Mario Kart 8 will introduce a new type of vehicle to the Mario racing game: the hovercraft.
Today’s Nintendo Direct yielded a brand new trailer for the upcoming Wii U iteration the fast paced racer, Mario Kart 8.
The hovercrafts used in the game seem to have some sort of transformation from kart to hovercraft, as can be seen in the trailer below.
The trailer also confirms that fan favorite characters will be making a return in Mario Kart 8, including Mario, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Wario, and Toad.
The hovercraft karts were accompanied by another type of space-age technology in the Mario Kart 8 trailer: alternate gravity planes. There will be certain areas of tracks that will allow vehicles to travel up walls sideways, and sometimes even upside down.
Mario Kart 8 marks the first Mario karting adventure for the Wii U. The game will come out in Spring 2014, exclusively for the Wii U.
The last game to come out in the Mario Kart series was Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS. That game introduced the mechanic of players being able to hang glide off of large jumps. This feature will make a return in Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U.
Another feature present in a previous version of Mario Kart that’s making a return is the motorcycle vehicles. When riding on motorcycles, players are able to zip past opponents at high speeds that are impossible to reach with just a regular kart. The catch, however, is that these motorcycles are much more difficult to control the steering of.
