Shadowhunters can rest easy tonight knowing that The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones‘ sequel City of Ashes has just been green lit by Sony.

The Mortal Instruments producer Martin Moszkowicz took to Twitter to reveal the exciting City of Ashes movie news and confirmed that City of Bones lead stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower will return for the sequel. Director Harald Zwart is set to return too.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opens this August, and fans of the original book by Cassandra Clare have been eagerly awaiting the adaptation.

An action-packed City of Bones international trailer debuted on April 30.

Sony must be happy with how City of Bones turned out considering the sequel is already in development. They must also think there’s enough positive anticipation to warrant a sequel. It looks like they hope to begin shooting the City of Ashes movie later this year.

Coincidentally, another hot young adult book series had its sequel green lit Tuesday evening too: Insurgent, the second book in Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy.

Are you more excited for the City of Bones movie or the City of Ashes movie?

Sweet. AS long as Bones isn’t a flop, there’s no reason to cancel this. Cool that they already have the director and cast confirmed. Much more smoother than me worrying about Catching Fire for months.

I really hope that once the movie comes out in August they green light City of Glass. Can’t wait to see who they cast as Mia.

Love Harald Zwarts returning. I’ve always hated when they change directors.

Yay! Now I just need some new Infernal Devices movie news to top everything off!

  • Tessa

Thank the Lord for this, at least if they go through with the City of Ashes they will probably do the City of Glass as well otherwise anyone who goes to see the City of Bones and hasn’t read the books will come out at the end thinking “what the hell!?” They probably still will anyway but if they make the City of Glass it’ll all make sense. Fingers crossed it does well in August.

Woot! Super psyched that Zwart is returning, he’s brought such a unique vision to the first film so far, it would be a shame to see him leave. I know it’s kind of mute, but I do hope he turns into the “Peter Jackson” of TMI – though it’s a lot to expect a director to commit to 6 films.

I love the book series and I think Cassie Clare is a WONDERFUL storyteller who has created a beautiful and intricate world to play in. However, I’m not going to get excited about this until I see how City of Bones turns out. I’ve gotten my hopes up about movie adaptations only to be let down too many times (Twilight, Hunger Games, Eragon) to have high expectations. Especially when they green light a series before we’ve seen any significant amount of footage from the first movie.

You thought Twilight and the Hunger Games were bad adaptations? Why?

      • PotionWillow207

You thought Twilight was a GOOD adaptation?!? I think you might be the first person I’ve met who thinks that. I have nothing good to say about that movie. Casting was okay for some characters, but terrible for most. Script was atrocious. Editing was choppy. Directing was terrible. I guess the soundtrack was okay, except for the Bella’s Lullaby that wasn’t a lullaby.

Hunger Games was a pretty big let down. Casting was great, but plot was sacrificed for too much shaking camera. And the costume design was a huge let down. Being a beginning costume designer, they could have done so much more. When you have pretty much no restrictions on how couture and how out there you can make the designs, that’s what you give us?

The first rule about the Eragon movie: We don’t talk about the Eragon movie.

  • Jake

You know what this means? Not only will the movie probably be really good, but they’re going for making as many as they can, thus, making them as fast as possible because the potential for so many movies. That’s what I get out of this, anyway.

I am so happy about this! City of Ashes is so great, so much awesome stuff happens in this book! Simon! Malec! Aaah, I can’t wait!

SUPER excited! I just finished this book yesterday and am about to start City of Glass. Can’t wait to see Bones this summer and the ending scenes in Ashes should be epic!

I saw the mortal instruments: city of bones a few days ago and it was definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long while. I’ve read City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass and I’m busy with reading City of Fallen Angels. The books are even better and the movie was so so so so so good. It was definitely worth the waiting. I’m planning to go watch it again tomorrow! I can’t wait to buy it on DVD and I’m so excited to see the mortal instruments: City of Ashes on tge big screen! If u haven’t seen City of Bones yet you should go watch it cause it’s definitely the must see of the year. And don’t forget to read the books
