Showtime’s flagship show, Dexter, has received 5 nominations in the upcoming 39th Saturn Awards, but will Dexter hold off the competition?

The Saturn Awards are quite an exclusive group to be nominated for as The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror only recognise the very best television shows of these genres, and it’s with pleasure we can announce that Dexter has been nominated for a total of 5 awards.

Dexter has been a huge television favourite for 7 years now, and having already picked up 5 wins at the Saturn Awards since 2006, the crew behind Dexter are surely wanting to put their three year dry spell behind them after last claiming a Saturn Award back in 2009 for Julie Benz’s win in the Best Supporting Actress Role in a Television Series.

Dexter has been nominated for Best Cable Television Series, Best Television Actor (Michael C. Hall), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Carpenter) and two nominations for Dexter have fallen in the Best Guest Starring Role in a Series, with Yvonne Strahovski and Ray Stevenson competing for that accolade.

And, with 5 nominations in the bag, surely Dexter will pick up at least one of these awards? It’s going to be tough, no doubt.

Dexter will go up against American Horror StoryLeverageTrue Blood as well as two nominations from AMC in the form of The Killing and The Walking Dead. The interesting exclusion here is Breaking Bad, which has been one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time. How could the Saturn Awards leave out Breaking Bad? That’s good news for Dexter though, as The Walking Dead are Dexter‘s biggest rivals in this category.

Although Michael C. Hall has taken the award for Best Actor back in Dexter‘s debut season in 2006, he hasn’t taken it since at the Saturn Awards. He’ll be looking over his shoulder for the brilliant Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and Andrew Lincoln of The Walking Dead who in recent years have delivered some of the most compelling acting performances of this generation’s television blockbusters. Will Michael C. Hall edge them?

Alike Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter has also won the Best Supporting Actress award back in 2008. Carpenter gave one of her strongest performances as Lt. Debra Morgan in season 7 of Dexter and we expect Carpenter to challenge heavily against an impressive opposition. Carpenter’s rivals for the award are Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad, Laurie Holden of The Walking Dead, Jessica Lange of American Horror Story, Beth Riesgraf of Leverage and Sarah Carter and Falling Skies. Once again, this award will be too close to call as each of these actresses performances have been breathtaking to say the least. If Carpenter comes out on top, it’ll be a credit to her as Jessica Lange is most likely the favourite of the category after picking up an Emmy for her performance in the first season of American Horror Story. Keep a close eye on this category. “It meant a lot” last time according to Carpenter.

Dexter‘s final two nominations lie in the Best Guest Starring Role in a Series category with Yvonne Strahovski and Ray Stevenson filling 2 of the allocated 5 nominee slots. It’s good odds for Dexter. Yvonne Strahovski sent pulses racing for all the right reasons as Hannah McKay in season 7, whereas Ray Stevenson sent pulses racing for all the wrong reasons. Stevenson was the antagonist of season 7, and will be remembered as one of the best enemies Dexter has faced yet.

The chances are looking good for Dexter at the upcoming 39th Saturn Awards, but Dexter is facing stiff competition from some of the best television ever made in Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead who are also up for a plethora of awards. Dexter has had a good record here at the Saturn Awards, but the last few years haven’t been too kind for them, but the resurrection of the series after a thrilling seventh season will do them every favour it possibly could.

How many awards will Dexter walk away with? Could Dexter even make a complete sweep in all 4 categories? Or are they doomed to live in the shadow of its rivals?

The 39th Annual Saturn Awards will be presented at a ceremony during June.

Sweetness. They deserve it all, even if they are going to have heavy competition.

If they’re covering sci-fi, fantasy and horror only, then why is Breaking Bad nominated for anything?
