In what may be a huge leap forward for film and crowd-sourcing, Veronica Mars actress Kristen Bell says she and Warner Bros. have agreed to a Veronica Mars movie… under one big condition.
UPDATE: The goal of $2 million has been hit!
Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has struck a deal with the actress and co-star Rob Thomas whereby if fans raise $2 million in 30 days for a Veronica Mars movie, the studio will put it into production. The movie would be released in 2014 for a limited time and then live forever through digital outlets like iTunes and video on demand.
“Warner Bros. had previously determined that a film with a bigger budget and a conventional marketing plan was too expensive and not viable for the studio,” reports Entertainment Weekly, who had an exclusive interview with Bell.
At the time of this writing, over $90,000 has already been raised for the project. In this video they shot for the Kickstarter, we see the cast promote the project:
By pledging, you’ll also receive a reward based on how much you contribute. For example, those who pledge $10 or more will be sent a copy of the film’s script on release day. For those with a serious amount of cash lying around, you can donate $10,000 for a speaking role in the movie (you’ll play a waiter).
Fans have from now until April 12, 2013 to raise $2 million. If you pledge money, your money will only be taken if they raise the full amount.
This type of idea could potentially set a new precedent for how film projects get off the ground. We wouldn’t be surprised if the $2 million is raised long before the mid-April deadline. Head to Kickstarter to donate!
