Fox has announced that actress Shailene Woodley will play Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars movie!

In a press release sent to Hypable, John Green commented on today’s news. “I am absolutely thrilled that Shailene will be playing Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars,” he said. “It means a lot to me that she is a fan of the book, and I know from our conversations that she has a profound understanding of Hazel. Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me. It was eerie–and very exciting.”

Added director Josh Boone, “During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”

Said producer Wyck Godfrey: “When choosing the writers, director and now our first actor for FAULT we’ve gone with the people that have had the strongest, most emotional and insightful connection to the material. Shailene’s love of the book and dedication to the character was evident in not only her pursuit of the role but her delivery of the essence of Hazel in her audition. I have no doubt that she will deliver a Hazel that will floor both fans of the book and those who have yet to be introduced to the transcendent story of The Fault in Our Stars.”

Rumors of Woodley’s involvement surfaced in February. Josh Boone joined the project as director on February 19. Hypable has it on good authority that Cameron Monaghan has been under consideration for the co-starring role of Gus.

Woodley will next be seen in another highly anticipated book to film adaptation: Veronica Roth’s Divergent. She’ll also star in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane Watson. The films hit theaters March 21, 2014 and May 2, 2014 respectively. A release date for The Fault in Our Stars movie has not been set yet.

    We were warned I guess.

  • http://twitter.com/CodeyWhite Codey White

    DFTBA Shailene!

    • Ellen M

Wow. I actually had to google that. I’m getting old.

  • Nerdfighter007

Mmmmm. Reserving judgement. I loved her in The Descendants, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

  • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

Oh, all the hate she’s gonna get for this. (Why are people reacting so badly to her? It’s ridiculous, saying she’ll break up Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone or that she’s ruined the Divergent trilogy – has this girl done anything wrong except maybe star in a really bad TV show?) I’m thrilled. She seems like a really intelligent person, and like she can bring that intelligence to Hazel and Tris, and maybe make for a more interesting MJ Watson than what we’ve had. All this rage and annoyance will die down eventually, I know, but I wish people would give her a chance to prove it to them. Anyone who’s seen The Descendants knows it, this girl has what all of these characters need. Team Shailene.

    • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

(Also I’d like to add ‘Because she’s getting all the good roles’ isn’t a valid reason to hate her, actresses who get that many good roles in such a short space of time are either controversial or just damn talented, and she’s obviously not the former…she’s getting all the good roles because she’s GOOD. I’d like to remind everyone of the moment when Jennifer Lawrence was cast in THG – maybe we all try to forget how awful people were about that, saying she was too overweight, too blond, too not-right, and now the world is at her feet. I’m not saying to bow down to Shailene Woodley, I’m just saying – give her a chance.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/XHogwartsWillAlwaysBeThereToWelcomeYouHome Kristin Ann

I agree…except I actually love Secret Life but that’s just me. I think people just don’t give anyone a chance after one bad one. I know a lot of people don’t like Secret Life but her character is supposed to be like that. The Descendants was amazing and she did really good. I think she will be great at Tris in Divergent. As for this role, never heard of it but I’m sure she will be amazing as well. People need to stop being so judgmental about everything.

    • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

There’s already a lot of hate on Tumblr, and it really depresses me. Just because she wasn’t your first choice doesn’t give you the right to hate on her. That’s why I try not to precast movies in my head because I know it will most likely not turn out to be how I want it too. I’ll stand up for Shailene. She’s getting these roles for a reason. She isn’t a bad actress, as Cliche said if you have seen The Descendants you would probably see this. Just because she was on a corny TV show doesn’t mean she’s a bad actress. ALL of the most prominent actors have projects that they would probably like us to forget. So I say, YOU GO SHAILENE

    • Quirinus

I personally don’t dislike her, but I just really thought Mae Whitman would be a great Hazel

    • Crazy-Eight23

I know! She is a wonderful actress, accept for that god awful Secret Life. People are so judgmental. She had one bad show (Secret Life) but look at what that show has done for her career! Every actor has tv/movies they wish they could forget. In Woodley’s case, she has a show everyone hates BUT KEEPS WATCHING! So shut the hell up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Alissa.Claire Alissa Roy

I think that part of the reason that people don’t like her is because she’s playing two different characters. It’s not that we hate her for playing these characters, but rather because the actor becomes synonymous with the characters that they play, so it will feel very strange to see her as both Hazel and Tris. I mean, watching “Perks of Being a Wallflower” you see Emma Watson, who is an amazing actress as Sam, but you still can’t get the image of Hermione out of your head. Maybe if these movies were further apart it wouldn’t be an issue, but this is kind of how I feel about the whole matter. I really hope that she will be able to pull it off!

  • http://twitter.com/leviosa96 Lovisa Andersson

I don’t know what to think, but I won’t say I’m against it until I’ve at least seen some scenes of her as Hazel. I guess it could have been worse? And John likes her, so that’s good.

  • http://twitter.com/madge_witt Madge Witt

I’m excited to see what Woodley brings to the role of Hazel and will reserve my judgement until after I see her in character on the big screen.

  • Emiy

The only reason this makes me mad is beacause she is already starring as Tris in Divergent. That will most likely be a three movie franchise. Both books, Divergent and TFIOS, are amazing works of literature that will most likely attract the same demographic of people, therefore i think that they should have hired a different actress for movies that will be coming out in around the same time frame.

  • kathryn

ugh… she’s not at all what I pictured but I’ll try to give her the benefit of the doubt.

  • Mariah

I’m okay with Shailene, but Cameron Monaghan being considered for Gus? really? :/

    • Guest

Why do you oppose to him being Gus? Because he’s not the typical cookie-cutter attractive teenager who would normally be considered for the role? I think he would be a pretty decent Gus honestly. I think he has the acting chops to pull it off.

      • Mariah

As harsh as this may seem, yeah, that’s why. He just simply isn’t the drop-dead gorgeous Augustus that’s described in the book. To be fair, I will admit I’ve never seen any of his work, so i can’t speak to his acting ability. I’m usually not one of those people who are super into dreamcasting, so I can’t even say who I’d prefer for the role, but…he just doesn’t look like Augustus to me. I know that’s probably totally unfair, but that’s just how I feel.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1297260009 Elise Hammond

I’ve never seen any of his work actually either, but my goodness, the gifs of that boy on tumblr from his role on shameless…swoon. And I’m pretty sure he’s jailbait for me, but seriously, these gifs… like he oozes chemistry and charisma in gifs

        • nothankyousir

Also – he looks like Shailene’s baby brother. He is way too young looking.

  • Sarah

She can’t be too bad of an actress if she scored all three roles in the first place!
    P.S. Sooo excited for Divergent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1297260009 Elise Hammond

It sounds like she is really going all out and I love that the people involved seem to really care about TFIOS as a story. I do really really hope that she cuts her actual hair like Hazel’s. I need to go watch The Descendants so I can see more of her acting chops.

  • http://twitter.com/BilliamSays Bill Anderson

…I’m not particular fond of the casting, but if John is for it… I trust his decision.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=646371872 Elizabeth Lee Hammons

Same here. I wasn’t thrilled at first, but I trust John. If he didn’t think she was the best choice, he would either tell us or not say anything at all.

  • http://twitter.com/sparklylulz g. bunnymunds

  • TaylorTheNerdFighter

I don’t understand the hate on Tumblr. If true fans of John, or TFIOS read this article, THEY’D BE ECSTATIC. He said she was his IDEAL Hazel. Wouldn’t you trust the WRITER of this book to be able to pick a good character?

    • http://www.facebook.com/SarahTipton Sarah Tipton

    • Becky

Books belong to their readers. =]

  • El

This totally ruined my day. Sorry not sorry, they could’ve cast someone better. I’m not interested in seeing the film anymore. I like Shailene (esp in the Descendants) but this is one of my favorite books, I don’t want it to be ruined.

    • http://twitter.com/AntaraC Antara Chowdhury

Regardless of how the movie turns out, the book will not be ruined. The Percy Jackson movie was bad, but the book series is still great. The Last Airbender movie was an absolute disgrace, but the show was still epic. How will a movie adaptation ruin anything? And I bet you’re still going to end up seeing the TFIOS movie.

      • Jennifer

Hmm… How will a movie adaptation ruin anything you ask? The example you pulled up about Percy Jackson, for instance. The fans of the books were disappointed about the casting. The books were still good, but if the fans of the book were anticipating the movie and expected the movie to be as good as the books, it would be disappointing to find out that the movie was exactly the opposite of what they thought it would turn out. Having to wait all that time for a movie and then find out that it ISN’T good… well, it’s not the best feeling. Don’t forget that some people will start relying on the movie to know the story instead of reading the book, which is an absolute masterpiece.

        • http://twitter.com/AntaraC Antara Chowdhury

Of course it’s disappointing, but it doesn’t take away from the original work. And with Percy Jackson, I still see so many fans excited about the trailer and the new stills, despite all of the changes they’ve made.

Anyway, my reply was to somebody who was being overly dramatic, saying that the casting alone has made them completely disinterested in the movie. We haven’t even gotten as much as a set photo of them filming, let alone a trailer or clip! There’s no way to tell at this point how the movie will turn out.

  • http://twitter.com/jackiewhitus Jackie Whitus

I just don’t feel good about her playing the part. I think I may have gotten my heart a little too set on Mae Whitman so now this is huge blow. I just can’t picture her playing the part.

    • Kate

Perhaps Mae Whitman was one of the 250 girls who read for the part, but she simply wasn’t as good as Shailene?

Not saying Mae isn’t a good actress, bc she totally is. But I don’t understand when people are disappointed “their pick” didn’t come on top after such an exhaustive casting search. The producers, director, and casting director clearly covered all their bases and went with who did the best in the auditions and screen tests.

      • http://twitter.com/jackiewhitus Jackie Whitus

Yes, I understand that she may not have been the best, but I think it’s just one of those things where you get your heart set on it so then when it doesn’t work out, even though there was a very small chance of it working out, you can’t help but feel a little disappointed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrick.fincutter Patrick Fincutter

hmmmmmmmmm ok….. I still think that Mae Whitman would have been a much better choice…

  • http://twitter.com/thejasonology Jason L.

I’m kind of disappointed, but maybe that’s because in my head Mia
Wasikowska has always been the perfect Hazel, with Emma Watson and Lily
Collins maybe. Logan Lerman is always Augustus for me, so I hope he gets
    the role.

I’ve never seen “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” but I have
seen “The Descendants” and both characters feel like “opposite Hazel”
to me. Just the edgier, more hormonal side of adolescence. I mean, if
she’s a good actor, I guess she could do it. My only other issue is that
she seems to have a monopoly on all these YA-adaption roles, with
    Divergent and now this.

    • http://twitter.com/AntaraC Antara Chowdhury

Shailene has two YA roles. There are plenty of other YA movies coming out that she’s not in: Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, The Maze Runner, etc. Shai in no way has a monopoly on YA-adaption roles.

  • http://twitter.com/gabysm11 M. Gabriela Sosa

If John Green is happy, I’m happy. He did write the book after all, he knows best.

  • Gia

i hope she’ll be good, but currently, she annoys me terribly.

  • sarasepicdetour

    What a poor choice…

  • nina

  • Lena Rose

I don’t know much about her- i hope she does well!

  • Glaciusx

    This is bullshit.

  • georgina Phelps

I don’t know how I feel about this, but I’m not sure it’s good.

  • plop

  • Cia

Sheesh. This is about how well she acts as Hazel. I swear, most of the pre-casting ideas are based on looks alone. If John says she’s a good Hazel, then she’s a good Hazel. We haven’t seen her act like Hazel because none of her parts have been Hazel. Gosh. I do think it’d be better if they had a different girl play Tris though since movies take a lot of commitment and I’m worried about lack of quality acting from one if they’re both scheduled to be released around the same year. I’m sort of glad I haven’t seen Shailene acting that way I don’t have any biased reaction when I go see the two movies.

  • lorepottter

Well, there is no doubt, this is Shailene’s year

  • Sofia Malik

If John is happy, I’m happy

  • http://megan-conway.blogspot.com/ Megan Conway

I’ll have to see her in the role to really be on board, but if John’s on board with it… *shrugs*

  • http://xyue-mayx.deviantart.com/ Dreamer

This makes me really nervous but I feel slightly better to know that John Green approves of her. I love that she’s enthusiastic about it and that she’s a fan. I haven’t seen much by her so I don’t know much about her acting, but I think she looks fine; all she’ll have to do is cut her hair and she matched they physical description of Hazel.

  • Katie

I’m waiting for some graphic design-savvy person to make a picture of Shailene with Hazel’s page boy haircut! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Stuart/100001006449261 Daniel Stuart

If John is good with it then I will give her a chance. She better work hard and pull an amazing performance off because she has never show the skill to be Hazel in anything I have seen with her and if she ruins it then the fans will tear her apart and her career will be over.

  • TFIOSftw

“that she has a profound understanding of Hazel” How so? I wonder…

  • A.M.Y-A

Casting aside, only Augustus gets to call her Hazel Grace.

  • http://www.facebook.com/erin.yanas Erin Yanas

God I’m going to be sick. I think she’s a horrible actress. I would have rather seen Kristen Stewart in this role…

  • http://twitter.com/aadnama Amanda Douglas

Personally, I am stoked about this.

    1) I love Shailene, and I know that she can act. (Most of you dislike her because of Secret Life, which is hardly fair, because that show is just terrible to begin with.)

    2) If John backs her like he says he does, then who are we to complain? He knows Hazel better than anyone, and if he thinks Shailene is fantastic, then she is fantastic.

    3) I am excited about seeing her in two films, both of which are adaptations of my favorite books.

  • http://twitter.com/StarkidSims Simone

She looks a little like Alexa Vega?

  • Katherine

The people who hate Shailene are probably the same ones who used to hate Jennifer Lawrence…they were wrong about J-Law’s acting ability and I think they’re wrong about Shailene’s. Did you not see the Descendants? She was amazing. Also let’s not forget Shailene was nominated for an Oscar for that role – something that doesn’t happen that often for young adult actresses. All I’m saying is give the girl a break – yeah she got her start on a terrible tv show – but she’s been wonderful in everything she’s done outside of that so leave it alone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1297260009 Elise Hammond

I agree with all your sentiments, but just to clarify, Golden Globe nomination not Oscar nomination.

  • AJgirl

  • http://www.facebook.com/BryBry69 Bryan Ellis

I’m okay with this :) Was she my top choice? No, but she’s a great actress and she looks the part. Plus I have faith in John Green, so I’m definitely in the ballpark that says Woodley is a GREAT choice :D

  • maddy323

Shailene Woodley is like the JJ Abrams of anticipated movie roles.

  • http://twitter.com/Liam_I_Exist Ticket-Less FanGirl

She’s involved with too many projects that I’m attached too. I really don’t see her as any of the roles she has. I have seen many of shailene’s works, and I feel like no matter what kind of character, she makes them seem weak in a way. I just…. She going to play so many characters that I love and she can’t do them all perfectly.

  • YAKnow

I was so excited for this… ugh. Maybe I just need to watch her in something other than Secret Life of the American Teenager-whatever? Can’t wait to see who they cast as Gus!

  • ilfrod

I can see her as Hazel Grace. She’s a fine choice, In my opinion.

  • RYCBAR123

I really hope Joshua Anthony Brand gets Gus :D

    • a nerdfighter

Oh god. I haven’t seen his acting, but I think that boy was born for Gus. He is actually EXACTLY how I pictured him to look!! :DDDDD

  • nerdfighter

I’m fine with whoever they cast. If John likes it, the actors and actresses picked must sure as hell be good. He knows the characters more than anybody. I just hope that the BOOK doesn’t get ruined. Take the Hunger Games, for example. I read the book when it first came out, and when people realized that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth would be in it, 11-year old fangirls went, watched it, and pretended to absolutely love it until people stopped talking about it. If that happens with The Fault in Our Stars, which I read and preordered in January 2012 when it came out and then became one of my favorite books, I will have nothing to say.

  • nerdfighter

  • nerdfighter

this was probably fan made, but i mean c’mon. this looks so much like how i pictured gus to look it’s a bit scary.

    • jessica

wow. that actually is kinda weird. i pictured augustus exactly like that too. perfect on the outside, but a softie on the inside. IM SO GLAD THAT I FOUND AN ACTOR THAT LOOKS LIKE HOW I IMAGINED GUS!

  • crbarra97

I realize I’m a little late to the party here, but I think that 1. If John Green believes that Woodley can do our beloved Hazel justice, then everyone owes it to him to give her a chance and 2. If she’s as good an actress as her getting all these roles would prove her to be, then her acting will be so diverse that it won’t matter that the characters share the same face.

  • crbarra97

And only Augustus can call Hazel “Hazel Grace”.
