Doctor Who puts a lot of pressure on any actor who participates not to reveal anything. So it seems that John Hurt might not have gotten the “cone of silence” memo. (spoilers)

Poor John Hurt, apparently he forgot that there is this thing known as the Internet, and everything and anything you say, even during the tiniest of gatherings, can get around the globe in a hot five seconds. Hurt was at a gathering in his hometown in support of a local theatre. During the course of the evening he made several remarks about the value of live theatre, acting in general, and then he let this tidbit loose regarding his involvement in the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

“Mr Hurt, who lives near Cromer, earlier told the EDP he had just finished shooting a Dr Who 3D special in which he plays ‘part of the Doctor’ in a ‘kind of trinity’ which includes David Tennant.”

The comments were made to The Eastern Daily Press, which is a very small, local publication. Perhaps Hurt thought he was speaking off the record, perhaps the paper took the commentary out-of-context, or perhaps Hurt thought that no one would hear about his commentary. Regardless, the comments, however they were intended, are now out as public fodder, and neither Hurt nor the BBC is likely to clarify them. Oh to be a fly on the wall at the BBC in Steven Moffat’s office when word of this reached his ears! One can only imagine the email missive and/or phone call that Hurt(pictured below) received.

So, the question now arises: What “part” are we talking about? Perhaps the largest clue is in the costume Hurt was observed wearing (seen above). It’s a leather jacket that is awfully similar to Chris Eccleston’s signature jacket. So is Hurt some version of “the Doctor” from the future/past who likes the ninth Doctor’s taste in fashion?

The other possibility is the, “part of,” is supposed to be meant more figuratively. Is he part of a team of three people that battle the Zygons? Given that recent signage indicated Ian Chesterton’s presence, perhaps he plays Ian. The character would be in his 80s (assuming the Jo Grant description isn’t canon) and with make-up Hurt could certainly pull-off that age range.

What’s your opinion? Is all of this much ado about nothing, or did John Hurt reveal a major plot point?

It’s much ado without nothing. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Moffat told him to plant this seed for the fans to dissect. However, I do look forward to this if it’s true. If the 50th doesn’t wow me, I’ll be dropping the show until the season is finished.

I honestly think that he’s the “lost” Doctor, the Doctor in the time war that killed the time lords, and the Doctor has chosen to forget him. The only thing is that would mean renumbering all of the new series Doctor’s, but I think that would be a great twist in the mythology of the show.

…Which would tie in perfectly with the clock/time references we see in some of Matt’s episodes! “The Eleventh Hour”, “tick tock goes the clock” – if the doctors are renumbered, Matt’s doctor would be 12! Just like the numbers on a clock!

Interesting idea. I wish they had EVERY episode of the original Doctor Who shows. I would spend the next 8 months transfixed on my TV to make sure I was completely caught up. Netflix only has some of the specials from each season.

and tie in the Question maybe The Fall of the 11th ??

I just read an article about this, semi-confirming it. Not sure about the source’s validity, but that would be VERY cool.

His comments seem to suggest something that isn’t as simple as it sounds. Like a lot of people, I immediately thought of the rumours which have been circulating lately. But the comment is vague – we don’t have his precise wording, and the “part of” sounds very suspicious and could mean just about anything, same for the “trinity” aspect.

On the whole, I don’t think there is enough there to make any assumptions yet. Personally, I don’t mind the idea that he was a Time War Doctor (though I hope that means we don’t have to renumber the others), as I always thought Eight had too much gentleness about him in the TV movie to for the war, and “Rose” implied that Nine had regenerated fairly recently (he looks at the mirror at one point and comments on his ears, like they’re different). Another nice possibility is that he is a future Doctor (the past, present and future “trinity”), an impostor or a Dream Lord character. In any case, doesn’t matter, so long as it’s a great story. If anything, I’m very intrigued.

I didn’t want to believe it, but that looks definitely like 9th’s jacket.

My bets on him playing the Valeyard.

  • HDVB

What if he is playing the Ninth Doctor, but somehow aged or altered or something… Just another idea… I just feel like it would feel weird to have this Doctor between 8 and 9, 10, and 11, but not 9… I feel like that would just be weird…

I can’t wait for the 50th Anniversary special. I honestly hope that all of these denials of involvement are just misdirections. I hope this 50th will be everything that we all hope it will be.

Looks like a scrap man to me!
