The peacock network made a couple surprise changes to their schedule today. Most interesting is that new episodes of Smash will now air on Saturdays.

The move from Tuesday to a weak spot in the weekly release schedule suggests NBC is accepting the show’s fate without canceling it. Beginning April 6, Smash moves to Saturdays at 9 PM. They say in a statement that they will air all 17 episodes. Smash’s move to Saturday is in light of low ratings since the second season premiered last month.

NBC made the following other changes:
- The Celebrity Apprentice will expand to two hours beginning April 14 (9 – 11 PM ET) through the end of May.
- The Voice will air encore episodes on Sunday, March 31 and Sunday, April 7 (7 – 10 PM ET).
- The New Normal will air its one-hour season finale Tuesday, April 2 (9 PM ET) following The Voice.
- Ready For Love will take Smash’s place beginning April 9, airing from 9 – 11 PM ET following The Voice.
- Whitney’s one-hour season finale will air Wednesday, March 27 (8 – 9 PM ET).
- Go On moves to Thursdays on April 4 and April 11 (9:30 – 10 PM ET). The latter episode is the season finale.

At this point, it’s safe to assume Smash is cancelled. The major changes they made in between seasons 1 and 2 were effectively not enough to save the show despite a strong promotional campaign.

And GLEE is doing well…. seriously……….

  • RussellTurner

Noooo :( I hope it’s not cancelled. Honestly though, Jennifer Hudson’s character on the show was so pointless and so unnecessary. The show is finally though getting interesting.. fingers crossed it’s not going to be cancelled!

With the talk that’s been going on all season this is not a surprising at all.
Saturdays are the kiss of death for television.
It’s shame because this just found it place this season, I’m upset to see it go.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aaccss Alex Smith

Fridays are the kiss of death eventually. Saturday is just DOA.

      • http://www.facebook.com/dianavparker Diana Parker

Well Love Boat and Fantasy Island thrived on Saturdays :)

I watch season 1 and never came back for season 2, I wasn’t feeling it anymore the last few episodes of season 1 where not good.

    • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

My exact thoughts. Also this show seems way too expensive to produce compared to the ad revenue it’s probably not able to sell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1560177295 Kristin LaMoure

at least watch the clips from some of the songs this year, on Hulu. The new show in Smash is stupid, but the bombshell stuff is AMAZING!

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

Well at least it’s not officially cancelled. There’s a small amount of hope.

  • Mand1591

ITS AMAZING THIS SEASON they can’t let it go :(

  • M

I don’t understand. The Celebrity Apprentice is always 2 hours long??

    • jkredwine

It’s quite foolish. I don’t know why they’re squeezing the episodes in. Just let it run into summer. I don’t think the average viewer has the attention span for 2 hours a week. Not that I care about Trump’s bloated and overdone competition show anyway. But it’s so sad to see the once-great NBC of the late 90s-early 00s flail like this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Kinkead/759877420 Andrew Kinkead

Ya it is two hours.. that is really weird!

  • http://www.facebook.com/katharine.smith.73 Katharine Smith

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

and its doing so much better now!

  • MYPond

Smash is a great show… i believe it had a slow start but it finally is getting great! how can’t people understand… boo

  • http://www.facebook.com/robert.marar Robert Marar

I love the show and even accept all the little problems and quirks with
the story development and character flaws. It’s unfortunate that the
show developers have had sooo much drama behind the scenes (too many
chefs in the kitchen). The show has great potential and just needs to
find its voice and audience but as it looks right now it’s on its way to
cancellation. Frankly this show would have been better with a little
more edge/darker and dirtier like the entertainment industry really is
and placed on a pay network like HBO or showtime. They try to be edgy
with the undertone of drugs, sex, betrayal but it just comes across as
fluff. We would have seen at least 6 seasons had they went in that
direction. Oh well, I’ll take it for what it is and enjoy whatever
little time I have left with this Broadway baby :).

    • Penny Rosepointe

AMEN! Have really been enjoying this show. So sad.

    Can we do a Kickstarter?

    • http://hypable.com John Thrasher

      No, let it die!

  • Dra

Surprisingly moved? The show’s ratings have been shocking and marked for cancellation since the season 2 premier. Still disappointing….

  • http://twitter.com/HaileeVaunWiest Hailee-Vaun Wiest

NOOO!!!! i loved this show :( so sad that it will be cancelled after this season.

  • Elphaba Thropp

I would have been fine with this last season, but this season is just getting good for me! I really wish we had cable so I could help a tiny bit with the ratings (I’m relying solely on the internet to watch any and all tv shows right now), but I suppose this was bound to happen.

  • Crazy-Eight23

What’s kinda ironic is in the last episode, Ivy was crying about the new show she’s in saying “It’s terrible, really bad.” I just thought of that when I read this and the comments..

  • Jenn Riehl

I love the show…maybe if they put it on another night like Wednesday! There is nothing on Wed nights…. :(

    • fortyeightgirl

Nothing on Wednesdays except, oh, Idol and Survivor. Both of them are clearly past their prime but are still powerhouses. Smash isn’t a bad show but wouldn’t stand a chance on Wednesdays. Not much on NBC could except maybe Revolution.

      • http://twitter.com/NoreenMcGowan Noreen McGowan

Nashville is on Wednesday’s at 10. Clearly better than Smash, even though I enjoy Smash as well.

  • Heather

I love this show but even I want to turn it off during the opening credits…one of the most annoying sounds I have ever heard

  • Vanj203

I wish Smash season 2 had “The Voice” for a lead in early on. When “The Voice” returns on March 25th Smash may be seeing good ratings from that lead-in. Unfortunately, it will be too late since the decision to move Smash to Saturday has already been made. I’m going to miss this show soooo much. :(

  • Random NBC watcher

So…. When is Parenthood coming back?

  • SweetP

  • Sam

The only reason they’re even being this nice and not letting it die immediately is because of the big names involved. Ugh it’s just getting good of course.

  • Carla

Smash is an interesting series, is a nice blend of drama and humor with reality. If other countries (like mine, Brazil) were also presenting the series at the same time, and if the opinion of all fans (or series of isolated artists who work in it) was considered, the third season would have sketch!

  • AleshiaaaaaR

They cant cancel Smash, is one of the best shows on tv and I love it. I especially don’t want to stop seeing Megan Hilty on my screen every week.

  • dino1077

I Agree, season 2 of Smash isn’t officially here in the UK yet, but I’m hooked, this is one of the best series I’ve seen in ages, fingers crossed NBC realise what people the world over want and keep this fantastic show on air.

  • sampcfl

How can you cancel a show with good story lines and talent and leave a garbage show like “Glee” (gay) on the air.

  • jobo

I’m sad but it was inevitable, when they killed the only plot-line which ensures show’s longevity: the unrequited love. Jack Davenport has effectively cornered the market on smouldering angst-riddled love for someone who doesn’t care much for him. The season 1 ended as if Karen started to notice Derek in a more positive light and opening show of season 2 had “almost” kiss for the two of them – then “deus ex machina” high-schooler with a scowl shows up, belts out couple of cookiecutter ballads and Karen is smitten beyond reason? I didn’t understand that at all. I liked the dramaturg, Eurythmics cover and that Ivy moved on to another major project, but everything else (including the return of evil Jerry) just seems forced and boring.

  • pookie

this is my favorite show on TV!!!!!!!!!! THIS CANT BE HAPPENING.

  • Ann

I love SMASH !!!! Only TV show I watch!!!!!
Please NBC – keep SmASH for another season

  • http://www.facebook.com/angela.cornelius.5 Angela Cornelius

I’m so sad! I was just talking with a friend of mine and we both agreed on how much we love this show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dianavparker Diana Parker

It’s so sad that shows like Smash are cancelled so quickly and crap reality shows like insipid the Kardashians go on and on an on….and Splash in the number one show in the country now…SERIOUSLY AMERICA WTF????

  • Charm

    I adore this show!!!

  • Lori

cannot believe they are moving Smash to Saturday? Really and putting on some show about Love no wonder NBC has such low rating :(

  • Krjg3

I love this show why are all the good shows in danger of being canceled where are they getting these ratings because everyone I know loves smash

  • Cate Neilson

It was playing against Justified–what did they expect?!! So now Justified is off and they moved it. Not Fair. Great show, even GREATER music.

  • divachick

I cant believe they cancel all the good shows and keep.all the STUPID shows
    SMASH is a good show

  • http://www.facebook.com/sandy.f.mcloughlin Sandy Frank McLoughlin

Smash is a fabulous show! They keep a lot of shows that are CRAP and take this one off. Let’s just dummy down the population instead of showing true entertainment! What is happening to what people find as good entertainment!!!

  • Johanna Lönnermark

I love Smash! It’s original and the songs/singers are awesome!! Don’t cancel! The show is awesome!

  • picaboo

    yeye it is over…

  • picaboo

actually i was insensitive sorry. but i really wasn’t a fan

  • http://www.facebook.com/brad.jordan.9406 Brad Jordan

How can we save smash ? I know tons of people that watch it, but they don’t count because no one i know has a Nielsen box . No one i know knows anyone with one, do they really exist ? lol

  • Lois Freeman

I absolutely LOVE this show! It’s my most looked forward to show of the week! I’m definitely hooked. Can’t believe they would even think of cancelling it. So sad…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1560177295 Kristin LaMoure

If Smash get’s cancelled and American Idol stays, I’m ….we’ll I don’t know what I’m gonna do, but I’m gonna get mad at somebody.

  • Alp

Please don’t cancel it NBC! I was telling my husband if either show they are working on were on Broadway I would love to go see them.

  • CLester

If you don’t want to see SMASH canceled you can go here: https://www.facebook.com/DontCancelSmash

  • rita schmitz

I could see it but was still in denial and hoping it wasnt true until it moved to saturdays-yikes! I’ll certainly miss Katherine mcphee’s voice which is one of the main draws for me:’( I could listen to her voice forever

  • Captiosus

All the people yelling “Don’t cancel” or “millions watched” are oblivious to reality. Smash’s premier tanked and each episode tanked further. By the time they announced they were moving it to Saturday, it was getting less viewers than 1600 Penn… 1600 PENN! NBC’s “adult Glee” experiment failed. Good riddance.

  • yogananny

This is one of my favorite shows. Can’t believe they moved it and put on another reality show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/heather.borrego Heather Moreno Borrego

I am a full time student and am actually looking to see Smash on Saturday nights at 9. I can catch it with out having to DVR it and not worry about being too tired. I think that this time slot will surprise everyone. There is too much going on during the week with other shows any way. Vampire Diaries and Beauty and the Beast on the CW take up my Thursday’s, Teen Wolf on MTV is about to do the same on Mondays I believe. I don’t know, I think that Smash is going to be fine on Saturday’s. I pray that it proves everyone wrong.

  • CAG

I love this show. I can’t get enough of watching it. I hope it’s not cancelled.

  • Lynda

Love Smash. Let’s keep it alive.

  • Sonja

Smash is definitely my favorite show and I’m not ready to let it go. It’s hard to find great series these days because TV is just full of stupid reality shows. If Smash gets officially cancelled, I think I’m going to cry. Seriously.

  • soccerboy

    very dissappointed

  • Dena

This is completely ridiculous! Smash is my favorite show, and I only have 2 favorite shows this and shameless. Smash is getting good and now they are cancelling it, why can’t NBC just play another season and see how it goes !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ruth

Save Smash. I love it. Apprentice stinks get rid of that reality shows need to go

  • 4theloveofthemusic

This sucks. I love this show. It’s one of my favorite shows to watch. Way better than Glee. Why does network tv get rid of all the great shows? I want to buy the Season Two Music Soundtrack of SMASH. Is there one?
