The Vampire Diaries returns tonight with “Bring it On,” and here you can see Ian Somerhalder preview Elena’s new reality.
In the last episode of the show, Elena struggled to deal with the death of her brother Jeremy, and to temporarily stave off the grief, Damon made her turn off her humanity.
“It crushes her. It destroys her,” Somerhalder tells Zap2It in a video interview.
He also previews Damon and Elena’s relationship – if there even is one. “Can they sustain a relationship?” he asks. “Or — not a relationship, they are in a relationship, but can they sustain a romance? It’s hard to sustain anything in Mystic Falls, except, like, a drinking habit. Those seem to be pretty sustainable.”
However, there are perks to this new humanity-less Elena too. Speaking to E! Online, Somerhalder says, “now she’s a badass and she can crack jokes.” And for a while at least, the Salvatore brothers can stop worrying so much about her safety, because as Somerhalder explains, “every time she walks out of the house we’re not biting our nails thinking someone is going to come kill her. She can fight for herself.”
Finally, Somerhalder also did a Vampire Diaries Bite video with TV Guide:
In the clip, he reaffirms the point that, “it’s super cool to see this super empowered woman where the boys aren’t scared she’s going to walk out the door and get killed, because she’s a badass chick who can hold her own.”
He also hints at what Damon thinks about this whole thing, saying that, “I really want her to be my hot sexy vampire girlfriend, but I really don’t want her killing everybody.”
If you want more Ian Somerhalder (and who doesn’t?), the actor will be taking part in a livestream chat on HuffPost Live later today, at 3pm ET.
The Vampire Diaries 4×16 “Bring it On” airs tonight at 8/7c on The CW.
