Will Iron Man 3 be Robert Downey Jr.’s last Iron Man film or will he be involved in Iron Man 4? With Iron Man 3 heading to U.S. theaters this Friday, what fans really want to know is whether Marvel will make Iron Man 4. Check out what we know so far about whether the film will be made and if the actor will even be involved.

iron man 4 small image maskRobert Downey Jr. and crew have been making their rounds these last few weeks, doing press junkets, and each interview gives us a bit more information as to whether Iron Man 4 is in the works. The real question is: Will Robert Downey Jr. even be in Iron Man 4?

Iron Man 4 has been the topic for many interviews with Robert Downey Jr., and in one he confirms that his contract with Marvel ends once press is done on Iron Man 3. Marvel is well-known for signing actors to very long-term contracts, which often include eight films or more. Samuel Jackson signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel, which has included two previous Iron Man films.

You may notice that Jackson wasn’t a major part of a few of those films, but he appeared in them nonetheless. This is also true with Robert Downey Jr., as he has appeared in multiple Marvel films, even if he just showed up in an after-credits scene, such as in The Incredible Hulk (Ed Norton’s Hulk film).

During a recent interview, Robert sat down to discuss his future with Marvel and said that hurting his ankle definitely got him thinking. He went on to say, “It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up. How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun?” He makes a good point. How many times can he repeat his success and is it even appealing to him financially (or artistically) now that he took in a reported $50 million from The Avengers?

In an interview with THR, Robert Downey Jr. gave fans somewhat of a timeframe for what he’s got in mind for his future.:

“As quiet as it’s kept, I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood. So there’s this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I’m sensing a return to that, it’s what me and the missus are doing next. I heard Brady (Tom Brady, NFL Patriots) signed on for three more years with New England, and then he’s done being a quarterback, because he’ll be 40. I’m 47, and [three more years] I’ll be 50.”

He was later asked if he planned on stopping superhero films at 50 and he said, “I don’t know. Right now I don’t have a contract to do anything, and I did for the last five years.” Iron Man 4′s rumored release date of 2016 would be within his three-year period mentioned, but there are no facts pointing to that date from the studio or the actors.

One option being brought up recently is, could Marvel actually replace Robert Downey Jr.? Sure, it seems impossible right now, but as he mentioned previously, he’s nearing 50 and Marvel isn’t going to want to let go of the Iron Man franchise. With Iron Man 3 tracking for a $160 million dollar opening weekend, we imagine it’s difficult for the studios to let go of a money-maker like this, even if it means replacing the irreplaceable. Also interesting for Marvel/Disney is that Iron Man 3 is already beating The Avengers with $195.3 million at the international box office. The film will easily surpass the billion dollar mark.

iron man 3 kevin feigeMarvel’s President, Kevin Feige, did tell Huffington Post that it is, “certainly our plan to continue to have Robert Downey in the persona of Tony Stark for many, many years to come.” This seems to point to Marvel intending to push for Robert Downey Jr. to continue making Iron Man films, but what it really comes down to is whether Robert wants to continue playing Tony Stark.

Feige went on to say that he felt as though Tony Stark could be a lot like James Bond, where one actor (Sean Connery) is always thought of as the original, but that the public would grow to accept different actors playing the role as time moves on.

Marvel’s president further explained that, “It will take a while to fill any shoes, whether it’s filmmaker shoes or writer shoes or certainly actor shoes. I think Tony Stark is an interesting enough and rich enough character that he can persevere.”

Downey seems as though he’s in a position where he has to simply make a decision as to whether he should continue being locked into contracts with Marvel, or if he should move on to making some more artistic films, which he feels are better suited to his past and hopefully his future. Although, we doubt he regrets becoming Iron Man, as it’s netted him a small fortune and completely reinvigorated his entire career, but alas we will most likely see him again as Iron Man when Avengers 2 hits theaters in 2015 despite not yet having a new contract, something he says his lawyers and agents are “having a ball with right now.”

iron man 4 wide image

Another concern about Iron Man 4 is that even his co-stars, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle have said in recent Iron Man 3 press interviews that there won’t be another solo Iron Man film. Now, they aren’t the end all to discussions, but they definitely have their ear to the ground concerning the franchise as it’s much more important to their careers as to whether Iron Man 4 is made, than it would be for Robert Downey Jr.’s career.

What it essentially comes down to is if Robert Downey Jr. wants to continue being part of the “Marvel Machine.” He is, afterall, the man who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Chaplin, and as he stated, comes from a family and group of friends which are very artistic, and staying on the Iron Man toy-ride may not be his goal for the future. Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 is getting great reviews, being called “Iron Man at his best,” so who knows how the success of Iron Man 3 will affect Downey’s decision for Iron Man 4.

For now, we look forward to seeing Downey in Iron Man 3, which is hitting theaters this Friday. We imagine if Robert Downey Jr. does indeed decide to put the suit back on for Iron Man 4, he’ll be the first one to let us know.

I think he should continue in the Avengers series, but honestly? No more Iron Man movies. And I don’t just mean he shouldn’t be in anymore of them, I just think they shouldn’t make anymore past number 3. But we all know how much people love their money, so I doubt they are going to let that franchise slip away.

  • alazear2

RDJ probably recognizes that Iron Man is what really brought about his comeback, and may feel a dedication to the franchise (plus he’s making up to 50 million a movie, which has got to be a serious draw). Now does that mean he needs to continue suiting up, Of course not. If he wanted to become what Fury and Coulson were, tying together the universe by appearing in other characters movies, that would be perfect. It would allow him to continue being Tony Stark (because lets face it that’s who RDJ really plays) and it would open up space in the marvel roster to give other Marvel heroes a movie (Come on Black panther or Heroes for hire). It should also be pointed out that Don Cheadle has been talking a solo War Machine/Iron Patriot movie, which would allow for RDJ to appear but not be the main hero.

  • Samma

Don’t care about Iron Man 4 but I am VERY concerned about Avengers 2.

    • http://twitter.com/w_lowry Will Lowry

Why? It’s being made, and the cast will be back.

      • http://www.facebook.com/dlmarvin05 Dominique Marvin

he hasn’t confirmed his involvement that I know of

      • Samma

His contract with Marvel ends with Iron Man 3 and he hasn’t confirmed that he’ll do more films in the franchise.

  • Bridget

As far as I’m aware, RDJ was signed on to a six movie contract that he “stars” in, as most, if not all of the primary cast of Avengers. So, three Iron Man movies. And three Avengers movies. I mean, if Marvel is doing the three phases, we’ll see him in Avengers 2, and probably Avengers 3. At least from what I’ve read and whatnot. Things can change.

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Joshua Nealey

He had a 4 picture deal, and has stated he doesn’t have a contract in place for Avengers 2 “yet.”

  • 7Starrchasers

This was exactly what was eating away at me after I watched 3…I don’t want to see a 4 because then the way 3 ended would be for nothing…but I don’t want him replaced even more!

    • Yani Clovers

      Three is the magic number!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1329780453 Hazel Morera

I feel exactly the same! I walked out of the theater feeling it was the end, like a “it was a really great ride and tons of fun, but it’s time to let go now” kind of end. That really was the mood I got from that ending and I was really okay with it. Now if they make a fourth one, I wouldn’t mind, but if they don’t I was very satisfied with 3 being the end of this particular franchise.

What I can’t picture is someone else being Iron Man..!! But then I felt the same way when they did the Amazing Spider-Man and it turned out that Andrew Garfield was so much better than Tobey Maguire (at least in my opinion), so who knows…maybe a different Iron Man will come along years down the road that will wow us as much as RDJ did!

In the meantime, I’ll be watching Iron Man 3 for the second time in IMAX this weekend, because yes….it’s that awesome! =)

      • http://www.facebook.com/dlmarvin05 Dominique Marvin

that’s exactly how I felt and what I said in my comment (just a lot shorter lol) No more Iron Man movies. Just let him come back for the Avengers and we’ll be good

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1329780453 Hazel Morera

Lol. I think that’s what we’re all hoping, that they’ll focus on bringing him back for the Avengers rather than in another Iron Man solo film!

I just really hope that Marvel/Disney knows when to stop. I’m generally not a fan of sequel movies because most of the time, they are not nearly as great as the first movie, especially if they’re just making up story plots that don’t even relate to the first film (I’m looking you Shrek/Madagascar/Ice Age 2, 3, 4, etc. And yes, I realize those are DreamWorks, not Disney, though Disney doesn’t have a good track record with sequels either, with the possible exception of the Toy Story trilogy). This is when it becomes apparent they’re doing it for the money and, more than likely, lack of originality for something new.

I really just make an exception with the Marvel movies because I’m a big fan of the comic-books and isn’t it just every comic-book fan’s dream to see the amazing drawings on paper in live-action? lol. Maybe it’s just me. My point with this is that I really, really, really, hope they realize when to stop (now might be a good time!). Leave it on a good note, with fans happy and satisfied….instead of burning out and disrespecting characters/stories/fans with a sequel made only for the sake of making a sequel.

      • 7Starrchasers

Yeah completely, but they kinda cant replace RDJ in say, the fourth film or Avengers 3 if he chooses NOT to return. After all his contract with marvel has ended and this is what I’m afraid of!

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1329780453 Hazel Morera

I feel like he would come back for the Avengers movies (if Iron Man is even included because we have to remember there are more superheroes in the Avengers than the ones we saw and tons of story lines not involving Iron Man), but only that and not do any further Iron Man solo films.

The thing with RDJ is that he comes across as the kind of actor that really loves this character he’s played for the past several years, though I’m sure he’s ready to move on, like a lot of the public is as well. But his interviews and Comic-Con appearances really show him as an actor that genuinely embraces Tony Stark as a character (like Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy, who in multiple interviews expressed pure joy at putting on the wig to impersonate one of our favorite bad guys).

Maybe I’m wrong and it’s all for show, but that’s at least the vibe I get when I seem him in promotional appearances. And for that alone, I think he would come back for future Avengers films, which wouldn’t pose as much of a commitment as signing on for more sequels of Iron Man.

      • Guest

i don’t like movie remakes. i always find the originals were better.

      • Guess

i felt what they were saying was all future settings for iron man and avengers will move towards with Stark Towers, not so much the end of Iron Man.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sabrina-Marie-Sollmann/100003383210767 Sabrina Marie Sollmann

I don’t think it would have been for nothing. In the end, he said he was starting over. He could always do that. The main thing I want to see in The Avengers 2, especially if he decides not to do an Iron Man 4, is for him and Potts to get at least engaged, if not married. Now THAT would be an acceptable ending for me.

      • 7Starrchasers

Well it’s just silly to give closure, have him come back for 4 and give closure AGAIN is all…it just makes 3 a stand alone film and then slightly redundant…But then again if its RDJ and a really good script it can avoid being a Pirates 4.

    • Irene Bakola

Well actually it doesn’t have to be the end of Iron Man. It’s the end of an era. He can be Iron Man again and we can watch the next “chapter” of his life. But if they’re going to replace him then of course it’s better to end it here.

  • Nick D.

Well, it´s called “Iron Man”, not “Tony Stark”. Tony might decide to hand over the suit to a younger guy once he and Pepper start building a family, but that doesn´t mean he couldn´t be in the movie. Get him a smaller, less action-oriented part, and RDJ might be tempted to do that, if only because of some dedication to the franchise that made him a star again.

I really hope they make Iron Man 4, I’m looking forward to see Tony’s wedding, and that boy in Iron Man 3 return, and be something like an aprrendice, and future his sucessor.

    • a13lubin

Is there a reason you have to put that small spoiler in the comments. I haven’t seen the movie yet and yeah I don’t know who the “boy” but you could honestly be a little more considerate and put a spoiler alert

      • http://www.facebook.com/dlmarvin05 Dominique Marvin

      • DamnSomePeople

What? Seriously. This is hardly a spoiler to anyone. If you don’t know who the boy is then that’s that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sam.lorin.9 Sam Lorin

Robert Downey Jr is IRON MAN! No one can replace him! I STILL BELIEVE THAT RDJ WON’T GIVE UP IN HIS FANS! HE STILL HAS THE STRENGTH OF BEING IRON MAN! If you replace him as Iron Man, the story will change. In Iron Man 3 he said “You can take away my house etccccc… BUT I WILL ALWAYS BE IRON MAN!” If you do change him in Iron Man 4 it would be like Heeey thats not Iron Man! The story is not cool anymore please don’rt “James Bond It!” RDJ IS IRON MAN AND NO ONE CAN EVER REPLACE HIM! I STILL BELIEVE HE CAN DO IT! HE STILL HAS THE STRENGTH, INSPIRATION AND THE PASSION! PLEASE MARVEL DONT REPLACE HIM! ENCOURAGE HIM! I LOVE IRON MAN! AND I BELIEVE THAT IRON MAN WILL ALWAYS BE RDJ!

Robert Downey Jr. is a one of a kind actor. He captured my interest in Iron Man movies and later on… the whole Marvel franchise. In fact, he inspires me in a way that he affects my decisions. Not just by the way he acts as Iron Man but also by his ability to make his audiences feel the emotion he is trying to convey. When I watched Iron Man 3 I really felt connected to the character. RDJ is RDJ, and Iron Man will be Iron Man. Okay, maybe it’s about the money and all but please, make Iron Man movies with RDJ as Tony S. or don’t make the movie at all. :) RDJ IS THE BEST

  • Guest

iron man movies are very fun movies to watch. hope downey will continue making them.

  • Guest

it is easier to replace Paltrow, and Cheadle, but replacing Downey ??? not so sure about that one. Tony Stark is Iron Man and Downey is Tony Stark.

  • Laura Jones

If you sit through the credits for Iron Man 3, after the end scene it says “Tony Stark Will Return” so we will see him again, here’s just hoping it’s RDJ who will play him!

    • http://www.facebook.com/cristian.r.pico Cristian Ricardo Peñuela Pico

yeahh he will return in avengers 2

      • joe

i thought Jon Hamm would play Tony Stark in Avengers 2.

        • Ashley

That was a lame April Fools joke

      • Laura Jones

        Its not official yet…

  • Random guy19

iron man is tony stark and tony stark is RDJ if you decide to make another iron man then it should be RDJ i personally didn’t like the fact that he blew up and wasted all his armors but i hope he makes more god bless mark 42

    • Guest

if we were Tony Stark, we probably get rid of that suit too. imagine the frustration he had with that suit. It is like having a car that constantly does start in cold weather. :-)

      • Guest

Oops, missed out “not” . I meant to say:

Indian people always screw up a nice photo at the last moment. Just look at Ben Kingsley in that last photo. “Say Cheese!” “Cheeeeee— oh vait, shtupid fly.”

  • Bianca

You can’t replace Robert Downey Jr. You just CAN’T.

    • Hannah Fontana

Someday they will. The end of RDJ shouldn’t be the end of Iron Man. Let him continue for as long as he is willing and able to do the job. They will replace him eventually.

  • Kristin

If there is an Iron Man 4 and RDJ is not in, I’m not watching it.

  • http://twitter.com/KaylaParmer FluttershybyAssassin

Replacing RDJ in Iron Man just won’t do. If they do that in not watching.if he doesn’t want to be in Iron Man 4 or Avengers 3 don’t even bother producing the movies it just won’t be worth it

  • http://www.facebook.com/jeremy.beylemans Jeremy Beylemans

Robert Downey Jr. Need to play in iron man 4,5,6,… Because hè is awsome and nobody can’t replace him on Tony stark

  • Glaciusx

Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man. End of discussion.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sabrina-Marie-Sollmann/100003383210767 Sabrina Marie Sollmann

Yes, he even said so himself!

  • theboy

Si iron man ha tenido tanto éxito es por la interpretación de Robert Downey Jr. Es una de las pocas películas de super héroes que tiene tanta trama y profundidad; y esto todo se lo debe a Downey Jr.

  • Claire

As others have said, RDJ is Tony Stark. I can’t see anyone else in the role at all, and I try to be open minded with stuff like this. But, no. RDJ as Tony is irreplaceable.

  • Guest

IRON MAN will not be iron man w/o RDJ.. marvel should think of it hundred times or more.. and RDJ is irreplaceable at all..

  • guest

    RDJ is Iron Man…Case closed!

  • jhsdbnfbn

That guy is awesome and, in my opinion, he should be included in Iron Man 4

  • Sasha

Superheroes can be played by more than one actor (i.e. a new spiderman movie coming out only years after the first trilogy came out), but to switch actors while a series is still going on is just tacky.

  • Mariel

I love iron man, but we should let RDJ move on. I’m so excited for Iron Man 3, but I will be happy if its the last one. Too many of my favorite franchises have suffered by not quitting while they’re ahead. Marvel/ Disney doesn’t care about whether Iron man’s story should continue. They don’t care about the plot or the art of the saga. All they care about is the cash. As someone dedicated to good story telling, I think this should be the last Iron man.

  • shawn

I loved all the movies with him in it but think of this how many movies is too much look at the original Spiderman movies awesome movies In my opinion the new Spiderman sucked bad rdj is and always will will be ironman and the way they ended left me content please don’t kill the franchise with many movies

  • Larry

I want to know how Iron Man 4 is even a possibility when all the suits were destroyed at the end of Iron Man 3! Or even The Avengers 2 when they said that Iron Man will be a big focus! How? All the suits are GONE! Do you think that one last suit was saved down in the bunker when the left flew out…just in case? Kind of like a backup plan? Thoughts anybody?

    • James

He made 40+ suits in less than a year. I think he can whip up a new suit before Avengers 2 lol.

  • Larry

*When the REST flew out….not left. lol Sorry.

  • Cristina

Nope, I can’t see Iron Man’s suit in another actor. I just can’t. Robert Downey Jr is the face of Iron Man. It’s a little disappointing for the fans to find out he would like to leave, and yes that is selfish but it’s an honest feedback being made. Iron Man wouldn’t be the same if his main actor would be replaced. About Spiderman, I didn’t like “The amazing Spider-Man” as much as when Toby was the actor in it. It just wasn’t the same and the feeling of “I can’t wait to see this movie” completely vanished with Spider-Man.

  • Cassey

Iron Man 4 needs to be made ! so much more to discover & Without Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man would NOT be the same .

  • Dhruvin

    Robert Downey Jr Rocksssss
    Waiting for ironman 4
And waiting to see Robert Downey Jr as Ironman in Ironman 4,5,6,…….

  • tony

Marvel must make at least 10 iron man movies

  • Marvel_info

Rdj actually signed another contract! He will be in the next Avengers movie and in Iron Man 4! Iron Man 4 is believed to be released on May 9, 2017 says Marvel and Walt Disney!

    • Liderc

This is not true, he has not signed any contract, not even for Avengers 2 yet.

  • Ym

Iron man muuuuuuuuusssssssssttttttt carry on. You cannot replace robert downey jr. He is the best . There is no changing it. And iron man 3 was awesome

  • Ym

If they cancel iron man 3 they are ending one of the most fantastic thongs ever.

  • Ym

Iron man helps childrens imagination to grow. It certainly did it to mine, if it is cancled i will be crushed

  • David

How can they think of changing RDJ? it won’t be the same with out him it will be shit to be honest with you if they change RDJ then they will have to re make all the films again, I DON’T THINK SO!

    • Liderc

That’s what people said about James Bond too heh.

  • T

I think that if RDJ is going to leave but they want to keep Ironman, they should have Tony Stark actually pass the Ironman torch to a younger guy. So Stark leaves when RDJ leaves and a new character is created to be the new Ironman.

  • Irene Bakola

It’s not like James Bond!!!!! James Bond is James Bond! Iron Man is Tony Stark! Whatever they make with another actor will look like an imitation of RDJ’s movies!!!

  • prem

please dont change Robert Downey jr. He is The Iron Man…..

  • Marvin

RDJ (Robert Downey Jr.) Is IRON MAN! ~~ End Of Discussion

  • Marvin

If RDJ Didn’t played the role Of Iron Man i wouldn’t even watch it From Movie 1 to 3 ~

NO!!: i love robert he has bee in all of the iron man films he will stay and i mean that if he isn’t in this one well you might as well just not make the new movie just saying

Robert Downey is the best actor that nobody can not replace ..

  • Nael Alami

No way Iron Man just wont be the same without robert
