White Frog, the independent drama starring fandom faves Booboo Stewart (Twilight,) Harry Shum Jr., (Glee) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf) has finally received a theatrical release date after being completed in 2011.

White Frog, directed by Quentin Lee and penned by mother-daughter team Ellie and Fabienne Wen, and which also stars BD Wong, Joan Chen and Gregg Sulkin, will be released in selected cinemas on May 10 after debuting at the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival in March of 2012.

The film stars Booboo Stewart as Nick Young, a high school freshman with Asberger’s Syndrome. Nick’s world and seemingly-perfect family is shaken by the death of Nick’s older brother Chaz, played by Harry Shum Jr. After Chaz’s funeral, Nick finds himself adopted by his brother’s friends, including Doug (Tyler Posey) and, through spending time with them, discovers more about his brother’s private fears and hidden dreams.

Watch the trailer for White Frog below:

The Center for Asian American Media explains White Frog‘s unusual title in their review of the film.

White Frog, as it says in film, is a Vietnamese dish, where a frog is put inside a coconut for days. The frog becomes tender and smells just like coconut, much like a person in a foreign community, ending up just like anyone else there, and still looks different from everyone else.

The film provides an awakening to true meaning of being oneself. As Nick strives to survive the influence of his ethnic identity as an Asian American, economic identity as one coming from a well-off family, and social identity as a patient of Asperger’s syndrome, we arrive at the conclusion that there is no reason to be a white frog, to be a blinded creature in closed shelter, not knowing its place in the world and absorbing what is provided despite of its real feelings.

The official White Frog Twitter also released this new poster to celebrate the film’s cinematic release date.

Will you see this film at the cinema? Whose performance are you most looking forward to in White Frog?

Not really the sort of movie I’d usually watch, but I’d definitely like to see it. :) Especially because of Tyler Posey! I also like Gregg Sulkin too, so that’s another plus. I’ll probably have to wait until its on dvd because I doubt it’ll be in any cinemas where I live. I hate selected releases!

Oh man! Harry Shum Jr AND BD Wong??? If only George Takei had been in it, it would’ve had my three favourite Asians ever! [and yes, I know that he's of a different Asian race completely from the other two]

I’m sad to know right off the bat that Harry Shum Jr’s character dies =/ not saying that it was a spoiler, just sad to know that he won’t be in the film as much. That being said, I would totally check this out.
