‘Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely’ (2000)
“Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely” is one of the many heartbreaking Backstreet Boys’ songs. The song talks about the misery and pain of a broken heart in a way that makes you want to cry for the boy band. The melancholy song gets even more desperate and mournful when one watches the music video which links lost loves to dead loves and makes the loss of one’s heart seem all the more final.
The song is the third single off of the third Backstreet Boys album, “Millennium.” The 1999 song is all the more relevant and poignant in 2013.

‘Shape Of My Heart’ (2000)
What’s more romantic than a guy who’s been keeping “you in the dark” wanting to “show you the shape of [his] heart”? Five guys harmonizing as they figuratively do just that from a theater stage.
As the first single off the BSB’s third U.S. album, “Black & Blue,” “Shape Of My Heart,” starts off with four identifiable notes that make any child of the ’90s immediately join in with Brian’s hum and obligatory “yeah yeahs.” The blue-tinted music video adds to the deliciously sappy song, as do the Boys’ pained looks from not quite understanding what it means when A.J. sings, “sadness is beautiful/ loneliness that’s tragical.”
I’m still not sure when or how “sadness is beautiful,” but I can tell you that it doesn’t matter because that song is beautiful enough to warrant a little confusion. “Shape Of My Heart” FTW!

‘The Call’ (2001)
Hold the phone- (uh, pun intended?) the saccharine harmonies of our favorite boy banders aren’t crooning about the shape of their hearts of wanting it that way, but about — wait for it — cheating. Yep, turns out that the Backstreet Boys can actually be dirty little adulterers.
What makes this song the best, though, is that it’s about getting caught being bad, proving that nice guys DO finish first! Oh BSB, can you do anything wrong? I didn’t think so. It doesn’t hurt that the chorus is insanely catchy and the music video is a nice throwback to Nokia cellphones. Plus, putting on “The Call” during a party pretty much makes you an instant winner.

‘Climbing The Walls’ (2008)
This song came in a particularly crazy part of my life: freshman year of college. The chorus lyrics are what I find particularly poignant: “No, I can’t let you go. You’re a part of me now, caught by the taste of your kiss. And I don’t wanna know the reason why I can’t stay forever like this. Now I’m climbing the walls cause I miss you.”
It’s such a clear visual to describe the way you feel when someone you used to know/see everyday is no longer a part of your life. At the time, I was missing all of my family and friends from home, and this song was my go- to hairbrush song for belting in my dorm room.
