Team StarKid’s big news today is obviously the long-awaited YouTube release of A Very Potter Senior Year, but the group has used trailer videos within the release to also announce their next projects – a new parody musical, Twisted, and an original graphic novel called Quicksand Jack.

The playlist for A Very Potter Senior Year features sneak-peek announcement videos for each of the projects interspersed between portions of the musical’s first act.

For those who know their musical theatre, even the imagery here may have elicited a gasp of joy from you. Team StarKid’s new musical, Twisted – The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier is an obvious parody melding of Disney’s Aladdin and the Tony-Award winning musical Wicked, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire.

If you’re unfamiliar with Wicked, it is an extremely clever prequel to the classic The Wizard Of Oz, which focuses on Elphaba, a green-skinned girl who we know as the Wicked Witch of the West. It is a complete alteration of perspective and a sympathetic explanation for the events of The Wizard of Oz. It’s doubtful that anyone who knows Wicked will look at The Wizard Of Oz through quite the same eyes ever again.

In creating Twisted, Team StarKid seem to have taken this concept and applied it to Aladdin, where we will see Jafar as our protagonist. Perhaps Twisted will even change the way we see Aladdin in the future! The timing is rather perfect, with the Wicked movie finally going into production and Aladdin making the leap to Broadway.

Quicksand Jack

Moving to a new medium for StarKid, Quicksand Jack is a new seven-part graphic novel from writers Nick and Matt Lang. It will be illustrated by Jen Lang and Teia Smith. Quicksand Jack is a completely original venture, which makes it a little harder to theorise about, but it appears to be a Wild West story, possibly in a mining town, and possibly with zombies. The video teases: “There is something evil beneath the town of Brimstone. Seven will kill to protect it. He will fight to destroy it.” The video features character portraits, presumably of the seven evil protectors, and a look at the gun-toting eponymous Jack. Quicksand Jack is due to be released this summer.

What are your thoughts on these two new projects from StarKid Productions?

ACCCCK! Cannot contain my excitement of seeing Starkid’s take on Wicked. And Aladdin too. but mostly Wicked!!!!!!!!! I hope a lot of elements of both come through.
(There may have been weird strangled squeals of joy emitting from my house – hope i havent freaked out the neighbours)
And Jen and Teia are Nick and Matt’s sister and sister-in-law, right? and they had done some fo the artwork on the merch?
eeek….too much SK excitement for one day. we get nothing for ages and all this at once?

    • jharris/fangirllove

Agreed, Jen and Teia are Nick and Matt’s sister & sister-in-law. They do tee shirt designs, and help with any art projects that come up.

Awesome! The only downside will be the lack of Darren’s lovely face and voice. Although I love you, Glee, and I know you pay him well enough, eff you. Starkid over Glee any day.

    • oblyviate

we can only hope that the LA contingent stay involved… and Darren can compose some more songs from his glee trailer, like with Starship….

      • Marie

Obviously. If not. . .oh man. Watching this made me realize how much HAPPIER Darren was with Starkid. He certainly seems more passionate about this project anyway. I don’t want the show I have such a love/hate relationship with to get in the way of Darren’s joy.

        • oblyviate

i know what you mean. and i can imagine he would crazy passionate about a disney-esque adaption – particularly one with alan menken’s music. Wouldnt glee have finished filming for the year by that point, for summer? does anyone know how long darren is contractually bound to the show?

    • Mel

Is it at all possible that he could actually be more involved than just writing? It will be in July, Glee is done filming in May, and they haven’t announced a summer tour yet. Just a thought, and it probably won’t happen, but I’d like to think it could :)

When I heard about Aladdin coming to Broadway, a friend and I had a conversation of what a Starkid version of it would be like and which Starkids would play which roles. Looks like I now can predict the future!

  • Kavitha

Ahh I was not expecting this when watching AVPSY so both of these announcements were great! I’m excited!!!

I can’t even describe how much I love StarKid <3

  • georgina Phelps

These both sound really cool, but I can’t get excited yet. I just need a couple of days to mourn the AVP series.

SO. FREAKING. EXCITED! I love how they just slipped it in between AVPSY as if we wouldn’t properly notice it. I love Aladdin so much, and Jafar is one of my fav Disney villains. Can’t wait!

Did anyone else notice that the beginning of AVPSY’s Always Dance is very similar to Wicked’s Sentimental Man?

    • Ali

The last few lines of the first verse of ‘Dance Again’ is essentially ‘Wonderful.’

      • cynthiacaridad

That’s the one!! thanks for clearing it up for me. :)

  • remy

Wait, I’m sorry, but can you link to an article where it actually says the Wicked movie is going into production?? Because there have been rumours about it becoming a movie FOR YEARS but I haven’t heard any actual concrete developments on that front.
