It’s cool to be a Game of Thrones fan. In a new interview, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard talks about her love for the series, and reveals her allegiance to House Targaryen.
In a video interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, the Australian PM confesses to being a huge fan of the series.
“I’m a bit of an addict,” Gillard admits. “I like it because the intrigue between the contending families is enough to sustain the storyline.”
Gillard also reveals her favourite character: the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen. She hopes that by the end of the series, Dany will be sitting on the Iron Throne.
The PM goes on to talk about the shock she felt when Ned Stark was killed off in season 1. “He sort of had hero written all over him,” she said, so she assumed he’d continue to be the main character.
When asked whether she’d consider herself the Khaleesi of the office, she says, “well, I don’t have any pet dragons… maybe they’d come in handy from time to time, but no one’s given me any dragon eggs.”
We can see why Gillard might be drawn to Daenerys as a strong female character, as she herself is Australia’s first female Prime Minister. And really, what better show is there for a political leader to watch than Game of Thrones?
Hopefully for her opponents, Gillard doesn’t put any of the tactics she has learnt on Game of Thrones to use in the upcoming Australian election, to be held later this year.
Game of Thrones season 3, episode 9 “The Rains of Castamere” returnss this Sunday at 9/8c on HBO.
