Last weekend The Hobbit trilogy director Peter Jackson hosted a live chat for those who purchased An Unexpected Journey on Blu-ray, and now a clip from the event has been released!

The entire live event lasted an hour, but the clip released today is only six minutes. In it, Jackson and his team answer questions submitted by fans including The Colbert Report‘s Stephen Colbert. The comedian has never been secret about his love for all things Middle Earth and doesn’t hold back when asking his question of Jackson.

Elsewhere in the clip we see a bit of new concept art and learn about the difficulties of transforming The Hobbit from two parts into three.

“It is complicated to do a middle film,” Jackson said after being asked about part two. “But the advantage is we have multiple story lines. The first of the Hobbit movies is a fairly linear film. Gandalf leads the dwarves across Middle Earth at the beginning of this adventure. The great thing about the second movie, as it was with The Two Towers, is that the story starts splitting into multiple story lines. We follow different characters as the story intensifies as the stakes go up.” Dispersed throughout his answer is great behind-the-scenes footage from Desolation of Smaug.

Warner Bros. has said that an edited version of the live event would be posted online. It’s unclear at this time if this is all that it’s going to be releasing, or if more is on the way. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters December 13, 2013.

Is it December yet? I need to see The Desolation of Smaug now please. :) I just watched An Unexpected Journey for the first time last week. In the book, Gandalf mentions that they took care of The Necromancer while Bilbo and the Dwarves were in Erebor. I know we’ll be seeing that, but I’m curious to know how they are doing this.
