willing to bet that if they try to put Johnny Depp in this move, they will try to make him Jacob… I really hope not tho although I love Johnny Depp…

        • Aven

Nah, If JD was in this, He would probably be the father or the therapist. they wouldnt dare make him jacob.

      • Carrie Elizabeth Nocera

When i first heard that Tim Burton was going to direct i took out my Tim Burton movie bingo and jokingly started guess who would be cast as the different characters. I had a few possible cast Johnny Depp would be the whit (spoiler: He would be playing multiple characters which is right up his alley… the whit turned out to be all this different people from Jacob’s life), Helena Bonham Carter would be Miss Peregrine (i think she could pull it off, I can see her smoking a pipe as well.lol), Christopher Lee would be the grandfather (i really kind of hope for this one because i love him and he is a badass!). when i start to lose my faith in the newer Tim Burton i remind myself “he did make Edward Scissor Hands and Big Fish”. After thinking about it too they are all talented actors and if they stuck to the core of the plot (yes changes must be made but when you change the major plot points its kind of like why bother?) It could be a really good movie. I still cringe at Dark Shadows as someone who actually watched the original movie and soap opera (it was on netflix).

    • Luna

she could be Miss. Peregrine..that would be so freaking awesome! :D

    • Christina

      She would be miss perigrine

    • Erika

she fits the gothic style. I can see her as ms. persgrine to a T. she is one of my favorite actresses. i would prefer her over meryl streep. the only other actress who can pull it off is the one who played in those nanny movies? cant think of the two movies. the actress used to be married to kenneth braunaugh.

      • Erika

she played Nanny Mcfee. thats the name. she would be perfect. I think Maggie Smith could play Ms.Avocet. she was described much older then Ms. Peregrine.

  • Ali

I actually hope this has Burton’s signature style. I wasn’t a huge fan of the book because I feel like we were promised creepiness but the book really didn’t deliver (except the romance aspect- that was a bit creepy for me).

  • Rachel Whelen

So I’m pretty stoked for this! :D

  • Zack

I loved the book…until the end. It was such a confusing ending and I had a hard time following it. Anyone else feel the same?

    • boelie

there is going to be a next book

      • Charisma Faye Sato

the hollow city, i have read it, I really love it, cant wait for the next book.

  • Jesse

I’m completely excited for this! I feel like this story is perfect for Tim Burton’s style. As long as it isn’t rated PG, I’ll be happy. I want Tim Burton to go whole hog into the creepiness.

  • Junkyjones6

YES! Tim Burton is my all-time favorite director! I am about 100 pages into the book now and love it!

  • J.B.

NOOOOOO JD and HBC are NOT meant for this!

  • Emily Bryan

I’ve never read the book, actually the title doesn’t even sound familiar to me. I read a few comments and the description, so it sounds like it’s supposed to be spooky and such. I adore Tim Burton, but I do agree that most (if not all) of his movies are the same in some fashion. I also agree with the comments on HBC/Depp. It’s like “He’s your BFF, she’s your wife, WE GET IT.” :/

  • Jonathan kunitsky

Yes!! This is going to be great. I loved the book and I think Tim Burton will do an excellent job.

  • morsmordre79

“According to THR, the New York Times bestselling novel is slated to be released July 31, 2015″ – I think this is supposed to say the film based on the novel?

  • chelle

Hey, does anyone remember Sweeney Todd? It was directed by Tim Burton & had both Johnny and Helena & it was creepy & disturbing…& kinda gorey. I thought it was a good movie. It definitely was NOT PG

  • Kassandra Isaac

I just read the book and it was so amazing and I know a lot of kids my age wouln’t understand it if they don’t have a lot of background about time and birds and such. I did a little research and found out they were going to make a movie out of it. I was excited for a moment not until I saw the non-theatrical trailer and it wasn’t good at all. It looked like the telly shows I see on Nick and is not suitable for such a really great book as this. I’m a big fan of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter but I just don’t think the movie would be that great if it would just turn out into the same Tim Burton films. It would ruin the value. Creepy, strange, unusual and somewhat horror which obviously makes us turn to burton. but i just cannot accept it. It’s too great

  • Pixie Neverland

I don’t really know how to feel about Burton directing this, I think he’s getting worse and worse, his newer movies are not as great as the ones he used to do at the beginning of his career… So, i really really hope he doesn’t ruin this, and I really really hope Depp and Carter are not in this

  • Robin

I am very excited for this too! I am almost done the book and I love it!

  • ella132

i am so excited for this i want to cry

  • Bebas

Please..please…I’m from Indonesia. I like Tim Burton’s creepy movie sets…but if Johnny Depp and Helena BC in this movie, it will destroy the soul of the movie. They both tend to exaggerate scenes, and instead of creepiness, they made it comical…it’s not great anymore…. So again, if they’re in…i’ll wait for the pirated DVD instead of watching this movie first day in the cinema.

  • Megan Fultz

I’m really excited about this movie coming out, the book is amazing. However, a lot of people are worried about the PG aspect of the book, since it is after all for children, but people seem to forget that this book is currently being challenged for the ‘creepiness’ and the hints of supernatural abilities. I do believe that this will be a good movie, and I suggest some parents do accompany their children to watch it, but I do not think that it will scar your children, there are far worse things out there for them to see.

  • Sam

the only characters i’d be ok with Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp playing in the movie would be Jacob’s mom and dad… the more i think about it the more ok i am with it. as long as Helena isn’t Miss Peregrine.

    • Dani

      TOTALLY AGREE

  • Taylor

I know Burton directs creepy films, but he always makes them too weird. If Depp or Carter are in it, I’m not watching the movie. I have no confidence that this movie will be as good as the book.

  • Wronski

I really hope they cast Maggie Smith as Miss Peregrine for the film adaption! My friend and I love the book and couldn’t imagine anyone better to play the part

  • rosie

i wonder who will play Ms. Peregrine *wink*

  • dissapointed

As much as the book was awesome. I know Tim Burton is going to destroy it and all the characters trademarks and turn it into one of his trademark paranormal comedies

  • JOOOO

Im so excited I peed myself

  • odessa

OMFG I LOVE THIS BOOK AND I WILL KILL TO SEE THE MOVIE i dont find it creepy it kinda reminds me of my dreams and stuff i draw… but i honestly want to see this so bad
but if the characters suck i probs will only see it once…

  • Yakob

this would be better directed by guillermo del toro IMO

    • ladypamela

He would be the perfect director… he knows how to do creepy and realistic perfectly well

  • Lexiwho?

I am glad that Tim Burton will direct this, He is really good at getting the dark aspect to it, I just hope he wont make it a clay mation, like in the corpse bride and nightmare before christmas, I think it would just take away from the feeling you got reading the book.

  • McKenzie McGehee

I believe that Tim Burton could do some wonderful things with this book. I can see the wonderful parts being filmed a lot like Big Fish and he certainly has a great way of showing the peculiar. I feel as many others though, that I will be crushed to see HBC in this movie. It’s not that she is a bad actress, but she doesn’t fit. She’s not Miss Peregrine. If you must put her somewhere, let her be Jacob’s mom or Miss Ascot.

  • Nyx

HBC is a goddess, I don’t care what anyone says. However, I don’t think he’s going to cast her as Miss Peregrine though. I think he’ll cast someone who fits the part better. I don’t think he’ll cast Johnny Depp either. Not every Tim Burton movie has them, you know.

  • Alison

I am really excited for the movie. It’s one of my all time favorite books and I really hope Johnny Depp is in it because he’s one of my favorite actors. I can’t wait to see my favorite book be turned into a movie and hopefully Tim Burton won’t screw it up like some books that became movies.

  • Samidodo

    The Second book is amazing

  • Charisma Faye Sato

as i was reading the book, i keep imagining Emma watson as Emma :) and Josh Hutcherson as Jacob.

  • bookworm

I probably think it would be best for Tim Burton to do his thing especially for dark themed cinematographies. But I think if he’d put Johnny Depp in the cast, It would be really cool if he’ll play the antagonist (Golan) of the story. Knowing Johnny Depp from his impersonations he would really carry the role.

  • Sam

It’s probably going to be animated. There are only so many things you can do with special effects. I think animation would be the best medium and I would enjoy that. I really love Tim Burton movies and I’m very excited that he’s directing it

  • Elle

If Tim Burton does the same old thing as he always does and makes this movie the exact same as all of his others … I am going to be SO disappointed. The books were INCREDIBLE and deserves it’s own unique and equally creepy film. Pleaaaaaseeeeee

  • Hi

I dont want it to be really creepy though because i love the book how it is and i love the cartecters and if any of them change in this movie i will be soooo sad!
