BBC’s new family drama Atlantis, helmed by former Merlin and Misfits producers, has cast its first lead character.

Now that Merlin has finished, the BBC is looking to launch a new Saturday night family drama which retells classic myths and legends for a modern audience.

This time it’s not Arthurian legends, however, but rather Greek mythology: Atlantis follows the young Jason who arrives in the magical, fantastical (but ultimately doomed) city where he encounters familiar figures from the myths we know so well.

Now, TV Wise has learned that actor Robert Emms (who can also be seen in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2) has been cast as a young Pythagoras, a famous mathematician and philosopher. If you think the name sounds familiar, you’re right: most of us have probably had to learn his theorem in school!

Atlantis is set to begin production in Wales and Morocco in April, and has so far been optioned for one 13-episode season. It is created by Misfits showrunner Howard Overman, while Merlin creators Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps serve as executive producers.

No actor has yet been announced for Jason, but we shall keep you posted. While we are sure Merlin fans will not be happy to see their series replaced, it will be interesting to see how Capps, Murphy and Overman will spin the classic story of Atlantis into a family drama.

When I saw this yesterday, I couldn’t believe it. Of all ancient Greeks, real or not, they go for Pythagoras? That’s certainly interesting. I just hope they don’t put math into the show. That would be a bit boring.

They are definitely not going to be able to replace Merlin, but they can try and I’m sure Atlantis is going to be good.

I would love it if this ends up being an “educational” series where they’re gonna try to teach us all about triangles and right angles. I would LOVE IT. Because that would be hilarious.

Now that you mention it, that would be hilarious! I could see it now! “Today, we are going to learn about Pythagorean Theorem with the man himself. Pythagoras!” or something like that. That statement sounded much funnier in my head.

Jason: “Hey Pyth, what are you doing?”
Pythagoras: “Jason, I’m glad you asked. Come over here and take a look at this triangle I drew.”
Jason: “Wow that is so cool! How did you do that?!”
Pythagoras: “Well, see, I have this whole theorem…….”

I can see it now. ;)

I love that! I hope something similar to that happens in the show. It would be the best thing ever.. Oh god, I’m such a nerd!

Pythagoras wasn’t just a mathematician, but a philosopher and mystic, which probably makes a him a bit like Merlin.

I hope they discuss the part in which Jason abandons Medea and behaves like a douchebag.

I haven’t yet seen Merlin or Misfits but I hear they’re great shows so this sounds promising.

Oh you should definitely watch both. They’re amazing.. I mean, Misfits kind of went a little downhill in series 4, but I’m hoping, if they come back for series 5, it gets better again. Merlin is the most amazing thing you will ever see in your entire life, possibly. I guess its a matter of opinion! :)
