Today we’re announcing the next BattleShips tournament that will put literature’s most iconic relationships against each other. It’ll be a gory online battle to find out which book or book series has the best relationship ever! Will it be Harry Potter or Twilight? The Fault In Our Stars or Divergent? You decide!
It’s no secret that we at Hypable love books and all they have to offer us: action, drama, mystery, and much more.
One thing that almost every book has in common is romance, and that stirs our little shipper hearts. We wanted to bring you a competition that would not only revive the shipper communities in older fandoms like Harry Potter or Twilight, but also give you a chance to express your love for your newest OTPs from books like Divergent or the Percy Jackson series.
What is this BattleShips thing?
Well, anonymous reader, we’re glad you asked! If you don’t know what BattleShips is, it’s a tournament that rallies the greatest couples from a certain genre (books, movies, etc.) and puts them against each other in an online poll to the metaphorical death. If you’d like to see how these competitions played out in the past you can check out our BattleShips page that contains all our past battles from our BattleShips – Classic TV tournament.
Still confused about BattleShips and this whole shipping thing in general? Take a look at our first ever BattleShips post, which explains the idea of shipping and OTPS and all that other nonsense you’ve already read about so far. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask in the comments below!
How will this BattleShips work?
First come the nominations! In this post, you’ll nominate your favorite book or book series using the comments section below. You can only nominate one book per comment. If you see that one of your fellow readers has already suggested a book you wanted to nominate, use the up vote button on the existing comment. We will use the seven books that receive the most up votes. If you nominate more than one book in your comment, we’ll be confused as to which book or series is actually being up voted.
In addition to the seven visitor-nominated books, we’ve already selected the biggest book fandoms on Hypable to be a part of this tournament. They include:
- Harry Potter
- Twilight
- A Song of Ice and Fire
- Heroes of Olympus
- Divergent
- Hunger Games
- The Fault in Our Stars
- Perks of Being a Wallflower
- Lord of the Rings
- The Mortal Instruments
- The Host
- Romeo & Juliet
- The Great Gatsby
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Pride & Prejudice
- Sookie Stackhouse
- Fifty Shades of Grey
You cannot nominate one of the books or series already mentioned above because they’re already in the tournament.
Once we have completed our list of books, the time for ship choosing is here. Each book will have a poll to determine which relationship deserves to represent it in the book vs book battles.
After ship nominations, the battles finally begin. A seeded bracket style tournament will randomly pair these books up against each other and it’s up to you to decide who wins. Vote for the book or couple you like most, until they get named Best Book Ship of All Time!
But Harry Potter and Twilight are movies…
Incorrect! Although both book series have been turned into major motion pictures the characters started off on paper, and that is what we want to focus on. This particular tournament is about the book characters, not the movie characters. If you hated Edward and rooted for Jacob in the movies, but wanted Edward to win Bella’s heart in the novels, then vote for Edward and Bella!
When you vote, it’s important to take into consideration the authors’ work, not the movie industry’s! Let’s recognize the hard work the authors put into creating and developing these characters and relationships, and try to ignore the theatrics of Hollywood.
Which book or series do you nominate?
Remember, if you see the book you were going to nominate already in the comments below, please up vote it rather than leaving a second comment.
