In Game of Thrones season 4, we’ll meet some new key players from the A Song of Ice and Fire saga. Find out which characters George R.R. Martin has confirmed!
The author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin, recently attended a fan convention in Kansas City and participated in a Q&A, where he discussed both his books and the HBO series Game of Thrones.
Speaking about the upcoming fourth season (which roughly spans the second half of the third book, A Storm of Swords), Martin confirmed that several key characters are being cast.
Tower of the Hand has a recap of the event, which reveals that auditions are currently being held for Mace Tyrell, Styr (the Magnar of Thenn), and perhaps most excitingly, Oberyn Martell.
While we strive to always be spoiler free when covering Game of Thrones on Hypable, here are brief (read: vague) descriptions of the three characters:
Mace Tyrell is Margaery’s father, and the son of Lady Olenna, the Queen of Thorns. As Olenna has indicated, he is not the brightest or most tactical man, but has so far done well in trying to secure his daughter the position of Queen of Westeros (first by marrying her off to Renly, and currently by setting up her marriage to Joffrey). He first appeared in the second novel, A Clash of Kings.
The Magnar is a Wildling leader, and in A Storm of Swords, Mance Rayder sent him and his men ahead to scale the Wall – but this has obviously been changed for the TV series. While it is likely that they have merged his role with Tormund Giantsbane’s in the show, we expect him to show up in season 4 as Jon’s storyline unfolds.
Oberyn Martell, or the Red Viper, is a Prince of Dorne. He is the younger brother of the ruling prince, Doran Martell, and their sister was Elia, the wife of Daenerys’ brother Rhaegar Targaryen (crown prince, not crazy). Oberyn has eight bastard daughters known as the Sand Snakes.
Further, the word on Winter is Coming is that they are also casting Ellaria Sand, Oberyn’s paramour, although nothing has been confirmed.
This is very exciting news! It indicates that the show is setting up for some big events in season 4, and reminds us that even though season 3 is hailed as the biggest season ever, we still have a lot to look forward to.
Game of Thrones season 3, episode 9 “The Rains of Castamere” airs Sunday, June 2 at 9/8c on HBO.
