Matthew Weiner is reiterating that Mad Men season 7 will be the final batch of episodes for his long-running advertising period drama.
Speaking last night at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to promote his show for potential Emmy nominations, Weiner (surrounded by cast members such as Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, and Jessica Pare) said there were “no plans right now” for Mad Men season 8.
Weiner also discussed the temptations he had during writing season 6 to save some plot points for next season, thus leaving things open ended. “The truth is that I honestly feel that I kind of wanted to hold stuff off for the end. And they were like, no, you cannot do this. You can’t change the way you’ve done the show in the past. So when you see the finale of this season, like the finale of every season, it could easily be the end of the show.”

We’re glad Weiner has an exit plan for the show. In many cases, dramas need to be working towards a certain ending so their plot lines don’t lose their speed or intrigue. While the creator has said that he’s known how the show will end since season 3, we can’t help but feel that the past couple of seasons have been somewhat subpar for the show which was once dominating the hearts of critics everywhere. Weiner says he plans to begin writing Mad Men season 7 beginning in mid-July, and the cast will begin shooting this October.
Many shows are beginning their campaign to convince Emmy voters that their stories should be nominated. Posters around Hollywood in recent weeks have been asking voters to consider a variety of shows. HBO and Netflix have had the strongest billboard campaigns so far, but AMC will surely be getting their ads up soon.
