Glee’s “Lights Out” episode revealed what seems to be the first changes to Finn Hudson’s storyline on the show after it was revealed that Cory Monteith would be checking in to rehab and would not finish filming season 4.

You may remember last episode when Finn returned to the stage and pleaded for Will to treat him as an equal. They were going to go to go full steam ahead, practice their butts off, and win Regionals. Will agreed, but if you saw tonight’s episode “Lights Out,” you may have noticed Finn was nowhere to be seen.

Most Glee fans were aware of this, but there’s even more evidence that the show is being edited around Cory Monteith’s absence.

Earlier this week, we posted this gallery of episodic stills that featured one photo of Finn standing next to Will on the stage at McKinley. Check out the picture and the caption below:

Finn was definitely not in this scene or in any other part of the episode for that to happen.

UPDATE: This article previously stated Jessica Sanchez was not in the episode. This is not true.

Other photos of Blaine and Sam talking to Becky and Blaine as Nightbird with a flashlight also were labeled under the “Lights Out” still with captions:

Though it could have simply been a mistake in labeling, it seems that a lot of the original episode was cut out of what made it to our TV screens for the “Lights Out” episode. It’s also very rare that photos released by Fox are not only mislabeled but remain available for extended periods of time (these photos have not been changed or edited as of this posting).

It may also be worth noting: didn’t “At The Ballet” seem just a bit longer than most of the musical performances that happen on the show? Was this to make up for lost time in the other storylines that may have potentially been cut from the episode?

What are your thoughts about these photos and the altered storylines of Glee. Do you think we’ll ever find out what Nightbird was investigating, after all? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

I loved the episode without the Blaine stuff. There was a lot already going on.

I was reaaaaally looking forward to Nightbird, so very disappointed on that front. The editing of the entire episode also felt really choppy and awkward, but it makes sense if they were having to move/cut things at the last minute re: Finn.

Jessica Sanchez did make it into the episode…

I’m thinking that his scenes probably further cemented him as a regular character and it would’ve been even HARDER to suddenly explain away his absence afterwards. That being said, I don’t know why they didn’t edit LAST WEEK’S episode and at least take out the “Guess what! I’m coming back to McKinley!!!” bit that happened at the end. Instead, it was all “Finn’s back on to co-run the Glee Club!!!!” “….soooooooo…. where’s Finn???”

I’m glad they cut that stuff out. That being said, as nice as the “At the Ballet” song was, I would’ve much preferred an extended “The Longest Time” instead lol

It’s odd that there was no Finn but Glee’s facebook page definitely used that picture of Mr. Schu and Finn as a promo ‘Glee is on! Are you watching?’

  • theaterboy1

I actually love that they did the whole version of “At the Ballet” and didn’t edit it down. I’m hoping they include the scene with Blaine and Sam interrogating Becky on the DVD, if nothing else than to just fill in the missing gaps in the episode. But I still loved the episode regardless!

Ryan seems to be good if people bug him on twitter to post the scenes. He’s done it with the ring scene and the bridesmaids scene, with Hello Twelve as well I think

  • Vanj203

I understand why they left Finn out but it doesn’t explain why Blaine and Sam’s investigation into the real culprit of the shooting was cut. It would have put more focus on the seriousness of what Becky did, and kept the guns + troubled youth storyline in the forefront. It is timely after all.

I was wondering that too. It’s kind of far-fetched but I wonder if Finn was somehow involved in that plot line and they couldn’t reshoot it? Like what if Finn suggested they try to find out more or something? Just a thought.

Totally feel Ryder and Kitty’s pain. Totally unexpected story line. I just wished that Brittany was there so we could finally get her story!

  • Jeff Dodge

Jessica Sanchez was in the episode. That still of her above is what I saw in tonight’s episode.

  • Marie

Although the circumstances for Cory’s absence are horrible, I do think there are possible benefits to Finn being gone. Just look at how much was going on in this episode. SO MUCH. A crazy amount. Because their cast is far too big. They really, really need to let some people go, or just decide the main characters are, and solely focus on them (I could probably name 15 people that are considered main characters). And I think this episode worked perfectly fine without Cory (although like Will said, if Cory had already filmed, why wasn’t THIS is last episode?).

    • johalieb

now they are even more horrible and sad, since Cory died. So this episode that we are missing him turns out to be the first of his being gone. Re: Cory already filmed. He might not have looked great or had been somewhat off his game. Although every one on the set has always said he was always very professional and hardworking.. He’d looked pretty healthy in the last year except for that weight loss which, in hindsight might not have been entirely intentional. RIP Cory.

I’m somehow extremely disapointed an episode of Glee once again. I’m seriously losing interest and even getting emotionaly detatched. I’m not sure i’m going to be watching season five. I agree with Will and Marie, if they already filmed with Cory why didn’t they let him have THIS be his last episode and explain his absence in the next one. I’m pretty curious as to see/hear what they come up with to eplain it.
I’m seriously about this close to stop watching…

  • Andy

Not the first time that scenes from the promos end up getting cut out of the episode and totally changing the storylines. But I suppose if the episode wasn’t in the can yet when Cory left, they probably just reshot the bits they needed him out of. Blaine’s stuff getting cut out was likely more due to the fact that the writers don’t know how to write a 42 minute script.

At The Ballet was so strong compared to everything in Lima because NY has Lea, Naya, Chris and as guest star SJP. Other then Matt Morrison there is no talent to compare to what they have in NY. Lima is nothing but flashy costums and no substance. Hoping S5 puts the Newbies on the back ground. Moves Finn and Blaine to NY and gives that locations the bulk of focus.

Finn looks so damn cute in that picture!

    • johalieb

CM’s good looks were enhanced by his weight loss (he lost 20lbs). You can see his high cheekbones better. He (was) a very handsome guy.

  • http://twitter.com/TrueKlainer21 Klaine Is On Fire ♥

This explains so much! I never even thought that Cory not being available for the last episodes would be the reason non of these things made it into the episode! Just thought they were squished for time or something :)

  • LilyLuna

One other thing I noticed, they credited Amber Riley and Mark Salling at he beginning of the episode, but they didn’t appear. Was Puck originally supposed to appear with Finn again at all? I know Mercedes is going to be back *next* week according to the promo.

To be honest, I’m glad they cut out the nightbird interrogation of Becky. It seemed a pretty insensitive way to get the truth, considering how tastefully the shooting stars episode was done.
