Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in U.S. theaters Thursday, and its positive reviews raise the question: Will there be a Star Trek 3? A 2016 release date may already be in mind to coincide with Star Trek’s 50th anniversary.

star trek 3 small kirk spockInternational moviegoers have already been raving about director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, and with the film hitting U.S. IMAX theaters today, all fans are going to start wondering if there will be a Star Trek 3. The real question is whether director J.J. Abrams will be involved in a third film. He’s taken the jump from Star Trek to taking over as director for the first film in the new Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Episode VII, which is set to hit theaters in 2015.

Disney recently purchased the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas for $4.05 billion, and they quickly hired Abrams to direct their first film, in hopes that he can revitalize the Star Wars franchise like he has for Star Trek. A wise move on Disney’s part, but how does this affect our chances of seeing Star Trek 3?

Not a whole lot. While J.J. Abrams has been crucial to the success of Star Trek and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness is tracking to have a $100+ million opening weekend at the box office. It appears as though moviegoers are already looking for something new to watch, after Iron Man 3 gobbled up its massive box office numbers in its first two weekends, then slowly started to fizzle out.

This puts Star Trek’s sequel in a great position to fill the void. Star Trek Into Darkness has pulled in $31 million at foreign box offices so far, and it looks to make nearly triple that this weekend at the U.S. box office.

With the release of the sequel, it appears as though audiences continue to enjoy the new Star Trek franchise that Abrams has created. While the films are costly to produce, mostly due to the massive amount of VFX shots which are essential to create the universe it takes place in, the actors involved aren’t exactly costly – yet.

What this means is that the studio can keep costs low with Star Trek 3, and possibly even lower if they hire a new director to replace J.J. Abrams – who is probably getting fairly pricey now that he’s Star Wars’ new wonder boy.

Paramount is most likely looking at a summer 2016 release date for Star Trek 3, as it will coincide with the original Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. Star Trek Into Darkness co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof explained to Trek Movie that he doesn’t see J.J. Abrams directing the next Star Trek film without “cloning himself.” J.J. Abrams told Yahoo! Movies that his involvement with Star Trek 3 isn’t on his mind right now, as Star Wars: Episode VII is his next project.

star trek 3 small j jWhen discussing Star Wars recently, Abrams said that he felt like he was being passed the ball for the franchise, we’re curious if he feels the same way about possibly handing off the ball to another director for Star Trek 3.

He says, “I never see myself doing anything more than what’s in front of me. What the approach is going to be remains to be discussed, because it’s in process, so it’s a weird thing to be talking about. If I’m charging down the court dribbling the ball, it’s hard to comment on the layup that’s about to take place. I feel like the ball is just getting passed to me now.”

Co-screenwriter Damon Lindelof did say that there may already be a storyline in mind for the third film which can be seen in Star Trek Into Darkness, saying “You can never see enough Klingons, and I think in this film we’ve given the audience a little taste, but there’s also a promise that there’s a larger conflict on the horizon, and that would be fun to see.”

So it seems there may already be something in the works in terms of a screenplay, and Lindelof seems interested in taking a look at Klingons and the larger conflict which is seen in Star Trek Into Darkness. We have a feeling that we will be seeing Star Trek 3 in the next 2-3 years, but director J.J. Abrams may just have his hands too full with Star Wars to fly this threequel into the timeslot that Paramount is looking for.

Do you think ‘Star Trek 3’ will be made?

I hope there will be! I loved his 2009 film. Only a shame that Into Darkness hits the theaters the 6th of June here. :3

    • Han

      Thats rough Remy!
Man I hope JJ does the third one! Maybe if Star Wars/Trek was filmed at the same studio, JJ could run between the two films and direct them at the same time…Sounds completely logical to me.

      • Ally Carter

        Teehee..Logic..

      • yankee

haha, and if he makes a mistake, we’ll have lightsabers in star trek!

        • Nmae

          and phasers in star wars!

  • http://twitter.com/rmdez Rebekah

Oh come on! Of course it will be made! The real question is will JJ be directing? It would be nice if he could. I say yes! clone him!

    I second the cloning option!!

  • antonia31

I just saw star trek into darkness! my very first star trek movie in theaters! I went decked out in my star trek gear. I wont say what happened, but at one point during the movie, where cumberbatch said his characters name, I gasps really loud. lol everyone laughed. this movie had me forgetting where I was! its that good! the person who plays bones is a ringer for the role! kirk is awesome. and spock, well spock is just so sexy and……logical! the humor was right, the situations were right, and the action is really star trek’y’. I am 28 and I think this new star trek is going to win over my generation. just keep the star trek going. England has bond, we have trek.

    • Cguy

I was actually disappointed at his identity. Everyone was expecting it and I thought they were going to surprise us, but no.

  • DaLegend808

just saw it today and enjoyed it a lot. i will see it again because it’s that good. Abrams is an outstanding director oh and just add Benedict Cumberbatch to my “favorite actors” list.

  • Guest

    I sure hope so <3

  • 7Starrchasers

It needs to be made by J.J…this movie was seriously fantastic, I’d love for him to finish the trilogy!

  • Mikaela

I’ve seen the movie three times already, I think he did an amazing job on the film! Well enough that I went back to watch it 3 times in a row. Knowing that spoke and caption Kurt are sexy! I think they are definitely making another one, but I’m not sure on who is going to direct it. J.J Abrams should try to do both Star Trek and Star Wars. And I hope he does, because he has made the first two star treks well. Live long and prosper!

  • Brony

    Yes no question

They basically flat out told us there is more than 1 sequel

Lets get someone new – there are so many eager young film directors that have so much potential. JJ has Star Wars and I think it’s only fair that we get a fresh face.

  • holcats

I CAN’T WAIT! But it is so far away :(

  • Brooke

The Enterprise is going on a journey for the next 4 or 5 years right?? I hope they run into the Borg in the next film!!

    • Ven9ence

The Borg wouldn’t be in it because they aren’t in the same quadrant at the time. This is the reason yet never appeared in the original series and made their first appearance in the next generation so it would not make sense if they encountered the bit in the next film

      • Nmae

This is an alternate timeline the borg may be in the alpha quadrant in that timeline

        • Nmae

plus the borg have trans-warp technology

  • c_r_gauthier

I wouldn’t mind seeing this as a trilogy.

In this timeline, the Federation is weaker and thus more vulnerable to threats, such as an alliance between Klingons and Romulans. And say this does happen, then it might end up that the only way to save the Federation is to restore the original timeline.

Old Spock knows this and thus recruits the new crew on a covert mission to go back in time and basically save Romulus as Old Spock intended in the first place. This would stop Nero and Old Spock from entering the black hole / rift.

I think that would be cool.

  • Jrog129

Hate to burst bubbles….you young ones obviously haven’t watched the originals and noticed the second movie was pretty much the same concept as Wrath of Kahn. Just switched the two in the end with the radiation exposure. Don’t get me wrong…enjoyed the movie but been there…done that. JJ needs to make up for the second repeat and go back to his creative talent, shown in the first Star Trek, and blow us away with a third movie! No insult intended.

  • Mel

I really hope they make another one i really enjoyed the first 2 would love to see a third with the same actors and actress…. really loving scotty :)

  • manny voyager69@gmail.com

  • Mary

I sure hope so…I just hope I’ll be around to see it..That is a long way off for me..I want it today..lol
