Share your thoughts on tonight’s Once Upon a Time episode “Selfless, Brave and True,” and watch the promo for “Lacey.”

In this episode, Eion Bailey returned as August, and not only did we learn that he had been hiding out, wooden, all this time, but we also found out through flashbacks what he did with his life in between arriving in the real world and making contact with Emma as an adult.

Meanwhile in Storybrooke, Neal had to explain the truth about where he came from to his fiancee Tamara, who had arrived in town – much to Emma’s dismay.

In the next episode, Belle takes center stage – or should we say Lacey? Her Storybrooke alter ego struggles with the fact that everyone seems to know who she is while she herself has no idea… and a new iconic fairytale character is introduced: Robin Hood! Sadly we have to wait almost a month to meet him, as the show enters another break, and will return April 21.

      • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

        Three weeks.

        • Chelsea

actually 4 weeks. 3 weeks until a behind the scenes look. 4 until the actual episode.

          • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

Yeah I saw that after I posted it, but couldn’t delete the comment so I just left it alone. xD

  • Lucy

    Okay.. so that just happened..

I hate HATE hate hate HATE Tamara! Hate her so much.. I almost find her scarier than Regina because she will hold no prisoners..

SO I thought August was dead and I was going to cry and then he was a little boy and then I was yay! He’s alive but then he’s dead..

Snow is so epic with the arrows!

Back to Tamara and Greg- still hate them!

I don’t think the episode is next Sunday-It’s in a month!

    But Robin Hood!

  • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

I AM SO ANGRY ABOUT HOW HORRIBLE THIS EPISODE WAS I’M COMPLETELY FUMING

Rumple gave Neal the opportunity to turn back the clock, and he said that he wouldn’t do that because what happened to him MADE HIM WHO HE WAS. But because it’s AUGUST who gets turned back into a child, it’s okay. Everyone’s perfectly happy over it. (And by the way that had to have been the worst scene ever on the show, both with writing and acting, even if I love the cast dearly.) I don’t even like August but what they did with him was horrible writing in order to make a quick-fix for several holes in plot that the writers made.

I’m not even going to get into the whole Greg thing, or the Tamara thing because I’m so distracted by how horribly hypocritical the whole August thing was.

Oh and what do we get after this? YET ANOTHER HIATUS! As if we haven’t had about FIVE of them just since Christmas was over.

These last few episodes really need to blow people away with their writing because this crap is just getting out of hand.

    • Anna S.

I feel ya on the hiatus, my friend.

Also, if it was August dying or turning back into a child then I don’t see a problem. Rumple just wanted Neal to forget his life.

      • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

With that I was referring to the fact that Neal made it seem like such a horrible thing, but because it was August who forgot everything and went back to being a child then it’s suddenly okay because it makes things easier for the writers.

        • Anna S.

Okay, I gotcha! I know I hate it as well when the writers have to manipulate to help themselves.

        • 17jeda

It’s the price for the magic, he becomes a real BOY again

        • Carilyn

The thing is August *wanted* a new start. He felt his life was worthless. He hated what he’d become, succumbing to temptation every time to save his hide when he knew he shouldn’t. He failed to do the one thing he’d been sent to this world to do – to protect Emma and get her to break the curse. He had no family or loved ones all those years in our world (the girl he was sleeping with at the beginning of this episode didn’t seem to be that close to him), and the only family he had, the only family he’d missed for all those years, he was too ashamed to face.

Neal, on the other hand, had nothing to redeem, no reason to forget. Sure he’d been a thief, but by the time we meet him in Manhattan he’s making a decent, honest living for himself. He’d hurt Emma, but it was an act of selflessness. He’d found love and had good times with Emma and Tamara (though he doesn’t know Tamara is a fake yet), and just discovered he has a son when Rumple made the offer. Neal knew that Rumple was giving himself an easy way out by trying to get Neal to change, when Neal had absolutely no reason to. Rumple is the one who did wrong, and he wouldn’t let him get his love back so easily. (Plus if the whole “Neal was a lost boy” thing turns out to be true, why in the world would you want to forget that?!)

For all he’d been through, Neal was proud of who he was. August wasn’t. Neal didn’t want to be reunited with a father who wanted to erase his guilt. August desperately wanted the love and respect of his father back. For these reasons, I thought August becoming Pinocchio was a great twist, and a well earned resolution for August. The two deals, though dealing with a similar thing, were presented to different people by different people, and thus what is the right resolution for one character isn’t the right one for another.

          • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

While I understand where you’re coming from with this, I just feel like the whole thing was a cop-out, and poorly executed by all parties involved.

          • Carilyn

Well… I do agree that it wasn’t great form to finally bring August back after all these episodes only to turn him back into Pinocchio, however heartwarming and poetic it is.
If older August had been seen a little more, if he had talked explicitly about how badly he wanted to turn back the clock (in contrast to Neal who explicitly doesn’t), if he perhaps got to keep his memories a la the end of Jumanji (where, when the whole thing got rewound, the two characters who were adults for most of the film get to go back and put right what went wrong in the “Jumanji-influenced reality”, but they still faintly remembered what happened and what it was like to be adults, even if it faded into the back of their minds so that the traumatic details didn’t scar them for life) maybe that would have made this development feel more organic to the plot.
And actually, for all we know, the “Jumanji” one might be exactly what happened. We don’t know all the details of what Pinocchio remembers – we know he doesn’t remember Tamara’s deceit, but that doesn’t mean his whole former life has been wiped (a lot of people lose chunks of memory right around a traumatic/ near-death experience – take it from me, I’ve experienced this myself, and there wasn’t even de-aging magic involved!). Those faded memories might become useful in the future. Anyway, I just thought it was a great twist considering a lot of the other twists in the second half the season were predicted by at least a small section of the fandom (Neal being Baelfire, Tamara being “Her,” Cora dying). You can’t tell me that *anyone* predicted August would get turned back into Pinocchio as his redemption.

          • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

True, but like with other issues that you pointed out, this was a quick fix to a problem. For example, what happened to Graham and Cora was very similar. Both had been in the background quite a bit but no definite backstory was explored until the same episode they were killed off in. Graham was killed off because the curse wasn’t ready to be broken yet and Emma wouldn’t have been able to accept Graham’s memories of a truth of magic she wasn’t ready for, and Cora was killed off because she was evil and problematic and they’d already gotten what they wanted out of her which was a more definitive reason for Regina to hate Snow and for Snow’s heart to be tainted. Giving depth to a character and then killing them off in the same episode is easy. Making them work and giving them a place in the storyline is much harder to do.

Though I do like what you said about Jumanji (a movie I had actually just recently rewatched), I also feel that if Pinocchio remembers anything at all about being August not only would he feel shame but wouldn’t he also feel incredibly awkward? I mean, the episode started off with him in bed with a woman. I feel uncomfortable with the idea of a seven year old being aware of what it’s like to have sex with someone. I feel like it should be an all-or-nothing deal, considering doing otherwise is once again doing the easy and convenient thing. Like with Emma’s less-than-reliable lie detector “superpower”. It only works when it’s convenient.

          • Anna S.

            Here, here! Love this analysis!

        • http://twitter.com/CorbinBolies Corbin Bolies

The reason Neal hated it so much was because Rumple wanted to fix everything with magic, the one thing that drove the two apart. He didn’t hate his father trying to reconnect with him, he just hated how he wanted to, with magic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

On the note of the haitus, OUAT isn’t the only one that has so many. Glee does it all the time, so do many other 1 hour shows, and 30 minute ones now that I think about it. It’s still going to be the typical 22 episodes per season, as most shows are. We’re not losing episodes. They’re just spreading it out more. It is annoying, I agree, but they do it for a reason (though I’m not a hundred percent sure what it is, it’s probably many different factors).

      • http://twitter.com/notenoughpuff Sarah

It drives me insane because it feels like these clusters of episodes are made to be put together and then the last one before the break is supposed to be impressive and makes you want more but really they’ve just been lacking so much this season and it’s incredibly disappointing.

        • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

Understandable, I was just pointing out it’s not all that uncommon :) But I agree

      • http://twitter.com/Hmarjus2 Martrel A. Howard

Ever since the writers strike years ago tv has changed in content and in schedule, shows are no long on a regular schedule and they all have multiple hiatus’ to film episodes because no shows are given a chance to have a good full season run they are always on the chopping block for cancellation. So yeah the hiatus’ SUCK lol

  • http://twitter.com/RikuStark Ashley

THEY TURNED AUGUST BACK INTO A LITTLE BOY!? That was the biggest wtf moment I’ve witnessed on this show so far, but I can’t say I’m bothered by it…Just shocked…Like really shocked.

Not surprised that Tamara was evil, but she’s definitely more sinister and cunning than I expected, and a lot of you were right! She is Her. I feel sorry for Neal..He’s getting played. I feel violated for him right now. It makes me wonder what Tamara’s motive is though, we know Owen’s, so what’s her reason for finding magic…What is she really after…Maybe something to do with her Grandmother. There’s obviously a story there.

    Great episode!

    Final thoughts: ROBIN HOOD!

    • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

I think that the change was teased in a photo weeks ago, BUT IT DOESN’T CHANGE THE FACT I AM STILL UPSET ABOUT IT!

    • http://forgiveyourmind.tumblr.com/ Tariq

They literally had NO reason to turn him back into a little boy other than the fact that it would end the Tamara storyline way quicker. The fact they used that as a plot device was so obvious. I’m SO upset by it. Maybe if he was turned back into an adult and didn’t remember that would be fine, I’d be less upset. BUT A SEVEN YEAR OLD? REALLY? -___-

      • http://twitter.com/RikuStark Ashley

I’m almost sorry to say this, but I think I would have been a little more satisfied if August just died. I know it was suppose to be a happy ending for Marco, but I feel like there’s like zero risk on this show anymore. It was just so weird!

        • http://forgiveyourmind.tumblr.com/ Tariq

I TOTALLY agree! His death would’ve made everything so much easier to accept as a fan and move on with the story lines they’ve provided. Now they’ve just angered us with how stupid their decisions are.

  • Nick

They wrote out August and wrote in boy pinocchio. =/

  • Carilyn

On the one hand, I’m really proud of August and so glad he gets a new start with his father. On the other hand, I feel really bad for the Emma/August shippers… though interviews have stated they are more like brother and sister, the ship is still out there. But if anything can kill a ship faster than death, it’s turning one of them into a seven-year-old.

Also, I wanted to see the Dragon as a dragon (which I’m assuming he was)! That would have been so cool. How does a taser kill a dragon? is it a magic taser? For that matter, how does it kill enchanted wood?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

      Jane Espenson@JaneEspenson

      I don’t think that was a regular taser. #OnceUponATime

      • Carilyn

I thought so – it seemed too powerful to be a regular taser. Question is, how did Tamara get it, and is it magic or something altogether different? The woman does seem to have some interesting resources at her disposal if she could scan the vial of magic for any known element on earth. Thanks for citing that!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gavin-Walsh/100000260589961 Gavin Walsh

          Route 66 anyone ??

    • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

All of Emma’s love interests die in the Sheriff’s station… Neal! Stay away from there!

  • http://twitter.com/potterfan92 Raina

I kinda didn’t like that the new character of Tamra has turned out evil. She is a woman of color and could add some diversity to the cast but the way her story is going she might die. I mean we just meet her in Manhattan and had no indication that she might have been evil. Her part of the story felt like retcon if anything. The August thing, I was with it until he turned into a little boy. That seemed weird and kinda stupid. The ending with Greg and Tamara was way too forced.

    • 17jeda

Because all the evil people have died already, oh wait, just Cora, haha

    • spacie19

Yeah all of the people of color on the show are evil or MIA or both. Regina, Sidney, Tamara- evil, Mulan, Lancelot- MIA. I’m really bored with this Storybrook arc-centric period. I want to go back to meeting new fairytale characters and their origin stories on the other side. And ditto on the Greg and Tamara thing being super cheesy.

  • http://twitter.com/Nick_BD Nick_BD

Wish they didn’t spoil Robin Hood in a trailer.

  • Anna S.

I’m so glad Tamara sucks and is Greg’s Her! Also August is an Emma/Neal shipper! This is the best.

Wish we saw more of Neal and Gold together. I do like those father-son relationships…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

My only theory is that it belongs to the Dragon and she stole it from him. . .or found a way to extract some magic portion from him and applied it to the taser.

  • Alice Parker

While Robin Hood isn’t a “Fairy Tale” of sorts, Disney = ABC, so Robin Hood being on OUAT makes some amount of sense. I mean, Mulan isn’t a “princess” or a “fairy tale” either. I hope they manage to write in a good backstory for him though. If he’s already in the Enchanted Forest. If he’s not, then he better have some reason to make Regina mad, which is my explanation as to why Frankenstein is the only one from his world to be in Storybrooke, because he crossed Regina’s anger and caused her grief.

    • 17jeda

Enchanted Forest does not equal fairy tales….

      • Alice Parker

But a majority of the characters from the Enchanted Forest have been featured in fairy tales. If you’re referring to the fact that I mentioned Mulan was in the Enchanted Forest world and she’s not a fairy tale, then maybe the “Enchanted Forest” is for Disney movie characters? I’m just speculating and trying to figure out what constitutes someone as an Enchanted Forest character.

        • 17jeda

See and i would definitely agree with some points, and i would also say the book designates Enchanted Forest, except flying monkeys picture….

      • Alice Parker

Sorry. I guess I kind of figured that, but it seems like a lot of the Enchanted Forest characters have their own fairy tale or are characters from a fairy tale. Or are from movies created from Disney, i.e. Mulan. I guess what I really mean is that if Robin Hood ends up in Storybrooke, there’s a high chance he was from the Enchanted Forest (Sherwood?) unless he had a way to portal jump, like Frankenstein.

  • Melissa

I didn’t like this episode one bit. It was one giant “WTF?!?” moment.

  • El

If they made Tamara evil only as a plot device for Neal and Emma getting back together, I’m going to be incredibly pissed off by this show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

    Also, WOOD DOESN’T CONDUCT ELECTRICITY!

    • Samma

THANK YOU, WTF STORYBROOKE? LEARN YOUR SCIENCE!

  • jj horigan

has this show been cancelled for next season yet?

    • OuaTfangirl

      Wow.

what an arrogant, self-centered instigating thing to say.

you might not like the way the show has gone along- but to wish it got cancelled just because YOU don’t like it? reeks of disgrunted fan entitlement.

it’s a shitty thing to wish for, considering there are other people who watch this show besides you.

and guess what? There are plenty of people who still like- giant convoluted plotholes and all.

so just because You don’t like it and wish it gone, doesn’t mean it should be- because There ARE people that still enjoy it. and it’s for them that the show is still on.

No one is forcing you to watch it, if you obviously hate it so much, watch something else.

  • http://twitter.com/Hmarjus2 Martrel A. Howard

Great Episode. Tamara looks “evil” and the fact that shes a not so good person is cool i guess im just upset that she’s playing Niel and Greg thinks shes on his side but im pretty sure that shes going to cross him or even kill him. Regina had the best line of this episode “You should try the fish special its right up your alley, blackened sole”. OMG I HATED THE REBIRTH OF PINNOCHIO WHAT THE HELL. Fist of all u essentially just killed August and you present a nugget of “BEWARE” with no means of finding out what/who to beware of until what? Greg loses his phone and Ruby finds the video like wat the hell REALLY. The absence of Rumpel was oddly refreshing and equally unsettling especial with Hook nowhere to be found. hhmmm maybe Hook is working with Tamara now maybe? and hey is ‘the dragon” that lil Dragon from the Mulan story? I wanted to see him transform though too bad Tamara killed him… All in all the theme of redemption was heavy in this episode. Mary MArgarets intense feelings of “AUGUST CAN CAHNGE HE WILL DO BLAH BLAH” she was projection her feelings really hard but by the end of the episode it was obvious that Snow’s heart would be fine… OMG i totally thought when David touched her chest he was going to rip out her heart and show it to her like BABE YOUR HEART IS FINE LOOK NO SPOT lmfao Sidebar what are the shows writers trying to say with People of Color ,Killing them off , having them “Evil” or in league with “Evil” and in limbo? Mulan is MIA, LAncelot is Dead, Tamara is Evil and presumably will die. Sydney/Mirror is uh dead? i mean really is storybrooke really meant to be “white- out” or “Colorless”?

  • Nerdnuts

Tamra states that she isn’t magic, but neither is snow or charming right? She still might be from another land. Just not magic. Or did I hear that wrong?,

  • midnight.blue

Really?? That taser had that much kick to kill a wooden man…without burning him up? Was this the foreshadowing for how they will reverse all of what happened to the fairy tale characters getting their happy endings back? By someone turning back the clock…aka Rumple…so that none of this ever happened by the end of this series? Just a reboot n everything goes back to normal? Egh? I guess that’s one way of fixing a black heart problem…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=636033419 Maritere Domínguez

From Where did this Tamara character came from? I just want to know her backstory, I´m hating her so much already!. It was wierd but hilarious when Snow hits Pinoccio´s father (They call him Marco but I just think he´s Gepeto). Maybe this Tamara and Owen evil characters will bring the people from Storybrook come together to fight them, including Regina.

WTF with turning August to LITTLE pINOCCIO? poot neil :/

  • Samma

OMG Tom Ellis is Robin Hood I am stupidly excited about this. Love. Him.

  • lorepottter

Well, i think that the Dragon was Mushi from Mulan, and now im mad about August bein a little boy again, come on give Emma a break, now o want h er with Hook ever more..the have chemistry together and no one can say no a guy with that eyeline.

In other things, who the hell is Tamara @Nerdnuts:disqus has a good point, she maybe is not magic, but that doesnt mean she isnt from a fairy tale, besides we have Frankenstein too, so that implies we have to look more…

  • WillowBlood

As a fervent Wooden Swan shipper, I feel terrible saying this, but… I honestly would have preferred August die than turn back into a little boy. Eion Bailey is fantastic, and he made August one of my favorite characters. I cried when I saw wooden August, and cried for the rest of the episode and about ten minutes afterward.

Luckily, I also ship Captain Swan and Swan Thief/Swanfire, so hope not all my ships have sunk. And I’m still holding out hope that Dr. Whale can somehow bring Graham to life, even though that’s never going to happen…

On a side note, being Neal sucks.

    • http://twitter.com/CorbinBolies Corbin Bolies

      1. Is there anyone ELSE to ship with Emma (besides bagels, I saw that somewhere xD) 2. Graham’s body is a decomposed pile of corpse right now, so I HIGHLY doubt he’ll come back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/katgiambruno Kat Giambruno

Ya know…… Glee and Once Upon a Time really need to alternate their breaks better. It’s bad enough when one of my favorite shows is on break but two? Thank goodness Doctor Who is back this week.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=515348470 Stephanie Godfrey

Well I didn’t have any problems with this episode. It was a little odd, but I still enjoyed it.
I have absolutely no problem with August turning back into a boy. He gets a second chance, and I think that’s awesome.
I didn’t see that coming with Tamera and Greg at the end. Kinda shocked me….and it makes me wonder if the theory I had before the ending about her grandmother maybe having something to do with magic is even close to being true. Guess we just have to wait and see.
Also I can’t wait to see Robin Hood!

  • Zoe

I really hope Onceable comes out quickly this time and not over a week after it’s aired -_- because I really liked this episode and I want to see everyone’s reactions.

    • OUAT Fan :)

      Same!

  • http://www.facebook.com/shavindrasharma Shavindra Sharma

I love seeing actors from other shows, Like Tom Ellis from Miranda who plays Robin Hood… and Sonequa Martin-Green playing Tamara, who’s on The Walking Dead! :)

  • http://twitter.com/Shaftsword Shaft Almasy

That episode was the worst of a bad bunch I think that this will be the last season I go with OUAT it is perhaps too much like Lost for my liking

  • G.O.

UGGGGHHHHH! Turn August back into an adult! This is so unfair! Killing my August/Emma ship! :( I now only have Emma/Hook left to love so they better happen! I don’t care how long it takes!
