Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be directed by the directors of the Oscar-nominated film Kon-Tiki, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
Disney has been searching for a director for Pirates of the Caribbean for some time, and they’ve now found their man, or men as it were. The Norwegian team of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will direct Pirates 5. They are most known for their directing of Kon-Tiki, a movie receiving a nomination for best foreign film this past year at the Oscars. Disney, Johnny Depp, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer all had to okay the decision, and they did.
Why these directors? Outside of Kon-Tiki, they don’t have a lot of experience. They’ve only directed two other feature length, theatrically released movies – Max Manus: Man of War and Bandidas. Both films did fairly well critically. Kon-Tiki really did put them on the map, and especially for a film like Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Kon-Tiki, the story of an explorer on a raft, showed that they can make a great movie on the water, and it’s what ultimately landed them this job. A job like this is obviously huge for them. If all goes well with Pirates 5, they should look to continue getting big jobs like this.
What else do we know about ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’?
Right now, we really don’t know that much. Disney announced that Pirates 5 would be released on July 10, 2015, so the lack of information know past that isn’t too surprising. Pirates 5 will of course star Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. No other cast members have been announced. The script has been completed, maybe. The initial script was finished before Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hit theaters in May of 2011, but it has since been rewritten. Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) was hired to rewrite the script.
Thanks, Deadline.
