Despite what the press may have you believe, Smash is a show worth your time. Here we take a look at how it has evolved and why you should come along as Smash moves to Saturday nights.

It’s no secret that Smash’s ratings have been less than stellar. A few weeks ago it hit record lows and the situation has become so dire that the network was cornered into moving it to a Saturday night time slot. (Were you as shocked as we were to learn that original content still premiered on weekends? Because, yeah. Who even knew that was still a thing?!) The most likely scenario to expect from the change is that the show will move to its new spot, where it’ll become lost in the chaos of the weekend, limp along until the final episodes of the season play out, to where Smash will reach its ultimate demise.

But here’s the thing. Smash is actually a good show.

Now before everyone starts lighting those torches and sharpening those pitchforks, allow us to have a moment of your time to present the evidence. Hopefully though, you can try and leave those pesky expectations at the door and judge the show for what it is. Not for what is has been or what everyone is saying it is. If you’re intrigued and like what you see then maybe you can tune in next week! But if not, that’s ok too. Just continue to not-watch and we’ll let this thing play out as expected.

Dropping the Dead Weight

Smash - Season 2

Smash had a lot of trouble in its first season. There’s no denying it. Plot direction was shaky, there were several irrelevant characters with lackluster talent, and some of the magic of the premier was lost. But virtually everything the fans passionately disliked was eliminated. Julia’s (frequently irritating) son Leo and (often distracting) husband Frank were phased out. The manipulating personal assistant Ellis was written off. And even Karen’s adulterer boyfriend was dropped along the way. They cut out all that unnecessary jazz and put their energy into constructing characters worth following.

Fans can’t really ask for more than that. The production listened to the audience’s feedback and agreed with them. They recognized there were weaknesses and instead of sticking to their guns despite the problem, they chose to rectify the situation. There are quite a few shows on TV right now that could afford to learn this same lesson. It may have taken Smash a while to settle into itself, but it got there in the end. And, it would be very sad if this was a ‘too little too late’ situation because there’s still so much in this show to enjoy.

Old Favorites Remain

Old Favorites Remain

You know how on some shows there’s just that one character everyone loves? Well, on Smash that prize goes to Tom Levitt. Seriously, Tom is a perfect human being and what Christian Borle brings to the role is priceless. If you have a problem with Tom your judgment is going to be seriously questioned. It’s not just his mannerisms, kindness, or talent that makes you fall in love with him – it’s also his relationship with Julia. Those two are family. The richness Debra Messing brings to her half of the pairing is absolutely heart warming. Their relationship makes people believe in friendship. Long after all the couples on this show fall apart, Tom and Julia will be as strong as ever.

Derek is another character that hasn’t lost the qualities that make him special. He’s still an arrogant, bossy, entitled ass… But frankly, these are the things we love about him. We love how he can command a room or take charge of a situation. Because at the end of the day, we know that he does it to get the best out of a show or a person. He pushes and antagonizes to make things better. Not to mention, this season Derek has expanded a bit and we’re finally getting to see some of his vulnerabilities that were only hinted at before.

On top of all that, the focus of the show has shifted back to the theater. No more cheating partners, scheming assistants, or mamma drama. The show is centered around two up and coming shows – Bombshell and Hit List.

Which brings us to…

Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus

Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus

Easily the best new additions to the show – Jeremy and Andy play the friendly and professional theater duo Jimmy Collins and Kyle Bishop. The two characters are introduced as a composing and writing team at the very start of their careers. Jimmy is a scrappy and slightly troubled soul that is also spilling over with talent. Since he’s not the easiest to get along with, Kyle his best friend and business partner often acts as his – charming and sweet – doorway to the world.

Now, we can admit these aren’t the most original characters in the world… But, the actors who inhabit these guys have made them incredibly compelling and watchable. It takes a special kind of talent and chemistry to really pull off the type of relationship that Jimmy and Kyle have. The two are life long friends but they’re also trying to break into an extremely competitive business… Add to that the underlying romantic tension between the pair and you have a recipe for something quite entertaining.

Jeremy and Andy have impressed us week-after-week with what they’ve brought to the show. Andy gives Kyle a youthful and optimistic spirit that somehow avoids becoming naive or bland. He’s sweet, real, layered… And every time he’s on screen you have to force yourself from smiling like a loon. Jimmy on the other hand is a bit abrasive and impatient and the audience is supposed to wonder why Kyle would put up with him. Although, from the second Jeremy comes on screen, his charisma takes over and you fall in love instantly.

This isn’t even highlighting their outstanding vocal performances on the show! Which are absolutely swoon worthy bee-tee-dubs. If you don’t love either of these songs then we recommend you get your ears checked. Fast.

‘Smash’ – Broadway Here I Come

‘Smash’ – This Will Be Our Year

Broadway Quality Performances

There is no need to kid ourselves about this one. Musical theater just isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You either enjoy it or tease, mercilessly, those that do. But here’s the thing. A lot of people just haven’t been exposed to Broadway or theater culture. Not everyone has access to theatrical venues much less the finances to afford ticket prices. In reality this sort of entertainment is still kind of reserved for a fortunate few.

There is so much fun to be had in musical theater! Shows like Glee have really popped open the door to this demographic and shown that singing and dancing kids can be extremely successful. That being said though, Glee has its own type of audience. It’s not geared for adults nor does it have the on stage Broadway element of Smash. Take a look at these for example:

‘Smash’ – Public Relations

‘Smash’ – (Let’s Start) Tomorrow Tonight

And if those are a little to Classic Broadway for you, maybe something a little more contemporary will satisfy your apatite

‘Smash’ – I Heard Your Voice in a Dream

Tell us one place we can see something like this on TV other than Smash? There HAS to be an audience for this type of thing. A sizeable and interested group willing to tune in every week. And frankly, part of that group is probably you. How many of you have fallen in love with Rent, Chicago, Across the Universe, or Moulin Rouge, or even Footloose?! These are all different expressions of a singular concept. Story + Music = Entertainment. And Smash is just a new adaptation of the musical genre.

Maybe the tide has already turned and it’s too late for this show to regain its footing. It’s really not because the show is a flop. It’s because the audience gave up just a little too soon or because the intended viewers never found the show to begin with. If the network wants to let Smash go, so be it, but we refuse to let it go down with a bad name. Because, at the end of the day – this was the show brave enough to invest in televised musical theater – and that’s something to be proud of.

What do you think of ‘Smash’? Is it something more people should be watching or a show that has reached its end?

I may be the only one, but I liked Ellis. He was a good clever villain who is still working behind the scenes this season. Now we have money and unseen producers as the villains.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DRKNLOVELY49 Vera Brown Barnett

No you are not, I enjoyed Ellis I wish they would bring him back

    • Tracy

I agree–Ellis gave you someone to hate. And he was good at it.

  • devlzadvocate

I found Smash uncomfortable to watch in the first season, but after watching the first episode of the 2nd season, thought it immensely better. The most welcome change was Jeremy Jordan. He could just read the ingredients of a can of soup and make it great. Anyway, now I would really hate to see Smash cancelled.

  • Samma

I liked season 1 better than I’m liking season 2. I thought the music overall was better. Season 1 had it’s issues, but people just keep making stupid choices in season 2 and I’m not a huge fan of Jeremy Jordan’s character.

  • http://twitter.com/Merina2 Merina

I’m just so, so heartbroken that this show may be cancelled. It’s the highlight of my week – musical theatre is a huge part of my life (not as a career, but as a rabid hobby) and something I’m always looking for new, affordable ways to experience. The performances and music of Smash simply get better and better; I see it as a high-quality show that had a shaky start, and I wish more people could see it through my eyes!

    • Jasmine

I so agree with you………..the music is incredible as are the performances.

    • http://www.facebook.com/SherryLynn921 Sherry Burns

Re-watching those clips, “(Let’s Start) Tomorrow, Tonight” and especially “I Heard Your Voice In a Dream” reminded me again why so many of us are fighting to keep this on the air! I didn’t think I really liked musicals until I found this show! I love the music of this show SO much! And I LOVE the new music from Hit List! The Bombshell numbers where fun, but Hit Lists’ music is POWERFUL, I just LOVE it! I really hope they give it another chance!

    • http://www.facebook.com/patrik.komljenovic Patrik Komljenović

      I’m with you!

  • potterjay

I love Smash, really hope it isn’t cancelled… BUT, if it was cancelled, I would love them to release ‘Bombshell’ and ‘Hit List’ as shows (maybe on TV rather than actually in the theatre), so that viewers can see the ‘finished piece’ if you like. I keep wondering how it all fits together and where the songs go, and Im still confused about the final plot for Hit List

    • thecamishirt

Ya, dude. I got more from the plot by reading the Wiki than from rewatching the part where Kyle explains it. Maybe they are being deliberately vague about it…

  • Stagegirl12

I absolutely loved the performance of I Heard Your Voice in a Dream. The movement was incredible!

  • http://twitter.com/Scribbler01 Brittanie Ouellette

I hope its not cancelled, I love this show.

  • Elphaba Thropp

If you had asked me last year, I would have been fine with it being cut. Now, for every reason that you mentioned, I really don’t want to see it go!

  • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

It’s missing the heart and real passion that can be found in Glee. It feels too much like a soap opera and not enough of a real life story being told. Glee4Lyfe!

    • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

By the way I LOVED season 1 but couldn’t find anything to hold on to in season 2.

      • http://twitter.com/BilliamSays Bill Anderson

If you loved Season One… Season 2 is SOOOOO much better.

    • TinaK

Please tell me you are joking about Glee. It is terrible now. It used to be one of my favorite shows, but it has lost all direction. My husband and I love Smash and I have stopped recording Glee. The writers should have let the new talent take over and just keep Rachel and Kurt from the old season. Everyone else needs to move on.

    • http://www.facebook.com/nskethway Nathan Skethway

Look I’ve been a Glee fan from the beginning and i still watch it because I’m hooked on the characters. But to say that Glee tells more of a real life story and feels less like a soap opera than Smash is about the most laughable thing ever. They’re both good shows. But Smash is not missing heart and passion. And unlike Glee, it actually has a tiny bit of sense in its storyline.

  • http://twitter.com/HeartHeartsBook Aly

I liked Season better…I don’t mind the addition of the new characters, but my problem is that you expect me to immediately care about them and their problems, when I’m still on “who are you and why am I supposed to care”. I wish they would focus on the main characters from season one more. Also I hate that Karen in not Marilyn. I fell in love with the Marilyn show and now I’m forced to watch Hit List (but it’s starting to grow on me, so meh). I want better music and I want Derek and Karen. I like the eliminations that were made but hate the additions. Every week that I tune in, I leave disappointed and more assured that Smash is going to be cancelled.

  • xoxoKellyLee

As a huge musical theatre geek, I LOVED Smash when it first started. It is so original and it shows us what it’s like behind the scenes of Broadway. I was sad to hear that Smash might be cancelled because it is one of the highlights of my week. Yes, season one was a bit rough, but they’ve really turned it around in season two. Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus are great additions to the show also. I hope that it gets saved! Save the show!

  • Marie

I liked early season 1, but it got weird, and I thought it was obvious to the world that Ivy should’ve been Marilyn. I haven’t watched season 2, but near the end of smash season 1, the only thing I really cared about was the music. And I after listening to these tunes, season 1 music is still better to me (although the guy that plays Sam has an awesome voice). I think the idea of the show was really cool, and the musical numbers were great (most of the time), but the little personal dramas and other plot things just put me off. Hopefully, there can be another show that’ll do some cool musical theater stuff, but with less issues.

  • Liz

I like Smash quite a bit (though I liked S1 much better than S2–I kind of loathe Jimmy’s attitude and dread him being in a scene) but the major problem with it right now is that there’s absolutely no conflict to keep it interesting. The dramaturg shows up—and is gone just as fast, and it turns out he wasn’t even really needed, since they’re going to use an old draft, never mind that it’s the one the critics panned after workshop and ultimately got Ivy fired the first time. They bring in Sean Hayes to play opposite Ivy in Liaisons, and then turn his character into a joke. Not only that, but they somehow manage to make Ivy a special snowflake in the process. There could have been so much drama there and they did nothing with it but make it the butt of a lame joke. Then Karen just, I don’t know, bows out of Bombshell for whatever reason. She could have been fired. That would have been interesting. But no. Everything’s so clean and nice and boring.

  • Chantal

I have never watched this show but thanks to this article I will check it out ASAP. :)

    • Susanna B.

Thank you and hope you love it like we do!!!!

    • sofia in SD

You can download episodes at http://www.nbc.com/smash as well!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1432178793 Abi Lockwood

I definitely prefer season 1 but I think Krysta Rodriguez and Andy Mientus are the best additions this season, and I’m so glad to see Sam back (though I would like more of him).
But there seems to be very little plot and so much unnecessary drama this season. I really dislike Jeremy Jordan’s character (though his voice is amazing) and there’s way too much focus on him and Karen. I’m loving the fact that this season we have even more original songs!

Smash is the only show in this area on TV! Yes people compare it to Glee all the time but Glee is mainly covers done by ‘teenagers’ and is mainly for teenage audiences, whereas Smash is more universal. Yes the show has it’s problems, but the songs are not one and I would hate to see it cancelled.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IUUOXRG53IO6LOJBSY5VPNQ3JU Katherine

No offense to Kat McP who has a lovely voice but she is some of the dead weight IMO. She is just not a strong enough actress to carry her large storyline. And there was way too much focus on the guest stars – if you don’t write well for your main cast, they become just a distraction. That said the Megan Hilty-Bernadette Peters duet the other day was AMAZING.as well as the Krysta flying number. If there were more moments like that, we would have had something. It seems like there were too many cooks behind the scenes and they didn’t know exactly what they wanted to do. I hope they give it another chance too but I am not overly optimistic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/SherryLynn921 Sherry Burns

Krysta’s flying number was AMAZING! I find myself re-watching that over and over again! I downloaded it from itunes also and play it over and over in the car! She was AMAZING and captivating to say the least!! She definitely needs some more numbers, if we can get a next season!

    • Skittles

I disagree, I think she is amazing.

    • red

I love Kat McP, I think she needs more numbers to sing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DRKNLOVELY49 Vera Brown Barnett

I’m sorry but you are wrong Katherine Mcphee is the reason I watch
the show. I’m sad she chose to go to Hit List I really liked her as Marilyn.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/IWBANJEMRHF22KL346CK2OOS3A G

Katharine McPhee is the reason that ALOT of people watch Smash! just go to the Smash facebook page, alot prefer her on Bombshell rather than hilty, go to You Tube & see which song & dance numbers have the most views-Katharine again, & then go to iTunes to see who has the most downloaded Smash songs – Katharine does & Jeremy’s songs (very talented) are catching up with her! so no matter what a few Hilty fans post about Katharine, she deserves her role on Smash!!

  • sarmel

First of all thank you for writing this article. One of the highlights of my week is watching Smash. Hopefully this article will encourage non viewers of Smash to watch the show and let them self form their opinion verses what they are hearing from the media. Season two is so much better than season one and because of this I think many previous viewers gave up during season one and did not return to give season two a chance. My heart pleas that Smash will not crash! There are so many things to love about Smash and hopefully it will continue and grow even better with a promising future season 3 !

  • http://www.facebook.com/john.d.huddy John Dennis Huddy

I applaud your loyalty but otherwise you miss the point. Smash was a terrific new show with a brilliant young star in Katharine McPhee whose “Remember Me” brought the first season to a rousing crescendo. Only NBC, with the most hapless executives in the history of television, could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The second season has been a chaotic disaster. With new producers, Karen has been marginalized and the original Bombshell musical relegated to a sidebar in favor of an arrogant, churlish new character, Jeremy, who is reason enough to tune out but who seems to have become the show’s lead.. Unfocused and disjointed, Smash lunges from one gimmick to another: a Jennifer Hudson concert halts the momentum of season one. Then there’s the dumb, pointless French musical that sent Smash flying off the rails. Then Karen and Derek are shuttled off to a workshop production. What next? Does Karen flee back to Palookaville in tears while Derek gets busted with an underage hooker? Smash, once so promising, is now simply Trash. A shame. I really liked this show. But it’s gone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000056220115 Margaret Reder-Barber

I love the French musical, it brought a lot of comedy to the show. It shows that broadway shows can come and go fast and sometimes misguided. Karen is new to broadway and the writing shows her innocence but nice girl she is. Her and Jimmy make a good couple (Derek seems too old for her) so You have a nice girl and a trouble boy storyline. Will he get straight or wont he? This show has Bombshell to appeal to the older crowd and Hit List to appeal to the 20 to 50 yr olds (I am 49 and love both shows). I like the Second Season better than the first.

    • http://www.facebook.com/DRKNLOVELY49 Vera Brown Barnett

I hope it’s not gone, however, I could not agree with you more!
Well said my friend I’m still shaking my head!

    • http://twitter.com/Jan8Hare delfiteblu

I pretty much agree with everything you say, but that’s not to say that it couldn’t improve in a third season. They need to concentrate on Bombshell and hopefully Gatsby done by Tom and Julia and get rid of the teenybopper stuff they’re using to appeal to younger viewers. I loved Jeremy Jordan before SMASH and THOUGHT I would love him ON SMASH, and other than the last song he sang last Saturday night, I’ve never watched one show where I could stand him. He has a beautiful voice and finally, last weekend, we were allowed to hear it. But if he goes, I’m FINE with that.

  • Alex

More people should be watching Smash. A show with some actual substance instead of all the reality tv garbage the networks keep pushing on us.

  • Mel

Thank you so much for writing this article!! Smash is one of my favorite shows and I look forward to watching it every week! It’s just so, so good – the story is great, the characters are wonderful, and the songs and performances are phenomenal. I’ve seen a lot of live theater, and the Broadway performances on Smash are just as good, if not better, than a lot of shows out there right now. I sincerely hope it doesn’t get cancelled and I hope that this article convinces people to watch it, because it deserves to be seen.

  • Sally R.

I love this show! The talent is amazing and sure the plot line is pretty predictable but look at Glee, which brings me to wonder where all the musical theatre and singing fans are that support Glee. Glee has fantastic talent and Smash is just as good! Nashville is such a success so it must boil down to musical theatre fans not watching. One more thing. Where are all the American Idol fans who voted for Katharine McPhee? Needless to say, I am very disappointed about Smash being canceled.

  • EwSmashEwEw

Are we watching the same show? Bad writing. A complete disregard for reality. Self-conscious I-know-the-camera-is-on-me writing. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

My main gripe is that all of the “drama” rests on stakes that are entirely imaginary. Ad nauseum, we witness decontextualized, rambly backs-and-forth over super mundane issues, like: “We’re cutting this song!” “No we CAN’T!” “This is my best work!” “No it’s NOT!” “This is our ONLY chance for fame!” and it’s all (A) far-fetched, (B) whiny and dumb. A fifth grader could write better dialogue.

Real (well-written) drama means you dramatize compelling, emotional moments that lay in-between — the heart to hearts, the revelations, the tough decisions (and I’m not talking about “GASP! Should I take this Broadway show???”). We need to see people who extend beyond the far-fetched reality of THE THEATUH! But Smash doesn’t even scratch the surface; it barely even tickles it. Everybody is flat. Every character’s motivation is laughably boring: making “Marilyn” happen, and/or getting famous, and/or not ruining their reputations.

Who has two thumbs and thinks Smash sucks? This gal.

    • http://www.facebook.com/craig.diskin.14 Craig Diskin

      u suck u no nothing

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000056220115 Margaret Reder-Barber

You obviously do not know how broadway works and have never been to a broadway show! You sound like you are a 6th grader!

  • http://www.facebook.com/katharine.smith.73 Katharine Smith

I will be so upset if this show gets canceled. It has gotten so good since season one and I love having a theatre-esque show to watch every week. Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty SHINE every week and I would hate to see them thrown away.

  • Kim

I LOVE SMASH. My favorite show and it has certainly gotten much better with everything that you mentioned in this article. I didn’t enjoy Leo or Frank in the story, and I LOVE Hit List and can’t wait to see it progress. I would love for it to become an actual musical, but who knows if that would ever happen. LOVE SMASH!!

  • BroadwayBaby

Jimmy is WATCHABLE?! The character is poorly written and the lack of focus and relatability to him is purely laughable. The actor is doing his best but the character is a joke. No kid about to get on Broadway would be that self entitled, even if he was the most talented songwriter that ever struck a piano key. You don’t root for him, you root for a CGI dinosaur or alien to reduce him to a pile of smarmy pot roast.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000056220115 Margaret Reder-Barber

I think you are totally wrong about Jimmy, He is a troubled soul and totally portrays that. how do you get self entitled out of his acting! remember it is his first broadway he does not know how things work so he is acting and expecting things of how he thinks it works and finds out the hardway it is not as easy as he thinks.

    • Giovanna

As a performing arts teacher I can tell you that you are totally wrong. As sad as it is to say, there are plenty of kids out there that are that entitled and cocky, even when they aren’t as talented as Jeremy Jordan. I agree his character is annoying but at least it is truthful. There are just some people out there that believe they should make it and aren’t grateful at all when they get their chance. I like that the writers included a character like this because it IS true to real life. It may not be the norm but it does happen!

      • http://www.facebook.com/alikhat Ali Khat

While it may be true that people like Jimmy exist out there, that doesn’t mean I want to watch someone that dim-witted, infantile and obnoxious on my TV.

I love Smash and hope it gets a renewal, but I also hope they dump Jimmy as fast as possible. IMHO, they ran down the wrong character with a car.

      • Lory

ALso a teacher in the fine arts, and I agree.

    • Lorenzo Ramsey

I couldn’t agree more. Well said.

  • Wisteria

I watch each episode several times. Yes, the commercials, too! The plots are layered, and so are the characters. The sets, the setting, the songs and the dance numbers are worth seeing over and over. I wish the network and sponsors could find a way to discover how many fans there actually are, meaning the ones recording the show and watching later, or just viewing on-demand. I’ll make Saturday my new TV night!

  • Jasmine

Its so sad to see this show cancelled……seems like we have lost the taste for intelligent music and good drama as more and more people are gearing towards the ever so irritating music of Glee. I hope they continue Smash…..

  • crbarra

I love this show! I hope that by some miracle it isn’t canceled after this season!

  • Vanj203

This is really well said. I love this show for all the reasons you mentioned. I really don’t want Smash to be cancelled, and if it is, no network will invest money, time or attention into a tv show about Broadway productions ever again. That would be a shame.

One note about Ellis: as much as I totally hated him, he was a magnificent villain for stirring up trouble and to focus all the viewers’ disgust on when things didn’t go well. He was usually behind so much of the dirty dealings that caused things to go wrong in “Bombshell.”

  • Megan

I do like Smash. Season 1 was entertaining but shot off in way too many directions, focusing plots on characters that I didn’t care for/about. Like Ellis. I didn’t love to hate him, I just hated him. There was no humanity in there to identify with. One dimensional drivel. And therein lay the problem.

Second season cleaned things up a bit. The characters with depth stayed, for the most part. The original music doesn’t have the same draw for me as the Bombshell tracks do, but they’re catchy. But I think Karen is boring.

No, that’s not it. I think McPhee’s portrayal is boring. It’s like Karen doesn’t exist when the camera isn’t on her, only popping into being for those specific scenes, and then poof! she’s gone again until the next. There are no choices there, at least none that make me wonder where she was coming from. She’s not a full person the way she’s being portrayed.
In contrast, Ivy is. Megan Hilty is fantastic – but honestly, I expected that of her. You don’t get starring roles on Broadway without being able to lay it down and do the work. Especially without having a name to start with (ie Daniel Radcliffe – but, whether his name got him there or not, the guy deserved it. Saw him in How to Succeed…Awesomely talented).

But anyway. There are some other points – I don’t like the character Jimmy, but I think the actor is doing really well with what he’s been given. The show could be really good. It’s getting there. I hope it survives long enough to reach its potential.

  • http://www.facebook.com/craig.diskin.14 Craig Diskin

i love this show pleaase give it a chance its amazing and insightful its brilliant i literaly would cry if it died give it a chance!

  • Joannie

Great show! Love it. Such talent. Not another crime drama or thriller. Please stay around.

  • Nina

There’s still plenty of dead weight to drop. Karen is hardly the special snowflake that everyone treats her as. There’s almost nothing to her, she has virtually no defining characteristics. I think people are justified in complaining about the weak, bland characters, the less than stellar writing and the soap opera drama that bogs down the worthwhile stuff…

Also, this article didn’t mention how expensive the show is to produce, which is the main reason it’s likely to be get cancelled. While those who have stuck with it may still enjoy it it’s just not a good enough show to justify the cost in the face of the ratings.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000056220115 Margaret Reder-Barber

I love Karen and her voice. I believe you are totally wrong Nina.

Fix the writing and Karen’s character but Katharine McPhee is stellar. Nobody has a voice like her and her dancing skills are right there with the professional dancers. The screen might be full of characters but my eyes are drawn to Katharine.

Katharine is the real triple threat! Hilty can’t dance & in 2 episodes ago, they had Kathie Lee on as a distraction because hilty couldn’t do the mambo number

  • Kathy Smith

I so enjoy this show!! I was extremely sad to see it moved to Saturday night knowing what that meant. The talent in this show is unbelievable!! If you enjoy artistic shows it’s definitely worth your time. Also, if you like excellent musical theatre it’s a great date night. Please don’t let this go so quickly before you give your audience time to tune in and see what it’s all about.

  • Smash Fan

I love this show! Jeremy Jordan is amazingly talented!! Although, I’m not a huge fan of Jimmy (except when I hear him sing). I love Katherine McPhee! In this season, I love how they are using the strengths of the singers in the correct places. I personally like Katherine McPhee better than Megan Hilty, but they are two completely different singers. Megan Hilty belongs in Bombshell and Katherine McPhee belongs in Hit List. I also love Jack Davenport! He plays his character so well and is so sexy! I have accepted the fact that Smash will probably be cancelled, but I will still watch and support the amazing people that perform in this show. Thank you to the cast for working so hard and giving us great entertainment every week!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Feltz-Crews/1460042858 Linda Feltz Crews

Totally agree. Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty each bring a different kind of vulnerability to their performances just as there are people of different stripes who come to New York hoping to hit it big.

It truly is fantastic. NBC continues to make terrible decisions with their shows. I’ll miss this one a lot as it goes to Saturday, where TV shows go to die.

It’s killing Glee right now and no one really knows it.

  • G

LEAVE SMASH ALONE…If teens can have GLEE why cant we have smash…Yes it becomes a little dim from now and then, but the great part is waiting to see what great songs will be introduced on the next show. It is not everyday that you get to watch a show that has original music mixed in with a few cover songs. I would rather the show continue on with the BOMBSHELL story line and kill the Hit List…it has created a Cane and Able within the same show. I enjoy Karen and Ivy, and they worked so well together during the first season, maybe it is time for the writers to have them kiss and make up and put the show back on track. We need some more of the familiar from last season instead of each one of us trying to figure out who everyone is and how they will fit in with everyone else. Oh yea, this seasons opening credits…well you can figure out my opinion on that matter. Bring back SMASH instead of smashing it up….

  • http://twitter.com/GizaTheCat L Gaebe

I love Smash! It’s novel concept, incredible cast chemistry and superior acting drew me in……and I only follow a very few shows these days. Nor am I into Broadway musicals, but the producers of Smash got me. They did something right if they got me to watch a primetime soap based on the makings of a Broadway musical. And now it’s on the brink of cancelation? I hope my viewing of Smash a day late on Hulu Plus via my AppleTV box counts in the mind of the NBC bean counters because that’s the way I watch TV now. If Smash is indeed canceled, I’ve got years and years of Star Trek and all it’s iterations to watch on Hulu.

  • MizzyRentheadFansiePhangirl

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS. I love this show so much. It’s the one thing on TV that doesn’t piss me off. I used to be an avid Glee watcher, but lately it’s become so… I don’t know. It’s just become really pointless. Smash on the other hand is so much more. I’m only a teenager but I love everything about this show. It’s probably because of my gigantic obsession with Musicals. Plus this the only show that is related to Broadway and musicals! It’s original and fun to watch. I really don’t want them to cancel this wonderful show! (Also, I’m loving all the guest stars they are bringing in! I nearly fell off my couch when I saw Daphne Rubin Vega and Jesse L. Martin! <3)

  • Zoe

I love love love love this show so much :) I know it’s going to get cancelled, but maybe if the ratings get better? I doubt it, though. Debra Messing is essentially gone and Katharine McPhee cut her hair (OMIGOD I KNOW SO IMPORTANT), but still. Smash.

  • http://twitter.com/Luxlun Jane Gray

I liked Smash last year but they’ve lost me this year. 2 reasons (and they are fickle, as I only liked it not loved it).

My on-demand from fios did a “sneak peek” which was the first hour of the premiere, which I watched. So when the actual premiere came out it was a two hour show that I couldn’t fast forward past the first hour because you can’t fast forward in most on demand because they want you watching the commercials. Strike 1, I certainly don’t like the show enough to rewatch the first hour just to get to the second. Strike 2, I didn’t like the weird Jennifer Hudson character in that first hour (is she a new star? is she an arc? I don’t care I’m bored I’ve moved on).

Maybe I’ll bother to watch the second season whenever it comes out on netflix but its not a show I’m going to bother watching anymore.

  • http://twitter.com/NinjaWhovian Susan Chilkotowsky

I love this show and I’ll be so disappointed if it gets cancelled, the music and dance numbers are always interesting and the story line is great! Although I will admit whenever I have to explain to someone what the show is about I get a face that says; “really? Why would you watch that?” I’ll be extremely sad if it’s gone from air because its something I really enjoy watching!

  • Roberto LN

not disagree more. i want this show to be good but it’s awful. and
katherine mcphee is the worst actress on the planet. and the jimmy
character makes me wish he was the one hit by the bus and not the sweet
gay character they killed off last night. wish it were better, but it’s
    terrible lol

Agree, very underrated show. Unfortunately, it stumbled a bit in Season 2 as well. Although, finally hitting stride.

I love SMASH. I enjoy the plot going behind the scenes to see what goes into making a musical

Despite of what you point out Jimmy is not well liked I cannot stand this character nor I like how stupid Karen have become and all she has given up for this fool . People wanted Derek and Karen together I did , they screwing that up too . I stopped watching the show cause of Jimmy many of my friends did too we used to watch and share on first season , we bought the music you name it we were so pumped then Jimmy so I was turned off and if you look at the facebook page of the show the comments for many weeks people were saying the same thing so they killed Kyle the one that people tolerated more go figure

  • http://www.facebook.com/niclim1812 Nic Lim

I love Smash for daring to be original, instead of going along with the formulaic karaoke of whatever’s trending and popular and disguising that as entertainment. Seriously if I wanna watch wannabes belt out top 40s covers, I’d stuck to American Idol. At least they do away with the pretense of having a storyline.

So many golden moments in both season 1 and 2. Megan Hilty’s (rightfully!) rendition of Don’t Forget Me brought happy tears to my eyes. It’s been so long since a TV show has captured my heart in that way.

For once there is something that gives to the whole world a peek of Broadway and they want to take it away?! Don’t cancel SMASH!! https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Sharon

I love this show and have seen every episode. I love Broadway shows. The way the show is developing and showing acts from each of its shows, it makes you wish there really was Bombshell and Hit List to see full length in the theater or on TV.

  • Chris

I love this show! i will be heartbroken if its cancelled! I think Bombshell and Hit List should be made into actual musicals they are so good! SAVE SMASH!

  • celia

I’m usually working when Smash comes on, but I never miss an episode by watching it on hulu when I have some free time!! I have almost all the music, I relate to the characters, and know just about everything that goes on. I know there is an effort going on to stop it from being cancelled. But all we can do is hope and pray. And I pray I get to see this show for many more seasons to come!!

  • Ana Borges

It is by far my favourite show. So sad it may be canceled… It not only made me remember how much I enjoy the theatre but made me interested in learning about more musicals. Do you remember the mistake it was to cancel Firefly and Flashforward? Yeah another one to the list of big mistakes if canceled.

  • elphaba

I LOVE SMASH. It’s so GOOD. I adore musical theater, and it’s just like the musical theater is coming to you. And, the music is amazing! The original songs, the performances. Goodness~!

  • Joyce Dillon

I agree with the comment from Merina – being a very big fan of broadway and having the great pleasure of having friends in the industry, this is by far what theater lovers would want to see on television. There are enough reality shows, talent shows, cooking shows and talk shows to last a lifetime. Can’t we just have something beautiful and artistic on television. Please don’t cancel this wonderful show. I wait all week for it. Have watched it many times over and over either on my Ipad, from On Demand, iPOD, etc. Please keep it alve,

  • Susanna B.

I adore SMASH! This show makes me smile and gives me a peek into a world that I always loved. Please give it more time as during some dark days SMASH is a show that always brings me back, even sad moments like the recent episode, give me hope.

Don’t break my heart by stealing away one of the few shows on that make me want to watch TV.

  • Sofia in SD

I am so sick of the pseudo-reality shows! Smash fulfills fantasy, dreams, and the desire to make and witness great music. NBC should try to encourage Smash fans instead of continually sniffing for greener pastures, that is one of the reasons I gave up on the Today show.
COME ON NBC! Don’t kill off one of the few worthwhile shows on, hang in there for us and we will hang in there for you!!!!!!! Smash is fabulous!

  • amanda

I absolutely love all the changes they made this season! I watched season one of smash but there year I cant wait for Saturday night when its on. I love the addition of the new Hit List cast and I love the realtionship between Jimmy and Karen! Everyone on the show is incredibly talented and I love tuning in every week to get a peek inside Broadeay and New York! I hope NBC reads this article and guve Smash a third season! If you have facebook check out the page Dont Cancel Smash. There are over 20,000 members and Smash just win E! Online Save One Show contest.

This is a great show and if it’s cancelled. I really hope a cable network picks it up. I’ll watch whatever day they put it on. The music is great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sue.savoia.blei.cooper Susan Cooper
  • Senia

I agree. The show keeps getting better and better. The music is fabulous and the story is developing and has me hooked. NBC has played with the time slot so much that most people don’t know when it’s on. Hope it continues.

  • Leslie

I personally don’t understand why more people aren’t watching SMASH.
But, I think NBC made the huge mistake of waiting until Feb. to start season 2.
I love love love the show!! And I will be very disapointed if it is cancelled.
One thing I think SMASH needs is more songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman!
I enjoy the music Bombshell, so much more than the music from Hit List.

  • Sofia in SD

So many fans dvr/view online/On Demand, especially since they changed time slots.

Everyone please go to the Smash website ( http://www.nbc.com/smash ) and download and watch an episode as often as possible!!!
The NBC downloads are something that shows a count to the network and would be another great way to show them people care.

  • ann

thank you for writing this!! I so agree with you. Its a great show, with faults, but what show hasnt!! It showcases some amazing talent (Jerermy Jordan in particular is fanstastic, in spite of the less than lovely character). I really hope it gets renewed.

Love this show, it did have trouble in the beginning but it has been working things out. I feel it didn’t get a fair shake being moved to Saturday night “the death slot”. MANY hows have taken a few seasons to take off and lasted many many years. I hope SMASH will be one of them, if not I will truly miss it.

  • Kim Robert

Great article about my favorite show!

  • Christine

Pls save Smash! I just love the show, the songs and Cartwills!

  • Jo

It’s actually ridiculous that this show is even being considered for being cancelled! I love this show, it’s a mature way to enjoy a musical theater show, the only other show is Glee, and that is for a COMPLETELY different audience, granted you get crossovers but this show is so different in itself, I hate that people presume it is like Glee and automatically write it off. I don’t know about anyone else, but I actually loved the start of Smash and never thought there was anything wrong with it XD but still this is one of my favourite shows, and you just can’t deny the musical talent in it, or the music itself. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL SMASH!!

  • lmarotte

Please keep Smash on, there are so many Reality Shows on that are just nonsense, and we do not need any more Medical, Police, or Forensic dramas, we have enough. I look for shows that entertain, and SMASH does it! I look for shows with Quality and Talent, SMASH has it. SMASH HAS IT ALL…..Please please do not cancel SMASH!!

  • Diana510

I have loved this show from the first episode and watch faithfully every week. I was heartbroken when they eliminated Kyle last week because I think he had an essential contribution to the cast. So many of my favorite shows have been abruptly cancelled over the past several years that I fear there will soon be no programming for those of us who are discerning viewers; people with taste who appreciate quality which is so often lacking in most programs.

  • Kathleen

I agree with Merina. I love SMASH! I have always loved musicals…this gives me a dose of one each week. I am proud of the show and all it has been through. I watch it every week…no matter what day it is on. I record it every week, just in case I can’t be home in time to watch it at its new time slot. I hope it survives!!! I am one of the faithful SMASHERS…
i follow the Facebook page devoted to saving SMASH https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Rosemarie

I watch Smash faithfully and have followed it over to its new time slot. It’s one of the best shows on tv. I agree with Merina below it gets better with every episode. On FB they had a survey of what show should be saved and Smash was far above the rest with over 60% of the votes. Listen to the people and keep this show on the air!

  • Yo!

I love smash but to be honest those aren’t really the reasons, I’m not “charmed” by Jimmy at all! But the truth is, it’s impossible to explain why you love the show so much (aside the incredible talent and great plot ;D)! It’s like if the writters know exactly what we like!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lorielle-Sisson/1489985926 Lorielle Sisson

This show is a bright spot among the repetitive reality shows, crime shows and “guy comedy” shows. Where Glee’s demo is the younger viewer (even if older viewers watch – plot lines are pretty much about the young characters) – SMASH, I believe, has a broader demo. Personally, I think that the Broadway community should get behind this show and promote the hell out of it. NBC has not done right by this series – they haven’t promoted it well this year and when it switched nights…..who knew? I found out 2 weeks later that it had moved and was airing original shows. Perhaps Saturday night need not be a wasteland for original tv anymore – where is the competition? If NBC would promote it – who knows what could happen? Remember the years of The Love Boat and Fantasy Island on Saturdays? SAVE SMASH!!!!! (https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash)

  • Darryl

I have been a big fan from the beginning> This season took too long in creating new storylines but now I am hooked again. Please don’t cancel SMASH!

  • BarbBoogie

I love SMASH! Please don’t cancel it. It is quality TV…much better than all those reality shows they keep forcing on us. SMASH is like GLEE for adults!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sbmayo Susan Barry Mayo

I didn’t even have to finish reading this article to know how I feel about this show!! SMASH is the BEST! I may be a bit predjudiced because I am a former actress and talent agent so I know the ins and outs of the world SMASH inhabits. I LOVE everything they have been doing, especially these past few weeks. They have finally gotten the show back on the right track by focusing on BOMBSHELL and Hit List!!! They didn’t need the other subplots of infidelity etc that ALL the other shows have!! Last Saturday’s show was maybe the best of the season so far. I laughed, I cried….DON’T CANCEL SMASH!!!!!!!

I am 70 and LOVE SMASH. I will never get to Broadway to see a show, but we are so fortunate that Broadway comes into our home every week. The Cast and everyone else involved (the suits) with this show is to be commended, on their dedication to makeing this show reflect the true sights and sounds and character of Broadway. My life has been enriched so much and this show has brought me such joy on those dismal Saturday nights. Please don’t cancel SMASH!

  • Cecilly

Smash is a fantastic show. As someone who’s been directly and indirectly involved in musical theatre on a local level, it’s been fascinating to get a birds eye view of all that goes in to a Broadway production. I’ve learned so much from Smash and wait eagerly for each new episode, often watching old ones a few times over. This show is original, innovative, and worthy of renewal. I hope NBC has been listening to the fans of Smash lately, and doesn’t make the mistake of canceling it.

  • LoraMuse

We LOVE Smash! I watch it with my daughters and I reallllllllly hope they renew it! https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Marilyn

Many hit shows have a slow start. People my age will remember how bad Happy Days was in it’s first year. A great show evolves and that is exactly what Smash has done this year. The characters are compelling, the acting excellent and the music stellar.

  • Bealion

this show is an absolute gem and should be renewed for another season. it gives the audience a way to connect with New York and the theatre environment that most of us would not get the chance to experience otherwise. Please be aware of the movement on Facebook ((https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash)) and if this is any indication as to what America wants, please renew Smash and give it a proper time slot. We’ll be watching!

  • Peggy

I LOVE the show! It has had ups and downs, but I’ve been there through it all and will continue to anticipate and appreciate every episode. The characters, the music, and all the beautiful lyrics have totally entertained and moved me.

Smash is one of the best things that has happened to TV in a while. Love the fact that I’m getting to watch a broadway show every week for free. It has exposed people, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to music, dance and theater. I love Smash and hope it will get to stay on the air. Smash has a lot of people who want to see it continue. Check out this FB page https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

More people should definitely watch this show!! Smash and it’s cast is fantastic! Finally, an great original show which NBC desperately needs, It’s the only show worth watching on this network, with the exception of The Voice!! DON’T CANCEL IT!!!

  • Marc

I TOTALLY agree with the writer. This show is AMAZING. It’s one of the best out there. I do think that every show has it’s lower point, where ratings are a bit low and disappointing, but you have to leave the show another chance! There’s a reason why this author wrote about the show, a reason why they decided to make a second season! Why not a third one? Let’s show everyone how this show was epic by letting the story flows and fix what’s wrong, just how they did for season 1.

  • Millicent

  • http://www.facebook.com/Interpreterguy Robert W. Gerbing

I agree with everything this article says about the show. I feel the network made a big error in the beginning of the second season waiting to start it again in January. It should have been picked up quicker during the regular season and not been a mid-season replacement for it’s second season. It may have lost ground because of that action.

If the show is to continue they already killed off one important character. The character Kyle Bishop (Andy Meintus) was killed off far too quickly. This character was endearing and people loved him on the show. The actor playing him brought heart to the show once again in this naive new character that had more potential for growth than some other characters that are still on the show.

However, with that said, the death of this character also may have been the catalysis to bring another character into a developmental growth spurt and finally get past his narcissistic, selfish, and adolescent beginnings. I am talking about the character Jimmy Collins, played by the wonderfully talented Jeremy Jordan. This event, although heartbreaking to those who loved the Kyle character, could have been a huge turning point for the show if allowed to move on. They have set up a situation that could move all of the characters into a new path of development because of how they will react to this loss. It would be unfortunate if this were not allowed to play out to its fullest to beenfit the show and the development of characters that need to take place.

  • Tracy

Love this show! It HAS to be renewed!

  • Sspowdra

I have loved every minute of SMASH! This show has grown each episode like watching a child grow and mature. The music has always been amazing! The gifted singers cannot be denied. The characters are evolving every week and we start to see not only their desires, but more importantly their hearts. Every episode I look forward to the evolution of this great show. Please…please…please keep SMASH! We want more!

  • BK

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show!!! I may not agree with everything in this article, but I’m glad it was written……Thank You.

  • Beth

I love this show and look forward to it every week,I actually wish it was longer than just 1hr. I hope they keep it,we have too many mystery shows. It’s time to cater to shows that make people feel good about!

  • http://twitter.com/SGKlsnr Susan Klausner

This is the best, most entertaining show on tv. It would really be a shame if they cancelled it. The talent is unbelievable, and the story lines have matured as the series has progressed. The original music is fantastic and I watch the musical numbers over and over again. It’s sad when a show like this isn’t given a chance.

  • Sammy Sosa

“Smash” is the first new show in a looooong time that has potential. I really enjoy watching it! I hope it is not cancelled. I don’t watch much TV anymore because there is not much worth watching. I hope “Smash” stays!

  • Fjc0917

I love this show. It is good quality TV which some of the networks seem to be lacking these days. I’m tired of all the reality shows, enough is enough. Keep SMASH on for the viewers who actually have a brain in their head!

  • Bari

This show is incredible and I agree that there’s nothing like it on TV. I’m happy to see the tide turning (somewhat) towards more artsy shows instead of the awful reality TV that adds nothing of quality or substance to our culture. I’m afraid, after a couple of the changes that they made on last week’s episode though, that they really are wrapping things up. I was just thinking that they have done a great job keeping the storyline moving forward because I was wondering how long they could keep it going just around Bombshell. Fingers cross this gem doesn’t disappear.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alisha.bellburden Alisha Bell-Burden

I think SMASH is great and looked forward to watching every week. When it moved to Saturday, I was shocked. It is much harder to keep any audience even a loyal one when it is on Saturday night. I try to watch it at the broadcasted time but sometimes I have to watch it after the fact, now since it is on Saturdays. Smash is something that needs to stay on TV if the show has the backup by sponsors.

  • Smashfan

I love everything about this show. I think the time slot it’s in is killing it. Put this show after similar shows, like the voice or DWTS. I am going to be heartbroken if this show is cancelled. I think the characters are fantastic, Katherine and Megan are crazy talented and it’s NOT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE ON TV!!!! Which is exactly why it shouldn’t be cancelled.

I always wait anxiously for the next episode. For me, each episode is never long enough. I was brought to tears by Jimmy’s character singing his tribute to Kyle. Simply amazing. Please, do not cancel this show. There is NOTHING on TV like it…. a breath of fresh air among the so-called Reality Shows.

  • Karen

I look forward to watching Smash week after week. I love the music and the storylines of the two musicals. They’ve laid the groundwork for The Great Gatsby and to move Hit List to Broadway so there is future storylines to expand on. Please don’t cancel SMASH!!! I agree that this is a musical show for adults and not high school kids like Glee (which I’ve never had any interest in watching).

  • Wendy

I’d hate to see this show end. It’s one of the best shows to happen in a long time. In recent years I’ve been rather bored with television. Reality TV seems to have taken over. Enough of that. Smash is true entertainment. It deserves at least a third season, if not more.

  • twansmg

Smash is my favorite show on television right now and I find it hard to believe a show that is this good is likely to be cancelled. I really love everything about the show. I was a huge fan of Kat’s while she was on idol and I think she does an amazing job in the show. I think this season has actually been better than the first because of some of the new characters and I don’t find Jeremy’s character as unlikable as a lot of people do. I really hope somehow this show is able to continue because I think it really does bring something new and fresh to the table. Awesome article btw :)

Love this show! https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash Best show on television! We need a show like SMASH! Music makes the world go round!

  • http://www.facebook.com/julie.nash.90 Julie Nash

Love it. It’s not a musical show where people spontaneiously burst into song in situations that no one would sing in. The music is part of the theatre.

  • Giovanna

I love this show and really don’t want to see it go! I’m not one that usually reposts things or gets involved in annoying campaigns but this show is worth it and the people fighting for it are amazing. So if you love Smash and you want to fight to keep it around like I do, please go to https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash and like the page. They are always posting ways to fight for the show! Let’s save Smash!

I love SMASH because it is a glitzy and dramatic version of life in musical theatre. Glitz and drama set to music is what draws us to Broadway and beyond. Yes it has been a wild ride of characters and storylines…some we love, some we hate, some we don’t really notice. But that’s life- and SMASH is art imitating life imitating art. So, if you’re a fan join the Facebook crusade on page called: Don’t Cancel Smash

I’m from Slovenia so Smash isn’t just in Amarica and i have written even my own script of Bombshell. I love Broadway and this show is showing me what is actully happening on the stage and behind it and that’s why i love it so much!

  • Lori P

I love SMASH because of it’s plethora of talented cast members and creative team. The music is phenomenal! The story line is fascinating! I wait with bated breath each week for the next installment of our beloved show. I watch each episode several times during the week, just getting psyched for the new episode. I play the music on my phone, in my car and at home because it is like a transfusion to my soul.

Please, Please, Please DON’T CANCEL SMASH!

Even with all of its flaws, SMASH is still one of the better shows on TV today. If it remains true to its Broadway inspirations, it could develop and grow a loyal fan base. There are loads of musical theater junkies out there in TV land! I hope SMASH survives!

  • Jennifer

Smash deserves another season … and a better time-slot. Saturday night will be its death sentence. The networks are saturated with reality tv shows. It’s nauseating. Finally, a show like Smash comes along, with a fresh new concept, great writing, and truly talented actors. We, as viewers, need to remember that tv shows are meant to entertain, inspire, and move us. Smash accomplishes of three.

I am 100% on Board with SMASH! I love love love it!!! I will be really sad if it goes! It is the only show that I watch each week along with Doctor Who! That is it! Please don’t take it away!:D

  • Katie

I’m pretty sure someone said this already, but thank you for writing this article. I love “Smash” and I hate to think that this show might not be renewed. It’s the only show out there that really revolves around Broadway and I think that it has such great potential if NBC gives it a chance. For all of you that complain about Jeremy Jordan’s character ‘Jimmy Collins’, he isn’t suppose to be all warm and fuzzy, he has a dark past and that obliviously influences his personality and behavior. Besides, he brings conflict to the show, which if there was no conflict, then “Smash” wouldn’t be a very realistic or interesting show. Nevertheless, whether you like the character ‘Jimmy Collins’ or not, Jeremy Jordan does a great job of portraying him, and if you’ve been keeping up this season, he also has the potential to become a more likeable character.

  • C McNany

I absolutely LOVE this show. I am hoping it gets another chance. It is truly one of a kind!!

  • Sandpile

I love this show. Broadway in my living room every week. Watching them again on demand. I am sick of cop dramas and reality shows. These people sing, dance and act their way into my heart each week. I hope they are given another season, more publicity and a chance entertain us.

  • Philip

My wife and I enjoy music. SMASH is one place where we can hear very high quality performances by very talented singers.Personal dramas must be a part of the show but they are being handled well and the focus is remaining on the music. SMASH is a great show and I hope NBC will listen to the fans and keep it. They listened back in the 60′s and kept Star Trek for another season. Keep up the great work SMASH team.

  • Jmeisch

I loved this article and agreed with everything in it. I will be so bummed if they cancel! The storyline with Hit List, added characters and more edgy music brings the best of both worlds to this show and the actors are phenomenal. There is no show like it with adult content. I don’t have conventional TV service and watch on HuluPlus every week. I know plenty of people that are fans who watch it there or DVR and those really aren’t counted in their numbers. Check out how many devoted fans this show has and join us at http://www.facebook.com/dontcancelsmash
Here’s hoping for another full season!

  • SMASH-ette

One of the most unique television shows ever created. I can’t think of one that even comes close,
before or since. Like the article stated,
“Smash” gives viewers an opportunity to get a glimpse into the world
of theatre and its offerings, where only a few can afford to see musicals and
plays on Broadway or at your local performing arts center. There are way too many reality shows and
crime dramas. For once there is a completely
different television show that’s exquisitely written and extremely well-acted.

It usually makes me cry . The musical numbers are so great !

  • Skittles

I love Smash, and while it was a little disappointing at the beginning of season 2, it has become so good. This is the show I look forward to every week, and will be so sad if NBC cancels it. Its as close to Broadway as I can get right now. Smash deserves a season 3, and a chance. Give Smash a decent time slot and leave it there, promote it, don’t wait so long between seasons, and please stop the play a couple episodes then nothing for weeks, this is death to so many shows anymore. Save Smash NBC!

Loved the article. This show is so often characterized solely by its “love-to-hate-it” legend, which is SO unfair to the majority of this season!

  • HonestC

I live in a beautiful, but very rural, area of Kentucky. I cannot just hop in a taxi and head over to Broadway to be mesmerized by a Broadway show. Finally, a television company realized there are adults out there who are tired of “reality” and medical/law shows and want real entertainment. And that oasis in the desert of modern programming is Smash.

Since it first began, Smash has been one of my favorite shows. The casting is absolutely brilliant. Their talent is undeniably some of the best America has to offer. The writing is superb. However, NBC seems to have an agenda of their own as there has been little to no advertising this season, AND, there is the major problem of NBC switching days and times on its viewers. If you didn’t have it scheduled on the DVR (like most of us do), then you would miss out on episodes until figuring out it had been moved. I know I kept wondering when it was going to come back on the air only to find out I had 2 new shows on the DVR which I had never seen before!

It would be a real travesty if Smash is not renewed. If NBC isn’t paying attention to the Smash fans, they should. Just the fact as to how many people rallied to the Facebook site of Don’t Cancel Smash (https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash) to vote Smash to the top of the E! poll to save the show shows the support of Smash is there. I hope NBC is listening. Smash, and its fans, are worth their time to listen.

  • Tamara Deems

I have loved every minute of SMASH. Today there is an abundance of trashy shows, detective plots and reality TV flooding the airwaves. SMASH is a shining star for those of us who search for real plot, content, great acting, directing and the best writing I have seen in many years. TV needs SMASH. Television can be so much more than just a way to pass time. It can be Art. SMASH fulfills this promise and I hope it can stay for at least one more season.

  • MusicLover

Smash is amazing! You don’t have to be a genius to appreciate the immense talent that these actors have but if that isn’t enough for you, just listen to the music alone. It is definitely broadway quality music. I understand that music isn’t everyone’s thing but for those that do appreciate and love music, this show is everything to them. Please don’t take it away.

  • Carmen Hernandez

Please reconsider, Smash has good bones and the possibilities are endless. The music especially with Hit List is fresh and current, while Bombshell is classic, a perfect combination of both.
I re-watch at least one episode per day, not that I don’t have anything to do, but simply because they make me happy.

  • Murphi

Love “Smash” and have from the beginning. It’s best chance at an audience with a true interest is the people who work in theater – and are usually working on the nights it has aired. Saturday night? Hello!!!! What show is not up on Saturday night?
It will be very sad to see the show go, it is fresh, interesting and entertaining!! Canceling it will be a truly sad day in television. God willing the show will continue…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Feltz-Crews/1460042858 Linda Feltz Crews

I’m not giving up on Smash until NBC says it’s done. Saturday may seem like the desert to some viewers, but Saturday nights gave us some of the biggest TV hits of all time: All in the Family, Gunsmoke, Golden Girls, The Love Boat, The Bob Newhart Show, Mary Tyler Moore to name some. In this age of technology the day of the week it airs is not that important – but it needs to air.

  • LotsofLs

Smash should be saved! Period. The End. I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, so I am going to share mine here. This show is packed with amazing talent, great music, and a cast with awesome chemistry! No show out there like it! I find myself wishing a whole week could pass the minute the credits are rolling on the current weeks episode just so I could find out what is going to happen next. I agree that some of the audience gave up too soon and some never found the show to begin with..all a shame in my book, but this can change. I hope NBC will give the show another chance and some non-viewers will tune in to see the magic of this show. The show is good for the reasons listed in the above article and for many other reasons. I think it touches people in so many ways. Everyone takes a little something different from it and I personally think it keeps getting better and better. You can’t disregard the “buzz talk” among the current viewers. On every forum available to us, there is discussion about smash. Even the claimed “haters” of the show keep writing in…they just can’t seem to help themselves. That is the power of this show. Everyone has their idea of who they want Karen with, who is the better Marilyn, who hates Jimmy, who loves Jimmy, is Derek a sleaze or a nice guy. If we all got what we wanted all season it would be boring. Smash has done a good job creating change…triangles, obstacles, villians, competition, conflict, etc. At times you want to strangle a character or two..you’re supposed to!… but at the same they still give you a glimpse of what you want so you keep watching to see what will happen. Credit must be given to the amazing actors on this show for playing their characters brilliantly, especially Jeremy Jordan who plays troubled Jimmy, the guy we love to hate or just hate or just love….it’s a beautiful thing! Bottom line, smash is like no other! Talented actors, and VOICES, VOICES, VOICES! The music alone is reason to watch. To those non-believers, be open to the changes, because soon enough there will be more new changes…Bombshell”, “Hit List”..whatever the musical, will run its course and then there will be a new musical that Smash will take us along for the journey. To the non-watchers..give it a try! I dare you not to fall in love with this show and its music!

SMASH is refreshing. It doesn’t have the murders, rapes, crime intensity that seems to be everywhere on TV. It’s a good show to let the kids watch, for the most part. Having grown up in theatre, it’s a MUST watch. I have all episodes saved on my DVR as I can watch them over and over…and I do. To cancel SMASH would be caving into the drama driven society we live in. This is very close to what happens behind the scenes. Not exactly, but close. There is so much more and it is so enticing to watch every week to see what new original songs are going to be revealed. I hope Kyle somehow stays in the show, like a voice hanging over Jimmy’s shoulder or a encouraging word to Tom, etc. Please do not cancel SMASH. We finally have a family show!!! I think word just hasn’t gotten out on this show and people would love it if they saw it. https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Jennifer

I just re-watched all of the performances above. I <3 this show so much and I really hope that it does not cancel. To have Broadway quality performances brought into my home every week is a treat.

  • BottledGinger

I am absolutely devastated that this show may be dropped. It has really come into it’s own. I agree that the show now is 100% improved from where it was first season, but frankly even then it had far better and more consistent writing that many more famous and longer lasting shows on much larger networks (Vampire Diaries springs to mind as a prime example of poop on screen that has unfortunately stuck around.)

My point is that Smash is brilliantly executed and has much more to give before it gets anywhere near hitting it’s shelf life. It’s one of the best pieces of writing on television with some of the most talented people, here’s looking at you Megan Hilty. Losing it now would be the loss of one of the greatest gems of the Silver Screen. Have we learned nothing from Firefly? Don’t cancel something we all know is great. It just needs better representation. Since it’s first premiere last year Smash hasn’t had a decent advertising campaign at all, and it’s not nearly as accessible as certain other tv musicals. The songs only become available on itunes weeks, sometimes months (sometimes not at all) after their corresponding episodes air. And ads in magazines, tv guides, internet and on television are few and far between. What’s killing this show isn’t the show, its the under representation. If no one knows it exists or what it is, they won’t watch it. If the network were to keep this show and fiercely promote it it could be the next Glee. It has the quality to even surpass it.

Loyal fans are trying SOO hard to save this show! There are no other shows of this caliber and canceling it would leave a huge void in TV viewing. NBC are you lisitening?!

  • Lisa R

Please don’t cancel Smash! My family and I have watched it since the beginning, it is an amazing show, with truly talented performers, it would be heartbreaking for it to be canceled!!!! Since it has been switched to Saturday nights, I make sure to be home to watch, then usually re-watch again and again. It would be a shame to end this spectacular show!

  • BB

If this show gets cancelled it will be a crying shame! It is one of the most original on tv today and a refreshing change from “reality” (and I use the term loosely) tv that this country has for whatever reason become addicted to. It is entertaining, upbeat and refreshing! I am however still unsure why NBC has allowed for weeks now to be advertised incorrectly in TV Guide magazine….it is shown to come on at 8p.m. ever since it moved, but it comes on at 7p.m (Central). Maybe that is why the number of viewers is off…Personally, I liked it better on Tuesdays since there is nothing on that night, but Saturdays are fine as well for the same reason. I hope NBC saves this show and stops catering solely to the almighty dollar. Whatever happened to acts of “goodwill” that companies used to extend to their customers?

  • jackrich

This show is one of only two appointment TV shows that I have committed to. I do have a DVR backup just in case I’m not home Saturday evenings. To pull this show would be such a bummer. Since I’ve haven’t seen anything else on NBC entertaining this season. If this show goes off the air I probably won’t check in to see what they have to offer next season

  • Gabrielle

I can’t speak for everyone else, but I NEVER thought the show was anything less than spectacular. This show was and is something I look forward to every week. It actually gave me a better appreciation of Marilyn Monroe and showed me a different side of her. And the drama of “who get’s to be the star” kept me on edge the whole first season. (I watched that last episode at least 4 times).

I have to admit, I wasn’t liking season 2 as much as the first, until they mentioned Gatsby. And now I’m back on board!! I really hope they follow through.

Please save this show! It’s the best thing I’ve seen on television since Desperate Housewives!!

  • Tera

Dont Cancel Smash…My Favorite Show Ever!!!

  • Cindy Campione

I’m one of those people who love musical theatre, and who appreciate people who can really sing – and don’t have to have 168 layers of production and auto tuning to sound good. Smash gives me what I need in television entertainment. I don’t watch tv for reality – I watch it to be entertained, taken away into another place. Give me Smash over the stupid housewives or any contest show. I’ll watch Smash and shows like it over and over again – and I’ll support the advertisers who support the shows. There – that’s it in a nutshell.

  • Paula

I love Smash not because it’s a perfect shw- it’s far from it- but because it’s the only show trying to show the Broadway process and all that we love about musical theater. Yes it’s flawed, but I want to see it grow and continue seeing more of the musical numbers that I love. We need Smash to survive just like w
    e need Broadway to survive..

  • TMS

Smash is by far the best show on TV today. I love it for the caliber of entertainment that comes through every week. It’s like watching a Broadway production in each show, and I truly hope it will not be cancelled!!!!

  • Lorenzo Ramsey

Why is Smash losing ratings? Jeremy Jordan. The character is unlikable and the pairing with Katharine McPhee feels forced. I love Andy’s character and was sad to see him go. I was intrigued at the possibility of a more substantive pairing with Tom. Lots of people I know who loved Smash stopped watching it because of all the screen time Jeremy Jordan gets. His character is a drug addicted, abusive, arrogant ass. What’s to like? And why do we want him with our heroine? It defies logic and it is hurting the show. I want Smash to survive but the eliminated one group of problems and bought another one and placed him front and center.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rick.provenzano Rick Provenzano

The show deserves another try. A third season is needed.

  • Robin

This is the best show on TV hands down my favorite. What you said about listening to the issues the audience has with the show is spot on and it what I am staring to dislike glee. It is not listening to it’s fans and putting mediocre talent in place of legitimate stars. GO SMASH!

  • Donna

    Can’t get enough of SMASH!

  • http://www.facebook.com/elaine.corriero Elaine Corriero

Smash is a wonderful show that deserves more time to grow. There truly is so much garbage on TV (Honey Boo Boo, anyone?) that it’s a refreshing change to sit down and watch quality, original programming on a weekly basis. I have watched every episode more than once (and season one was watched over and over in our house during the off-season while waiting for season 2 to start). The music is fantastic, the cast is amazing and talented and the two broadway shows within a show are musicals I wish I could see on stage someday.
PLease NBC, don’t cancel Smash – give it another chance.

This is so true I watched season one over and over, until season two

I hate this show may get canceled, Its just not right. I live for this show, I never understood why they had to change anything I was always shocked and on the edge of my seat. NBC really didn’t it much of a chance, They don’t promo it hafe as well as the did Grimm and that show is so boreing. I know for a fact that if its canceled I won’t be watching that network again because they have such horrible shows on it. Until smash I never watched NBC. Thank you so much for wrighting this actical I hope it makes a difference.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cathy.atterman Cathy Atterman

The quality of these stars are like no other on TV and it is like watching a Broadway play each week and entering into the lives of each character. The music and performances are outstanding and bring joy each week from our daily lives. Frankly it is wonderful to have something of substance to watch other than all the reality shows which get boring quickly. I hope somehow it does not get canceled. I applaud all of the people on the show!

  • murf-e

It is so sad that endless talk shows, judges, and mindless, manipulated “Reality” shows just keep reproducing like zombie rabbits. Meanwhile a show like SMASH that gives those of us with an appetite for something other than cat-fighting housewives, paternity tests and scheming “tribes” getting voted off an island gets tossed around time slots and way too long between seasons to attract any new demographics! Thank you Mr. Spielberg for producing a TV show like SMASH. If it does not survive, at least I had 2 years of something on television that gave me hope.

  • Vic

Smash is the american iconic reality – Broadway is starting with a dream, having the passion and drive to make it happen and never giving up to get to the next level. How much more do you want? It offers beauty, talent, character and complicated relationships instead of trashy forced reality TV. Save Smash for all these reasons and more!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tglyf Marilyn Senecal Cavanaugh

“SMASH” is a series with heart, character development, great new music and empathy! It is not killing, visual effects and the sit on the edge of your seat adrenaline rush audiences have been groomed to expect.

“Smash” is not fantasy, creatures from other realms and totally fictional plots with awesome special effects.

What “Smash” is, is a real life experience, full of character development, real life scenarios, wonderful new music and the ability of it’s writers to call forth an empathy within us! It is about people that are real! It is filled with a cast that knows how to act and draw us in with their real life struggles in their journey to find their way through life. IT IS ALL ABOUT HEART!

Smash is my favorite show on TV. I adore the music, acting, characters – just everything about it – and really really hope NBC keeps this show for us. Join the Save Smash campaign on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Brian

I love SMASH, but if there is so much support for it why aren’t more people waching it especially when they know it is in trouble? I agree the show deserves another shot and has such amazing music and talent..it will take a Miracle for NBC to renew it…look at what they did to Harry’s Law , and that brought them 8 -10 million viewers every week!

But i still hope the finale rises high enough to get a renewal out of the last place Network!

  • Virginia Chapman

I love live musical theatre, and frankly can’t afford to attend live performances. The way life is today, tuning in to “Smash” becomes an opportunity to escape from everyday woes. The characters are developing nicely and the music keeps getting better and better not to mention the amazing delivery from the very talented cast. There is so much more to see. I was not happy when the character Kyle was killed off this week, because he represented a certain calmness that none of the other characters have in their personalities. The naïve, up and coming, hopeful Broadway personality, pretty much representing millions of people who have gone to New York to make it on the stage. But they killed him off. The choreography presented in the ” Hit LIst” musical numbers, really fantastic. The guests they have brought on have been pretty great too, LIza Minelli and Berndadette Peters are just 2 examples of powerhouse Broadway greats. I can’t say how much more I like the show. It has a lot of class and frankly it wouldn’t hurt people to see a show without blood and guts and every other word that comes out of characters mouths is an F word. It’s refreshing to watch. I followed it to Sat night but I also watch the same episode throughout the week to enjoy the musical numbers. Please don’t cancel the show, it is so worth keeping.

  • Tina

I love Smash! I’m actually not a big fan of Jimmy, even though I love Jeremy’s talent. I agree things have been shaky and the show has taken a bit to settle in, but it has so much promise and potential. It is one of the few shows I watch and that I find worth watching. It is also the only thing I watch on NBC, before that, it was Chuck. Sometimes, I feel like NBC just has it in for my favourite shows. =(

After watching the powerful episode that aired Sat. May 4th, without giving too much away, at the end I felt as if a member of my family had died. The acting in this show is superb; every character has you believing they are REAL. The performances are first-rate. I almost never, EVER comment or campaign so much for a show to be saved. There are so few worth the time and effort. SMASH gets more compelling with every installment. Saturday night 8:00pm finds me glued to my TV.

  • http://twitter.com/Jan8Hare delfiteblu

This show is a gem = I look forward to it like a present on Christmas morning. THIS season has been a little less….structured…with the Hit List introduction, but there is simply nothing on TV like SMASH = from the music to the lighting design. I, along with literally THOUSANDS of others are hoping like heck that it’s renewed. If you DO love musical theater, SMASH is definitely the show for you! <3

  • http://www.facebook.com/guilemoreira Guilherme Eugênio

SMASH is such a great show! Don’t cancel it, NBC! #keepSMASHING

  • Karen

I believe Smash is just finally coming into its own. The networks are way to quick to pull the plug on shows that need to develop over time. This season Smash has become better and better with each episode. I hope the network can see the value in renewing for another season.

  • Phil

I would really hate to see this show cancelled. There is more art and heart in it than a host of other shows on TV that survive only because of the dumbing down of the viewing audience. Networks have always held on to shows which were low on viewer numbers (ratings) and high on critical reviews – Homicide comes to mind. I don’t think it ever had passable numbers but it survived as broadcast excellence on its merits. That being said, if Smash is cancelled, perhaps it can find a second life on a cable network like USA… NBC has so very little of merit to brag about they really need this piece of quality, talent, and class to remain in their line-up

  • Lynne

This show is something I look forward to, and I would be extremely sad if NBC does not give it the chance it deserves. I love the musical numbers, dance, and characters, except for one. There isn’t another show like it on tv. People pay $100 or more a ticket to see a Broadway show and here you can practically have one in your living room. What makes it more interesting is all the machinations behind the scenes that we see every week. Smash deserves a fighting chance and NBC should never have moved it to Sat. night. What did they think would happen. The show they replaced Smash with, is already cancelled. Smash has broad audience , and from what I’ve read, a good percentage of people who watch are high income who have bucks to spend. This show has so much more potential. It is art. 3 people in my family watch it, from different households. We will all be disappointed if NBC does not renew it.

  • Bailey

I think Smash is amazing and as you said, exposes many people to theatre! Also, I mean how can you not just love seeing Megan Hilty on TV every week?

  • Janet

Smash very quickly became a favorite for me. I was introduced to musical theater as a child, always as audience; I wasn’t blessed with musical talent. I’ve always loved the theater, and Smash brings it home weekly.
It would be a crying shame for the show to end before it got a chance to find its audience.

I love this show SO much. My husband and I watch faithfully every week, and we end up holding tears back in many situations. I’m always excited to watch and can’t wait to see what’s next!

cancel glee and keep smash!! smash is the best show i have seen in a looong time!

  • Knybee

People may diss the first season but from the opening number “Let Me be your Star” with a duet by the great voices of Katherine and Megan I was hooked. Television audiences of today don’t get to hear such things that were once common in the 50′s and 60′s on variety shows. I am a musician and my daughter has been involved in musical theatre and it’s inspiring to hear such good songwriting and singing. Without this show television audiences can only look to Glee which is basically geared to one audience, the youth of today. We have enough doctor, lawyer, judge, cop, spy, forensic, and reality shows. If anything the tv honchos should give us a break from some of those.

  • Monique Sauve

Best show on tv. Kimmy and Kyle have added much to this show. Season 2 has been so much better than 1. I sure hope this show is not cancelled.

My fingers are raw from voting for weeks. SMASH is by far the most REFRESHING, ENGAGING and WONDERFUL show to come along in decades! DON’T make the mistake of canceling such a TREASURE. My WHOLE FAMILY watches (10 of us) wherever they are and my husband is just as big a fan as I am! I wake up each day with the songs in my head and seconds later I’m humming or singing out loud! This is a DREAM COME TRUE SHOW. I’M ON MY KNEES, BEGGING YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PLEASE SAVE SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you!!!!!!!

This show is just getting going and it would be a shame to not give it another season! It would also be a shame not to explore the chemistry between Derek and Karen further! DON’T CANCEL SMASH!! https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

I still cannot believe that NBC could even fathom cancelling this show. It is the ONLY show on network television worth watching. The acting and music are incredible. When will these local networks realize that there are people out there that are just sick and tired of reality, sitcoms and cop shows? I can only pray that if NBC is short sighted enough to cancel this show, a cable network picks it up. At least they know quality shows.

This show is absolutely one of the best on TV! It’s innovative and different. The music is terrific and many of the characters are compelling. This is why so many of us are fighting tirelessly to keep it on the air. Please check out our facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

Don’t cancel SMASH! I love it!

  • Marion

I love musical theatre, and I am a HUGE fan of SMASH. I agree that season had too much relationship soap opera, but they’ve fixed that. And even last season, the story about how the Broadway show comes together, with all its ups and downs, plus the wonderful musical numbers, much more than outweighed the problems. I have watched every single episode, during both seasons. This season it has been harder, due to the move to Saturday night, but still I’ve watched all episodes, some when they air, and some on my computer afterward. I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, but I love this show. It would be such a shame if NBC cancels it….a really good show lost without a real chance to build its audience. I am not alone in this view…..see https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Chrisy

I look forward to SMASH every week. I have watch the episode (that I recorded) all alone when kids are in bed because I hang on EVERY word of it. I love it – please don’t cancel it!

  • Arn J

It is hard to find quality programming, such as Smash. I hope NBC sees the potential in this Hit and at the least move it to one of its Subsidiaries. Here is an idea: make it an original series with new episodes on Hulu.

  • Lorychaplin@yahoo.com

This is an excellent show. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with all its twists and turns. LOVE it!!

There is something for EVERYONE in SMASH!

My husband can’t stand musicals or anything close to “Classic Broadway”…add a smart-ass character like Derek, and he has someone who he identifies with and can appreciate.

My mother taught me to appreciate the great talents of people such as Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, and Anjelica Huston.

Not to mention seeing talents of ACTUAL Broadway who are closer to my own age such as Krysta Rodriguez and Wesley Taylor (whom I’m using as examples because I am now hooked on the original Addams Family Musical cast).

It doesn’t get too melodramatic or the least bit campy, which overall makes this series trumps GLEE in my book.

My heart breaks at the thought of losing this amazing series when there’s SO many other shows that don’t deserve the ratings they receive.

Any and ALL fans of ANY type of musical, from the classics to the jukebox musicals of today, should watch SMASH. In all likelihood, they’d enjoy it.

I love SMASH. It is adult and intelligent. It needs a third or a fourth or a fifth or a . . . . season. If you want to help it not get cancelled go here & register

this is an incredibly well written acticle about a television show that offers us a touch of broadway…and for that i am grateful. i am one that loves theatre and fell in love with Smash from day one. i would follow them to Sunday morning if need be.

NBC please give this show a chance. there is amazing talent from iconic to newly discovered…but talent abounds. give them a fair spot, good writers and watch it rise. i have seen so many great show cancel while mind numbing reality takes the place. i refuse to watch reality rubbish, while Smash is one of the few shows set to record so i never miss a program.
if, sadly, Smash does not return…the people involved need to know they were appreciated, loved and will be greatly missed.

  • Erika

I definitely say keep Smash!!! It’s seriously one of the few shows that I can relate to. All the characters are so different yet they compliment each other incredibly well. It is absolutely something more people should be watching :) Favorite show by far xx

I love Smash. I usually avoid watching NBC because they cancel any show that is’t reality, a version of Law and Order or their attempt to find a new Friends but I made an exception of Smash because it sounded so much like something I would enjoy. I fell in love with the show, the characters, the music and hoped that NBC would not cancel. This is a great show. It might have some weak spots but the characters, music, action all alicit strong emotional response, even those things we hate.

I love the show nothing like it on tv its Glee for adults and it might have some flaws but what show doesnt! it needs another chance it has such great potential. PLEASE PLEASE DONT CANCEL

  • The Scarlet Pumpernickel

Many valid points, but I disagree with the praise of “Hit List” and its attendant elements. I’m a classic Broadway type.

  • Linda

such a fun show! Love Megan Hilty and Jeremy Jordan. A lot of us really love “all that singing and dancing”. It’s a chance to see real talent in a non-”reality” show format. Bring on Seson 3!

  • C. Green

I loved this show last season much more than I like it this season. Thank goodness they got rid of that strange play Ivy was doing, but dividing attention between Hit List and Bombshell doesn’t feel like the ideal solution either. Your article doesn’t appear to acknowledge that Kyle is dead . . . I didn’t see the date, but it’s not likely he’ll be back unless they keep up the annoying daydreams. I waited all summer for Smash to come back, and I’m sorry the show’s producers are so insecure that they let a little negative press push the show around, in plot, in costuming, in time-slot, in attitude.

  • Elizabeth

I honestly cannot stand the Jeremy Jordan/Katharine Mcphee side of the show. Jeremy’s character is insufferable, and Mchpee is the only actor without real broadway experience and it shows. Her voice is much to pop and not plausibly big enough for a real life stage, and her acting is so lackluster and/or whiney. I really like Hit List and Krysta Rodriguez, but I find myself fast forwarding through the Manhattan Theater Workshop scenes because of Jeremy and Kat. Megan Hilty is the best part of the show (she has so much talent, I am just waiting for her to break into movie musicals and win a best supporting Oscar ala Hathaway and Zeta-Jones) and I could not have been happier when she got Marilyn. I can see Mcphee’s appeal from a marketing standpoint (she’s the only face mainstream audiences would know) but to me her character is a pointless waste of space who is now going to create drama with Ivy over the Tonys. (Fuck you, Jerry) I just hope it doesn’t go off the air before the “Tonys” happen. Ivy deserves to win.

  • Bee Stuff

Smash is so unique. It really deserves to continue to be on the air. It is nonviolent. We have too many realty shows and not enough scripted drama these days. If you want to help save, it please go to this site: https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • Christina

I absolutely love the show and I especially love the direction that the show has taken in the past season. Please do not cancel!!!! I adore musical theatre on tv and it is so incredibly well done!

  • Sherryl

I love smash! I always wondered about the Broadway stars, where did they live, what did they do in between shows, how was auditioning. I was thrilled when Smash came on T.V. and I haven’t misses one show. The actors are all talented! The music is GREAT! I will be heartbroken if its cancelled! I don’t understand why people don’t like it. I ask myself are they really watching the same show as I am. PLEASE DONT CANCELL SMASH!!

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

    I miss Ellis.

  • Denise

I look forward to each weekly episode and I am never “bored” with it. Just when there might be a lull in the story line, another terrific production number happens and draws me right back in. I have to wonder if the cost of producing such fantastic production numbers isn’t truly the real reason that the show is in trouble. Not enough profit margin for the stockholders? If it goes, I will miss it, turn off the television and go read a book.

  • Erin

This show is a HIT that was never properly marketed. It’s one of the ONLY quality shows that NBC has. It’s like Glee’s older, more mature cousin. It has ORIGINAL music and beautiful performances. It’s the show all the “Gleeks” yearn to find as they grow up. Market to those people && you’ll find the audience you need!! PLEASE don’t give up on Smash!!!

  • Just saying

The biggest mistake Smash made was casting Katharine McPhee. I know many, many people who have never ever liked her since the moment she stepped foot on the American Idol stage and did not watch this show because she was in it. She awful on Idol but the judges pet, she was too much over kill, but the power that be at AI tried way too hard to push her on America with all the MCphever crapola, oh and It kind of helps when your mother is the the American Idol voice coach. America is not stupid whatever miracle landed her in the final 2 on Idol didn’t work because America hated her, she lost to Taylor Hicks what does that tell you? That being said I was very excited to see the first promos for this show during he Macys day parade in 2011. It looked so good and I could not wait for it to premier until I saw “introducing Katharine McPhee” and then I knew I would never watch it and I never did! Never watched one episode and apparently many others didn’t either. Bring it back without McPhee and you may just get the audience you need. I for one would tune in.

I am crushed this show has been cancelled. it is great! Please NBC….please bring it back!

  • Carol

It’s such a good show. Maybe they could find another home. With so much bad TV on the networks, this show was really entertaining. Very disappointed to see it off the air.

  • WTM

My Wife and I both thought SMASH was a good musical series. It had a lot of talent and the second season was very good. ( first was ok) We only question why it took so much time to get the 2nd season on TV. Most of the seasons of any program on TV now only have 12 to 13 episodes and when you have long periods between seasons people will lose interest in the program. Why is Hollywood doing this? A lot of programs in the last 5 years have lost their viewers and fan base for that reason. We are sad for this cancellation and that a great program like SMASH bites the dust because of delays for season re-starts and that the ratings are used so quickly to kill programs. I often wonder if some sort of Hollywood politics are involved instead of just ratings. After all there are some really stupid and poorly written 30 minute programs that stay on for years, why??????

  • Najee

Its crazy how every single fan of this show feels the same strong emotion whenever they tuned in! I had the show cancel on me abruptly and finally had the time to finish the last few episodes. My goodness….did they have a great BIG FINISH! I’m pleased to be able to experience such an amazing work altogether. The cast, the writing team, costume designers, makeup artists, musicians…whomever was involved, THANK YOU!
Smash was the single modern revival show for bringing back great television.

    …too bad. <3
