Rory Kinnear is being touted as the next Doctor on Doctor Who by a U.K. paper who claims to have a source.
Today The Telegraph is claiming that Rory Kinnear, who played Tanner in Skyfall, has been offered the role and is currently mulling it over. The Telegraph has been accurate before with rumors via their “source” called Mandrake. In fairness, it should be noted, they have also gotten some details wrong. It is unknown if they are the publication to which Starburst was referring.
Kinnear is 35, which is roughly the age that David Tennant was when he took that role. Kinnear, unlike Tennant, does appear a bit older than his chronological age. He would certainly please those clambering for an “older Doctor.” He has had a varied career ranging from Shakespearean theatre, to costume drama, to James Bond.
Last week, in what amounted to a spectacular game of he-said and she-said, the sci-fi magazine Starburst claimed that a U.K. tabloid would be releasing the name of the next Doctor today. They furthermore claimed that the BBC was to have announced the name Saturday so as to stop said tabloid from stealing their thunder. The three names that Starburst claimed were the front-runners were Domhnall Gleeson, Daniel Kaluuya, and Dominic Cooper.
Starbust’s claims resulted in denial on the official Doctor Who Twitter, and mocking from at least one source connected to the Doctor Who production team. Ed Stradling characterized Starburst as, “getting a bit over-excited!”
At this point, neither Kinnear nor the BBC have commented further. His name surfaced early last week when the Mirror touted him as a front-runner.
