The Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals is launching (sort of) in April, and now the cast and crew have begun filming the backdoor pilot episode.
Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) will be leaving Mystic Falls for New Orleans, where they’ll (The CW willing) star in a brand new drama series all about the Original vampires and their friends.
While the show won’t begin airing until fall 2013 – if it’s picked up for a full season by The CW – The Vampire Diaries episode airing April 25 (4×20) will serve as The Originals‘ backdoor pilot.
After several teasing tweets from Joseph Morgan about the script, one of the show’s producers confirms today that the episode has now begun shooting:
Was today the first day of shooting on the #TVD spinoff ep? Warner Bros. won’t let me tell you. But if it was, how exciting would that be?!

Morgan confirms this in a roundabout way, and continues his low-key #beoriginal Twitter campaign to drum up fan excitement:
Day one. Forget what you know, or what you think you know #beoriginal

The episode will be directed by Daniel Grismer, who has shared the following two pictures from the set of the show (posted on Zap2It), showing the cast getting ready for a scene:
