Smash moved to Saturday, bringing Liza Minnelli with it. Share your thoughts on the episode and get a look ahead to 2×11 “The Dress Rehearsal.”

What did you think of “The Surprise Party”? How did you like Liza Minnelli’s performance? Did Karen handle the situation with Derek correctly? Will Eileen have better luck with Richard than she did with Nick? What was your favorite song of the night?

Smash returns next Saturday with 2×11 “The Dress Rehearsal.”

As Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing) race to ready “Bombshell” for previews, Tom’s eagerness to prove himself may not be the best thing for the show. An onstage mishap forces Ivy (Megan Hilty) to make a choice, while tension mounts at “Hit List” as Karen (Katharine McPhee) becomes suspicious of Derek’s (Jack Davenport) motives towards her. Anjelica Huston, Jeremy Jordan, Leslie Odom, Jr., Krysta Rodriguez and Andy Mientus also star. Jamey Sheridan and Jesse L. Martin guest star.

YAY! Karen FINALLY stood up for herself and told off Jimmy and Derek. I loved it!

Great episode! Can’t wait for next week!

I loved it :) Felt bad for Tom, but I totally understand where Ivy’s coming from. I just wish they could find a way. That friendship is great. And does this mean Derek and Ivy will be getting back together? I hope so, because Derek needs to get over Karen. It’s kinda weird how obsessed he is.

I really enjoyed this episode every scene and situation flowed well into each other. Karen grew some balls!

Julia seems like shes going to become Kyle’s mentor.

This Karen Derrick Jimmy triangle is interesting. Ideally id like to see Karen with Derrick but the fact that she stood up to them both made my heart sing!!!!!

Tom is good but he cant seem to separate his emotional ties from his professional duties and its quite annoying.

“you’ll get back up again” i sooo was waiting for a reprise of Sam singing Stand again lol

Eileen and Richard are too cute. Definitely a budding Power Couple.

Karen and Anna are friends but now that they’ll be competitive female leads in Hitlist that friendship may get very strained especially since it appears that the story is going to become about “The Diva’s” fall from grace and Amanda’s role in it? I really need a definitive story line for Hitlist.

Damn it Karen the cocaine in Jimmy’s pocket should have made you say… No I cant do this. Yes its just dinner but hardcore drugs are never a good thing. If anything throw it away don’t put it back in the pocket. Argh.

The scenes of Julia and Kyle and . . . what’s-his-name, Art Director Man Love Interest, where they were all working on the story board together, those were my favourite from a character development standpoint AND a plot progression standpoint. By plot progression I mean instead of having an issue for the episode that gets tied up in a way that hasn’t actually solved the issue – think Tom and Ivy not being friends while he’s her director, or the Eileen setting up the journos for the Liza song to get better press but it not changing the Weasel’s opinion – instead an issue arises in the episode that will have a significant influence on future episodes. Last episode it was Ivy’s mum getting cast in Bombshell, this episode it was the decision to make the Diva role much bigger and reduce Karen’s part, which we won’t see the impact of until next week, but I’m certainly intrigued as to how this will work out.

PS: Was that Katharine McPhee singing “Bittersweet Symphony”? It was beautiful, I wish they’d let it play out longer.

It was Megan Hilty, not Katherine McPhee.

Very smart analysis Kat! Hadn’t really thought it through the way you have and indeed, especially in the Tom/Ivy situation, things don’t seem to have been tied up in a satisfactory way. Though, I guess you could say, the two of them came to some kind of “understanding” that for now, they won’t be “friends” while trying to work together. Can’t imagine how that would work in real life after being friends for so many years as we’re given to understand…Love that you can’t remember the name of the theatre director/love interest either (see my post on the latest Smash Chat entry). Very satisfying episode all-round I thought.

This episode was the best so far this season, IMHO. I know I should get over it, but I really can’t stand that Ivy has so many friends, is so loved by her friends and that she always seems to come out on top. I know, I know, she felt threatened in season one and therefore lashed out, but some of the things she did were SO wrong.
As much as I hate to see the opportunity that Karen made for HERSELF minimized, I think it is great that Anna will have a bigger part because she is very talented. The diva’s scene was AWESOME last week and it will make the story that much better with more of her.
