Watch the final episode of the Game of Thrones-inspired webseries School of Thrones, and read our review! It’s the moment of truth… because prom is here!
The three-episode School of Thrones webseries brought George R.R. Martin’s iconic A Song of Ice and Fire saga into the modern world, taking the characters from the series and re-imagining them as high school characters.
In the first two episodes, we saw how different power couples started campaigning for the prestigious titles of Prom King and Queen, and in the finale, we learn who won the throne of Westeros Valley High – well, sort of.
Check out the final episode here:
Are you surprised?! It’s just like that creepy Littlefinger to try to take the throne for himself, isn’t it? And poor Jon, suffering Dany’s rejection (though we were happy to see biker Drogo make an appearance!).
While there were so many things about this episode we loved, like for episode 1 and episode 2, we’ve picked out our top 5 moments. Read our list, and share your own favourite parts in the comments!
5. Arya is coming! And the promise of more
…Well, maybe. While nothing is official, the School of Thrones crew are actively encouraging fans to subscribe to their YouTube channel so they can gauge how much interest there is for them to come back and do more, and most of the actors have definitely expressed interest in returning for a sequel.
In Hypable’s recent interview with Maxwell Glick (Stannis), he talks about Arya being his favourite character, and how she’ll hopefully be introduced in future episodes. And with Jon mentioning her in this final episode, too, we definitely expect to see her play a much more prominent role… if we’re lucky enough to get a second season.
4. The Stannis/Renly dance-off
Now this was a much better way to settle their differences than sending shadow babies after each other, wasn’t it? This scene was a perfect example of how dramatic high school can really be, and how to these kids, a dance-off really is a legitimate way to settle the score.
We’ve raved before about Glick’s brilliant portrayal of Stannis, and here both he and Brendan Bradley get to show off their dancing (and acting) chops. Who knew the repressed and until-now-unsmiling Stannis had those moves?!
3. Theon’s betrayal
Oh, Theon. He just wants people to love him. One of the most noteworthy things about School of Thrones is the way it has managed to take this pretty much universally hated character from Game of Thrones and turn him into a fan favourite (sorry Theon fans).
Joey Richter and the writers have really managed to capture the essence of the character, while somehow turning all of his annoying traits into sympathetic ones. This makes his betrayal of Robb in this episode so believable (even though he’s only really had a few minutes of character development before it happens) – and later, when he decides that it really is Best Dudes Forever? Our hearts may have melted a little bit.
2. Dany’s Burn Book
The idea for this was just brilliant. Not only do they neatly get around that whole pesky fire thing, but it’s also the perfect way to tie everything up and bring some sort of resolution to all of the character arcs, considering how short the episodes have been.
The characters of Westeros (Valley High or otherwise) have a lot of secrets. And we kind of wish that someone would just bring one of these books along to a council meeting some time to just get everything out there the way Dany did here! Of course the reveals themselves are priceless too, like the one with Sansa and the Hound (all over the internet, SanSan shippers are cheering) and the little nod to Sam Tarly.
1. Littlefinger and Sansa taking the throne
This was our favourite thing about the finale, not only because it was a hilarious and unexpected final WTF moment (and so in character), but also because the fact that, the way we see it, School of Thrones didn’t just choose to end their version of Game of Thrones this way for comedic effect.
In A Song of Ice and Fire, there is definitely a connection between Littlefinger and Sansa – and without spoiling future books, let’s just say that them somehow taking the throne of Westeros together would be… interesting. (Although hey, maybe the Hound will have something to say about that, huh?!)
Honourable mentions: Everything else!
Security guard Jaime, Joffrey getting slapped again, Dany’s intensity, the Robb/Theon bromance, Jon joining the hall monitors, Sansa’s epiphany, and Varys giving Littlefinger the, well, finger… everything was hilarious, and fans of the series should definitely be able to enjoy all the little nods and references to the original series this final episode of School of Thrones.
Look for an interview with the School of Thrones producer Whitney Milam on our Game of Thrones podcast Game of Owns soon, where we talk about this episode and discuss how the webseries might come back. And make sure you subscribe to the School of Thrones YouTube channel, to show them that yes, we want more episodes!
After all, as Robb Stark so wisely says, “We live in a world of happy endings and just rewards, where the good guys always win.” And after season 3, we’re betting that Game of Thrones fans will need another dose of that world.
