In a new interview regarding the next season of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat reveals he’s already planned all of series 8, and how long he sees himself running the show.
When asked if he’s already planned the future for the Doctor, Moffat responds with a resounding yes, stating, “we have to work quite a long way in advance. The next season is plotted out. I always end up complaining about it, but it’s quite fun. I’m just making up nonsensical adventures, what’s wrong with that?”
Doctor Who is known for its episode by episode style of singular adventures and moments of mishap, but we worry when Moffat says nonsensical. Given that Clara’s mystery is yet to be fully revealed, we’re still hoping for some sensical and informative episodes – along with the usual fun that the Doctor is known for, of course. There was a lack of continuity in the series this season, so we hope that Moffat will keep that in mind when executing the next series, even if he’s already planned it.
Moffat is known to be one of the less loved show runners that Doctor Who has had over the years, so we wonder how long he’ll be taking the reign after series eight is done. When asked about how long he’ll be holding those reigns he responded with, “forever. We’re not letting anyone else do it,” hopefully clearly joking.
Moffat continued, “you take it a year at a time, that’s all you can do. It’s such a commitment. It’s nine or ten months a year of work, so I think you can only really do that a year at a time anyway. And if you start thinking of the legacy now… we’ve got a long time to think about that, when people have forgotten us. We just want it to be great. All I ever worry about is the show that is coming out on Saturday.”
Cleverly avoiding the answer, we’re curious about how long Moffat truly intends to be Doctor Who‘s show runner. From the fifth season onwards, the show has had it’s fair share of overly complicated story arcs with timeline jumps forward and hops backward, as well as female characters that seem to be, perhaps, a tad too codependant on the males in the show. We’re eager for a change in direction, and we hope that Moffat doesn’t plan to go on too much longer.
