Avengers 2 director, Joss Whedon, has confirmed that sibling-superheroes Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers sequel and that Iron Man will be returning.
Back in April, Joss Whedon teased that he had “these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act. They’re in the movie.” Marvel president, Kevin Feige, went on to say that it may be difficult to use the characters, as they’re actually mutants, that were fathered by Magneto from X-Men. Of course, X-Men character rights are owned by Fox, but these apparently fell into a “grey area.”
Today, Joss has confirmed that they were able to use the characters in Avengers 2. Whedon confirmed their involvement by telling IGN, “You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”
Quicksilver’s power is “super-speed” and Scarlet Witch can hex people and manipulate reality. It’s interesting that we’re starting to see some more magic involved with the characters in the Marvel universe.
As we head towards the villain which was teased in the first Avengers, Thanos, it doesn’t surprise us that we’ll be seeing more unworldly characters involved with the film. According to Collider, the characters have multiple storylines, so no one is quite sure which story we may see in Avengers 2, but with Joss at the wheel, we imagine it’ll be interesting.
Whedon also discussed Iron Man 3, and how its ending will affect the “availability” of Tony Stark/Iron man in The Avengers 2. He says, “Well, I feel like in Iron Man 3, even though he said, ‘I’ve changed’ — he blew up his remote suits, but I don’t think anybody thinks he doesn’t have one anymore. The question is, if The Avengers are called, does he show up? And the answer is, ‘Yes!’” So we know that Iron Man will be in The Avengers sequel, but will Robert Downey Jr. still be playing Tony Stark when the film hits theaters in 2015?
We’ve reported recently that Robert Downey Jr. has been in negotiations with Marvel, as his contract with them ended after Iron Man 3 wrapped. Downey seems as though he’s in a position where he has to simply make a decision as to whether he should continue being locked into contracts with Marvel, or if he should move on to making some more artistic films, which he feels are better suited to his past and hopefully his future.
Although, we doubt he regrets becoming Iron Man, as it’s netted him a small fortune and completely reinvigorated his entire career, but alas we will most likely see him again as Iron Man when Avengers 2 hits theaters, despite not yet having a new contract, something he says his lawyers and agents are “having a ball with right now.”
