Good news for Gleeks: Fox has renewed its smash hit musical series Glee for not one, but two more years!

EW has learned that Fox has finally finalized the deal with the creators of Glee to bring the show back for two more years, extending its run through 2015 (at least).

Fox entertainment president Kevin O’Reilly offered the following statement about the renewal:

Glee debuted as the first and only successful musical comedy series on television, and more than four years later, it continues to defy genres, break new ground and have a significant impact on popular culture.

Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire Glee team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them to talk about, share, debate and engage with the show – and I’m absolutely thrilled to have them on board for another two seasons.

Yes, this means that Murphy and his team will indeed be back next year, despite recent speculation that they might not return after season 4.

Are you happy that there’ll be two more years of Glee? Lea Michele sure is! Look what she tweeted right after the announcement was made:

Best news in what has otherwise been a terrible news week.

    What.

  • http://twitter.com/RyanHBP Ryan Floyd

Oh God I’m trapped in this cycle of pain for another 2 years.

    • Enelya

You could just not watch it?

      • Marie

Glee is a bizarre drug that fans get addicted to. It’s easier said than done. :-p

    • http://blackrapture.tumblr.com/ thegoodshipdestiel

      hahahahaha you read my mind.

    • Caitlyn

Watching Glee is really like being in a hostage situation.

    • DocTony

I never quite understand comments like this, or why people root for certain shows to be cancelled. The solution seems pretty simple–if you don’t like a show, don’t watch it. There is certainly no reason it should cause a “cycle of pain” for anyone.

      • http://twitter.com/ThoughtsofaNerd Sarah Hay

I think it’s just that for some people, myself included, it seems a little bizarre to just stop watching a show that you have loved for so long (irrespective of the fact that you might not like a lot of the changes its made). Glee has had quite the impact on a lot of people’s lives and it feels like it would be a shame not to see it through.
In regards to the ‘cycle of pain’ comment, I completely agree with it. From the outside, Glee seems like a fun-loving show with the occasional musical number. It used that to draw viewers in in the first season. But then it reared it’s ugly head and put fan favourite characters through Hell and back, and really stopped being a ‘comedy’ in my book. But for whatever reason we keep coming back for more!

It’s sad because now they’re most likely to do half the season in just Lima and the other half in NY.

  • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

WOW! That hardly ever happens, eh? I think they’re jumping the gun a bit here. Hopefully though, they’ll plan the two years out in advance so that we’ll have two seamless years of plot instead of random disjointed and dropped plot holes and shit lol

Maybe we’ll get new producers and they’ll do like, their own two almost self-contained seasons. It’d be nice to see the quality of the show pick up.

    • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

lol comment in before RIB had been announced to be staying lol

OMG, I hardly believe it, is this real? Just made my day :)

  • Jessica

Booo. The only good that come from this is using the profits Glee brings in to subsides critically successful yet ratings deprived shows. If Fox doesn’t do that, then this is the worst news I’ve heard all day.

  • Tomas

I’m really happy to hear this! =D

  • http://twitter.com/w_lowry Will Lowry

I’m glad that we get season 5, we need a season for closure, but I’m really surprised they’re going to go and give them season 6 right away. I wonder what this’ll mean for the cast.

  • Marie

And by the sixth season, 5 people will be watching.

Seriously, they need to end it while people still care. I was hoping there would be one season left for closure, and then we’d be done. But they’re really trying to milk it. I’m already barely caring.

Glee, I loved you once, but I’m done after this season. I could’ve maybe taken one more season of your crap to see closure. But two is too long. After this season, I’m done. Bye.

  • theaterboy1

Best news I’ve heard all day!!! Love that it was renewed for two more seasons! It has been so great these past few episodes and the season as a whole! Can’t wait to see what they come up with for season 5 and 6!

  • http://purplehrdwonder.livejournal.com/ Caitlin Kelly

Pleased, because season 4 has been my favorite season thus far, but surprised it would get a two-season renewal. Contracts through a sixth season, sure, but actual renewal? *Very* surprising.

  • http://forgiveyourmind.tumblr.com/ Tariq

2 more years of no continuity and probably lame excuses made for Artie/Brittany/Tina/Blaine to appear on the show? …yaaaay. -____-

    • Marie

Brother Tariq, I wish you were a Glee Chat regular.

    • Enelya

Well, this season is ending at Regionals which would not be held at the end of the school year, Nationals is held near the end of the school year. So it makes complete sense that they wouldn’t be graduating yet because obviously season 5 would just start up after Regionals.

      • http://twitter.com/infinitelymolly Molly Hussey

no actually. in season 1 ended at regionals because they lost and then season 2 started at the beginning of the year. i gather that season4 ending at regionals means they lose…

      • http://twitter.com/alexacadia alex

IF they win at regionals (long shot IMO) then i theorize the winter finale will be nationals, january open with graduation, then summer/adjustment to college shows untl a may finale of the klaine wedding? (or, hopefully not, but with the way the show’s going that’s probably how quickly they’ll marry)
and then that sets season 6 up pretty quickly to get everyone to new york, in case they do want a spin-off eventually or just a complete move to new york.

  • http://twitter.com/HungerSlytherin Jeremy

Im wondering if Ryan murphy’s Idea he has for Season 5 is why Season 5 and 6 are greenlit. I enjoy glee. I just hope they bring something fresh in the next two seasons.

  • Sara C

glee tests my loyalty. i have this unconditional love for misfits in musicals, but this show sucks 80% of the time. it’s still the highlight of my week, but i was hoping it would be one season for closure and then a spin-off for the NY characters and keep glee a high school show. and maybe get new writers – someone who knows something about consistency and character development.

    • Amy Fry

      exactly my sentiments.

  • http://ravenclaw1991.tumblr.com/ ravenclaw1991

Do you mean to say people actually watch this show still? I could’ve swore everyone hated it. Guess I was wrong. Never seen the show before, never plan on watching it, I just think seeing everyone’s reactions are priceless though. :)

    • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

lol everyone does hate it. It’s that trainwreck you just can’t look away from. The bad habit you know you should quit. That jealous boyfriend you know you should leave. But somehow, every week, you get sucked in time and time again, so matter how crappy or outlandish the scenes and scenarios are lol

I can’t imagine anyone tuning in NOW and loving it, but as someone who’s been watching since the first season, despite all the rage the episodes induce in me sometimes, I just… can’t NOT watch it lol Somehow, I’m still tuning in every week lol

      It’s a love-hate relationship.

      • Bethany

I tuned in this season (w/relatively minimal knowledge of the show) and I became addicted. Watched 3 seasons in 5 days and I’m excited about the renewal.

        • Marie

What drew you in? You were safe! You were clean! And now, you’ve gotten into the narcotic that is Glee!

          • Risikafox

I’m a new fan too, started watching a couple months ago. And I was hooked immediately, haha.
Watching Glee is kind of like being in a relationship. You know the other person isn’t perfect, but their flaws are part of the reason you’re madly in love with them.

          • Marie

I think I’m getting ready to break-up with Glee though. Although I think processing the show over years versus recently changes the experience entirely.

          • http://twitter.com/CassiopeiaDrake Cassie Drake

“Awww baby! I didn’t mean it! I can change! We can go back to the way things were! You just know how I get sometimes! I’m still the same show deep down inside! I’ve always been silly and filled with plot holes! Please! Give me another chance! I can be the show you once loved!!!”

            lol

      • Teranel

… and for me, it’s been a love/hate relationship (more on the hate side) since 1×02 originally aired. I don’t think I can do this to myself for two more years.

  • andy

    *sighs*

  • Anne

well, i for one still love glee and am very happy about this news! 2 more seasons, at least, yayayay :) so don’t take glee too serious and open yourself up to joy, guys…

    • http://twitter.com/plischt plischt

      Word!

  • Mand1591

can we acknowledge the clear snub to Smash… “only successful musical”

    • http://twitter.com/BilliamSays Bill Anderson

      That’s because “Smash” has been anything but a….dare I say it… Smash…

Don’t get me wrong, I love both shows. But Smash has had absolutely no success.
Also, you’re taking the quote out of context.
      “First only successful musical COMEDY.”

      Smash is a musical drama.

      • Andy

        Glee is barely a comedy

    • GoodFinder

I would also add that that the sentence starts with “Glee debuted…” that means when it started. Not now.

      • Thunderpussy HOOOO!

Hey. I think I know you. This sucks huh? The renewal I mean.

  • Sage

Seriously, best news I’ve had all week! I’ve been so scared that this was the last season!

  • LilyLuna

I’m thrilled about season 5, need closure that we wouldn’t have gotten had they ended it this season. I’ll decide how I feel about season 6 once we see how 5 goes, but for bow, I’m happy. :)

    • LilyLuna

      *Now

  • Gary65

    Goodbye world :(

  • Jake

Let’s take this with a “half-full” position: maybe this means the producers sat down and told the network what’s supposed to happen in the next two years, and it was good enough for them to renew it. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN (No really, it’s Glee. Anything could happen. They don’t abide by the predetermined rules of storytelling or TV.)

  • Risikafox

I’m personally super excited. =D I really hope they use the time they’ve been given to realistically follow through with most of the plot lines they’ve been setting up.

  • http://twitter.com/acjub CK

Well damn. I dont like any of the new characters, I think I’m only watching it because of Darren at this point. This will be interesting.

  • http://twitter.com/Hmarjus2 Martrel A. Howard

OH WOW!!!!! MORE NEW YORK!!!!!!!!!!!! make Lima the B plot and the main Plot New York!!!

  • S

    Ugh. Why.

  • http://www.korracast.com/ Fravit

    that’s unfortunate

  • Katie

I don’t get all the people who are saying that this show shouldn’t be continued cause it sucks. by all means if you feel that it sucks soo much just don’t watch it and all your problems related to this show would magically disappear! Personally i feel that this show has helped me through so much; it has taught me that no matter how much of a misfit you are, there’s always gonna be a place where you’ll fit it, it has taught me that two people who have completely opposite characters can indeed become the best of friends, it has shown me what true friends should be like. And who can say anything about the music?? half of the songs on this show i did not know and would not know had it not been for the glee. the title of the show completely describes how i feel whenever i see it. glee has definitely become one of the highlights of my life and i for one am suuper excited that its on for 2 more seasons at least!!

I don’t understand the Gleeks on this page. I’m not a HUGE fan of the show, but I really like it, I watch it weekly. It has it’s interesting storylines and characters (like Rachel in New York) and it’s useless characters (like Ryder)…

I still like the show, and I’m really excited for season 5 and 6. Someone on a Glee panel once said that it was impossible to do anything right for Glee fans. I’m starting to think it’s true…

  • Linda

Not understanding why folks who claim to hate a tv show would be so upset it was renewed, and take the time to bemoan that fact on a fan site. Just don’t watch it. The horror that is the awful, misogynistic Two and a Half Men has been on for what, going on ten years? I deal with it by not paying it any attention and spending my time on things that I do enjoy. If Glee causes you so much pain, just walk away.

  • Christian

Here’s my issue. Even if they did fix their mistakes they’ve made the past two seasons, the mistakes made before can’t be fixed. They’re here forever, and they bring down the series.

  • http://twitter.com/Tygridia Tygridia

Happy about the renewal, but can they please drop the part from Lima? What’s left of the original cast are going to graduate and I don’t care about the newbies at all… Let’s turn the show into something more mature and move to NY to follow Rachel on Broadway, Kurt on Vogue and probably Blaine in whatever he is doing next year… and just get rid of the 2.0

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rachel-Whelen/514317641 Rachel Whelen

“Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire Glee team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them” AHAHAHAA! Seriously, this statement is as about true as saying Glee has character development and continuity.

  • Linda

Love the vintage Season One photo, by the way.
