Actress Emma Watson is in very early talks to take on the role of Cinderella for Disney.

We had learned late last month that Kenneth Branagh replaced Mark Romanek as director. The film’s script is by Chris Weitz. Cinderella has already cast Cate Blanchett in the role of the Evil Stepmother.

Disney wants to begin shooting this fall and release next year. It’s the latest in a line of live action fairytales: Alice in Wonderland, Oz the Great and Powerful (out next month), and Maleficent (out March 2014) have been highly publicized and so far successful.

Those who’ve been following Watson’s career know she is already attached to play Belle in a live action Beauty and the Beast directed by Guillermo Del Toro. The actress had said in a recent interview that they’d shoot this year. If that’s still the case, she’ll have a busy several months portraying princesses.

Watson can next be seen in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, which we learned today will hit theaters this June.

Can you see Watson in the role of Cinderella? Remember that talks are very early at this point (Watson is not the first actress Disney went to for this role and may not be the last), so don’t get too excited just yet. With that said, we think she has the looks and the charm to make a perfect Disney princess. We just can’t imagine seeing her as both Belle and Cinderella unless their releases were spread wide enough apart.

Branagh played Professor Lockhart in the Harry Potter films. Watson played Hermione Granger. Their previous professional relationship may help this deal come together ever so slightly.

Thanks, Variety.

  • Hi

If Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson are in a movie together I am there.

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

Yay. I’d like to see her singing with a bunch of CGI mice. She’s used to CG. Very interesting.

  • Malea

I love Emma, but in both Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella…? Isn’t that a bit much? :/

    • http://twitter.com/MusicandHouse J

I agree. Espeically since one of the things people love so much about the character of Hermione is that she was so very anti-Disney princess and fought instead of waiting for her prince. Not like these films would ever overshadow her role in Harry Potter, but I don’t like these conflicting images.

      • antonia31

I mean I agree with you- but obviously they’ll update cinderella so that it is more feminist. Just like the Broadway musical that is opening next week- they rewrote the whole book for the show so that she saves the prince yada yada.

      • Annie

Well, one of the joys of acting is trying to avoid being type-cast and getting to act differing characters. I think I’m a bit thrilled, but whatever floats your boat.

      • Disneyfan01

Not all disney princesses sat there waiting for their prince (Also disney cinderella was assertive in her Own way)

    • DylanM

Emma Watson in MULAN coming 2018.

  • ravenclaw1991

Huh Cinderella AND Beauty and the Beast? That sounds pretty awesome. I’ve never seen the original versions of either of them, so this would definitely get me to watch them.

  • David

I don’t like the idea of having Emma playing both Belle and Cinderella, it wouldn’t be great for her since that she’s trying to get a name for herself in non-fantasy films. I think that Evanna would fit to play Cinderella. She has the looks, she looks much more younger than Emma, and she has the blonde hair,

    • http://daydreamsandwhispers.tumblr.com/ Hermione Granger

Oh my god that would be amazing!

  • Winkyxx

Emma as a blonde?? eerrrr no. Sorry Emma, not this one!

    • http://www.facebook.com/Krys831 Krystol Grayson

Why does Cinderella have to be a blonde? Haven’t you ever seen “Cinderella” with Brandy? Nowhere in any of the Cinderella stories does it say that she is a blonde. That is just ridiculous.

      • Winkyxx

Im just saying I don’t see her as a blonde…

        • http://www.facebook.com/Krys831 Krystol Grayson

She was pretty darn blonde in OotP… just saying. Wasn’t the whole fandom in kind of an uproar because she she became more and more blonde with every passing movie?

      • Samantha

Yes but this is by Disney, and I would assume they’d go with their original design for her, or maybe they’ll shock us all and make her a red head :P

As much as I love Disney, I feel a little against the live action remakes of the animated movies. I feel like it’s taking away from the classics; kids will grow up watching these instead of what we saw. This generation is already more familiar with Johnny Depp’s version of Alice in Wonderland instead of the 1950′s animated one (a better version, in my opinion, but of course that’s just me), and I really don’t want them to move forward with the times…just to move forward with the times and get the big name actors.

    • DylanM

I feel like they’re just desperate to keep making movies and they have no other big budget ideas, so they’re just going back to what they know are safe bets for people to see and “like” in theaters.

  • upper_westsider

I hope she does both. A chance to work with Cate Blanchett and Kenneth Branagh? They’re both brilliant! GO EMMA!

  • http://twitter.com/akacj7 Caroline J.

she’s a disney princess in my heart, but too much disney in real life

  • WeasleyWrock

I love Kenneth Branagh as a director (like in Much Ado about Nothing), and this is going to be fantastic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maria-Wang/542480760 Maria Wang

She was a princess in Tale of Despereaux too, albeit an animated one

I’d always pictured (blonde) Jennifer Lawrence as Cinderella. Am I the only one?

    • Amazonqueen27

That is actually a really good casting idea. I second that!

    • Sam

      Nah… Jennifer doesn’t seem very “princessy”…

      • luckyleo

If the photo of Jennifer Lawrence falling at the oscars and holding her head isn’t a perfect shot of Cinderella on the steps of the palace i don’t know what is.

        • Sam

Yes… but that is just one MOMENT in the story!! -_- Also, I was referring to her personality… Also based on all the roles she’s taken to date, I don’t see her choosing to play a Disney princess. But I guess you never know..

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

To me, Jennifer has the personality and traits of a princess: a down to earth girl with humble beginnings.
And that’s the best part about acting, if you are a good actor you can pull of being whoever you want to be. Even a princess.

          • SpiritWitch120

What’s her personality got to do with it. The point of acting is to portray another so her personality has no part in this.

  • Tom

The Guillermo del Toro “Beauty and the Beast” project is nowhere near a sure thing. Del Toro is working on MANY other possible films as his next project and his BATB isn’t exactly high up on that list. He has an animated Pinocchio with Christopher Walken, as well as a film called Crimson Peak starring Emma Stone. His “Beauty and the Beast” is still in very early script stages, with no scheduled start for pre-production.

    • Checkergeek

Q: What’s happening with Beauty and the Beast?

A: Guillermo del Toro, the director, has just finished editing his last film and is working on the script and pre-production for Beauty and the Beast.

  • Katie

Yes to Belle. No to Cinderella. But obviously I support if she decides to do them both or whatever, I just think it’s a bit much.

    • Katie

      *I’ll

  • http://twitter.com/Super_Lulu1 Lupita

I say yes to Emma as Belle but no to her as Cinderella. Personally I think Jennifer Lawrence should be Cinderella :D

  • Samantha

I have to say she has a much better ‘look’ for beauty and the beast, she is a classic dark beauty but I always imagine Cinderella as more fair and innocent looking…

  • Anonymous

Ugh, the girl who ruined Hermione (granted, it was probably not all her fault, but I’m afraid that’s how I still see her) in film set to ruin TWO famous fairytale princesses? Really?

    • Sam

Ummm… she didn’t “ruin” Hermione. She was great improved hugely with each movie! Did you watch the last three HP movies?!

    • Emmafan

      1. No one is talking about Hp 2. You’re overblown wrong 3. no one agrees with you so just take your hateful self some where far far away; you troll

  • NightStrike91

I am amazed that so many do not realise that Disney did not invent these stories. They disneyfied the original stories. I might be wrong, but these live-action adaptions are not going to be remakes of the Disney versions, are they? Well then, go for it Emma!

    • luckyleo

Agreed. I think it’s worth pointing out that Del Toro’s Beauty and the Beast is for Warner Bros., so it technically has nothing to do with the Disney version of the Beauty and the Beast. There are a couple of different sources Del Toro could pull from that would make his Belle (if that’s even going to be her name) completely different from a Disney princess.

  • Tessa

Wasn’t Saoirse Ronan supposed to be cast as Cinderella?

  • daff

I hate to be one of “those” fans but after seeing her in Goblet of Fire she would be perfect as a Disneyesque Princess!!

  • Alex

    im really confused.
Hypable says Emma is in early talks about the role, another source says she’s in final talks…..
    So which one is it?

And personally i see her fit belle much better (appearance wise)

Hope that one doesn’t get scrapped in favor of Cinderella

  • hazel

I would be fine with her as Belle or Cinderella, as I think should would do a great job in both (especially as Belle), but I not sure I’m a fan of her being in both parts so close together. I think it would just be strange.

  • asdf

She should only be able to do one or the other. If she does both Belle and Cinderella then when you think of either one, all you’ll think of is Emma. Each character needs to be played by different people so that the confusion wont come in and if they ever did do a movie with all of them, two characters wouldnt be the same person.

  • Allison Shannon

‘already cast Kate Blanchett in the role’

    It’s Cate.

  • morsmordre79

I’d be okay with Emma portraying both simply because they’ll be completely different movies. Unless things have changed, del Toro’s “Beauty and the Beast” is going to be more like the original story, not the child-friendly Disney version. The live-action Cinderella, however, will be produced by Disney, so it’s likely to be more on the fluffy side. The styles will be completely different.

  • Jill

I love Emma Watson but I think Jennifer Lawrence would be perfect for this role. I love both of these girls but if it is Emma, so be it. I just can’t really picture her right away as Cinderella like I can Jennifer Lawrence.
