The paperback edition of The Serpent’s Shadow is out today, containing the short story Son of Sobek, which is a crossover installation featuring both Percy Jackson from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, as well as Carter Kane from the Kane Chronicles series.

The eBook and audiobook, the latter of which is narrated by Riordan, will be released on June 19. The standalone book will contain our first sneak peek at House of Hades, which will be released on October 8.

Additionally, Riordan did a Q&A with USA Today in which he talks about both Son of Sobek and his future series about Norse mythology.

On the Son of Sobek front, Riordan says the idea behind the crossover short story was completely reader driven. It was something his fans had wanted to see, and he decided to take a leap and go for it. It sounds like he’s pretty happy with the outcome!

He also talks about the meaning behind the title. Sobek, in Egyptian mythology, is a crocodile god, and Riordan says we can “expect some major crocodile action” in this installment. We’re also going to see Percy and Carter going to hand to hand at first, as they don’t exactly get off on the right foot.

And if you’re impatiently waiting for the Norse series like we are, well, we’ve got a little ways to go yet. House of Hades is the fourth book in Heroes of Olympus. The fifth book will be the final installment in this series, and will more than likely be released a year later in the fall of 2014.

Only then will we be able to set aside Percy and Jason, and start wondering about who the main characters will be in the Norse series. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I’ve been reading myths. I love Norse mythology — Thor and Odin and Loki — amazing characters,” Riordan says. “It’s just one of those things I haven’t had the chance to go in and write the ideas I have, but finally I am getting the chance, so that’s next on my plate.”
