Earlier this week we shared surprising news from Scholastic: The paperback Harry Potter books in the United States will be released with new covers designed by Kazu Kibuishi.

Now we’re learning a bit more, if Barnes & Noble’s product listings are to be believed.

UPDATE: Scholastic and editor Arthur Levine tell us that the “bonus material” is “still being worked out.”

UPDATE 2: There is “no strict laydown date” for these books in September, says Scholastic. We still hope they’ll hit on September 1 to time with the new Hogwarts term.

The massive book seller has the revamped Harry Potter series debuting on September 1. Sound familiar? That’s the date Hogwarts term begins every year. While this date is not confirmed by Scholastic (yet), we hope it’s final because the publisher could use that specific date to promote “new term” and “new covers.” “A new year at Hogwarts, with new covers!”

Equally interesting, Barnes & Noble says each of the books has “bonus material in the back.” There are no further details, and we’ve reached out to Scholastic for confirmation, but this has us speculating already. Could it be material we’ve already seen? Material from within Pottermore? Or J.K. Rowling’s site? Or could it be new information that’s never been released before?

The retail prices are as follows (these are before retailer discounts):

- Sorcerer’s Stone: $12.99
- Chamber of Secrets: $12.99
- Prisoner of Azkaban: $12.99
- Goblet of Fire: $14.99
- Order of the Phoenix: $14.99
- Half-Blood Prince: $14.99
- Deathly Hallows: $16.99
- Box set: $100.00

The box set also has a unique feature: “The box itself is beautifully designed with new artwork by Kazu Kibuishi, and the books create a gorgeous, magical vista when the spines are lined up together.”

It looks like we will get additional artwork on the box set, in addition to the seven new covers.

All in all, we’re going to be treated to a lot of new Harry Potter material this September. At this time, only the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone cover has been released.

  • Matthew Goldenberg

Ugh, do they really want us to buy these new covers just for a small portion of supposedly new material?

  • http://twitter.com/MusicandHouse J

I really hope the bonus material is from Pottermore or something worthless that I’m not interested in. I already have. All the books and I’m very attatched to the originals. Adding “bonus content” sounds like a cheap gimmick to get fans to by a whole second set of books.

  • http://twitter.com/noesunacuenta Braulio is :O

I have the books in spanish (my native language) but i’d love to buy this set to re-read them in english (only read HBP and DH in english)

  • http://twitter.com/PabloRV7 Pablo Ruiz V

Well, I have them all in American and British version but I guess this mean I’ll have to get them again.

  • ravenclaw1991

I doubt it’ll be something new that’s never been seen in the AMERICAN versions.. Seems like they would do that for the UK versions first. If its true, it’ll probably be only Pottermore stuff or something. I really hope so because even though the first book’s new cover is beautiful and I’m sure all the rest will be too, I really don’t want to buy them all again and that would just be crappy of them to put something small and new in there just to get people to buy it.

  • ladybirds

I refuse to buy them again whatever the bonus material is. I’ve got the first editions and bought the the ebooks as soon as they were available on Pottermore..

I just want the encyclopedia. :-/

    • Becca

The encyclopaedia that Jo’s said she has no plans to publish?

      • Jeff Dodge

If anyone believes that, it’s rubbish. We all know that once Pottermore is done, then the encyclopedia will be released. The only reason Jo changed her mind and said there won’t be one now is because then people wouldn’t go to Pottermore.

My wallet just started crying :(

  • guest

it could just be another drawing of snape …

  • Ultron

Am I the only one who is actually excited for the new covers? I personally don’t much care for Mary Grandpre’s illustrations. I like a few things of hers here and there. Sure they are the originals but I think the covers could be so much better. I’m not even sure what is going on in some of the covers. Plus, some of her chapter pictures are god awful. Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter to death, but I would very much like to see what another artist can bring to the table. Maybe this artist’s style of drawing will actually be consistent and not change how the characters look every book.

    • http://twitter.com/MusicandHouse J

Are the chapter pictures even going to be different? All the articles so far have just mentioned the covers.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001034209529 Lauren Dipple

what are chapter pictures?:S – the UK ones don’t have them and it is probably ,imho, better that way

        • Zack

At the beginning of each chapter, under the chapter heading, is a little illustration from each chapter. They are really nice :)

For example, here is one from DH:

    • GinnyWeasley002

I kinda agree with you. I, personally, am super excited, partly for the same reasons. Though, yes, I didn’t LOVE any of her work, there is that attachment that comes simply due to the fact that I grew up with them. I’ll probably be buying the new ones also.

  • georgina Phelps

As an English person, I will be pissed if the info in these new covers is unreleased elsewhere, am I meant to spend like £150 on an American box set that I would have to ship halfway across the world that I would never read except for the extra info? Of course I’m not going to do that, but I’ll be pissed off if I can’t get my hands on that info somewhere else.

  • Grace

gorgeous art in the picture up there!

  • TC.

can we just get a harry potter encyclopedia instead? :(

  • hpboy13

Ah, and that is the cue for the fans’ whining to begin! “I can’t believe that I personally am being forced at gunpoint to shell out $100, it’s as if Schlastic is trying to make money or something!”

Honestly, doubt I’ll get them – although my book Six paperback is in literally two pieces now – but they’ll be very pretty to look at!

  • http://www.facebook.com/gilad.winogron Gilad Winogron

Anybody knows where can I find all the new stories/background/extra info from Pottermore in one place that is not Pottermore?

    • SpiritWitch120

      Pottermore Wiki

      • http://www.facebook.com/gilad.winogron Gilad Winogron

  • Megan B

Why cant they just give us the encyclopedia already?

    • Becca

Um because Jo hasn’t written it?

      • Sara

How do you know that though? I mean nothing has been confirmed, but for all we know she could have started writing it already.

        • Becca

Because she says on her website that she’s not planning to publish it…

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Maybe the book will direct you to Pottermore somehow.

  • Hiccup

I’m really excited to see the new art — I love the old covers, and I doubt I will be getting the new set because my books are still perfectly functional, but I have no issues with them re-releasing the books with new covers. The Sorcerer’s Stone cover is absolutely gorgeous!

  • Andrew_ww

Individually the books are a great price. If Warner Bros. priced them it would probably be about $100 each or $1000 for the box set because they think of the highest possible price people will pay. That is when I have a problem with it.
This looks great for people who want new copies of the books or their first copies.

  • TheHamburglar

I must admit I’m a little annoyed by the majority of the comments. When Book of Spells came out, every single comment on here was about how much money they were charging for new information. No one cared that the game looked terrible, it was all about the price. Now they are potentially adding new information to the back of these books and people are saying they won’t buy it for 13-17 dollars a book? C’mon.

  • http://twitter.com/akacj7 Caroline J.

DH is $16.99 while OoTP and GoF are $14.99?? does it have a billion extra pages of bonus material?? anyway, i’ve got my own set of books. maybe i’ll gift it to my sister or something…

  • http://twitter.com/Jusstaylor Justine Woods

The box set is maybe 1 dollar less than the actually amount would be… thanks?

  • Plat

People, new cover art for classic books are released ALL THE TIME. This is simply to keep up with the setting trends, and so that the books are geared for the next generations of young readers. Nowhere does it say you have to buy all the books again, so stop complaining. Especially for someone trying to make money. They ARE a business after all…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=574963279 Shannon Cook

I am both excited for the new covers and the prospect of the bonus material. I have the UK versions as well as the US versions and will be adding this to my collection as well.

  • Glaciusx

Nope, sorry. You aren’t extorting money from me with new covers or “bonus material.” If I want that, I’ll just go to Pottermore or wait until it is leaked, thank you very much.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=636033419 Maritere Domínguez

    And Mary GrandPré ? :(

  • PhoenixTears94

I kind of wish I knew about this a month ago when I bought Sorcerer’s Stone for this 7 year old that I babysit. I have been planning on introducing her to Harry Potter for a while now and it kind of would have been perfect to just get her these new versions instead. Oh well… I would never get them for myself.

  • WeasleyWrock

I just wish they were all hardcover instead. I’ll probably buy them since my Chamber of Secrets copy is in pieces.

  • Teranel

I’ve heard a few other people say this, but I know that my copies of PoA and HBP are falling apart, so that’s the only reason I’d consider buying new copies. I’m very attached to the originals (childhood nostalgia and all that).

  • GoodFinder

One thing I was thinking about is buying a new set in paperback so
that I can keep reading the books without putting my original set
through more wear and tear (which are all first editions from the fourth
book on). So this is perfect for me.

  • Chris

Are these new editions going to have chapter art, like Mary GrandPre’s? The UK editions don’t… but I always loved the US’s artwork at the beginning of chapters!

  • stargazer

$14.99 for a paperback book? I miss the days when paperbacks on average were six or seven dollars. Not just Harry Potter books, but all books in general.

  • http://www.facebook.com/carlie.nelson.35 Carlie Nelson

Does anyone know if these are going to be hard cover?
