A little-cross fandom love went down while Emma Watson promoted The Perks of Being a Wallflower with Vanity Fair Italy.

The actress, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, knows what Kristen Stewart (Twilight) has to deal with under the media spotlight.

So it was with conviction that Emma Watson defends Kristen Stewart in this new interview. Watson was asked to comment on the media attacks Stewart had to put up with during her break up from Robert Pattinson last summer. Following Stewart’s announcement, the spotlight was turned on her vividly.

“Those who criticized her are the same people that think that being rich and famous is like being covered in some kind of magic powder that makes life perfect: Nothing can go wrong in your wonderful world,” said Watson. “For these people, Kristen deserves all the bad things that have been thrown at her because she had an amazing life and she ruined it.”

“I thought that the media picked on her in a very horrible way,” she continued. “Kristen is human, just like everybody else, and she’s so young.”

We admire Watson’s honest, and very correct, interpretation of how the story was handled by the media. Given that Stewart and Pattinson’s real relationship was dramatized on the big screen with the Bella and Edward characters, the scandal had carried extra weight.

Stewart admitted in July that she had cheated on long-time boyfriend Robert Pattinson with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Saunders. Some had speculated it was a publicity stunt ahead of Breaking Dawn – Part 2′s November release.

Thanks, E! Online.

I know some people might hear this from Watson and decide she’s right, but it pisses me off that this needs to be said. Wise up, people. And stay classy, Emma.

    • KleppMelk

You are absolutely right! Kristen was young and foolish, but that Saunders guy was a 40 year old married father, and he was her director. It smacks of someone who abused their position of power.

      • Marissa G.

It’s one thing to say that Kristen shouldn’t have been treated. by media and the general public, as ruthlessly as they did. Not because it’s her we are talking about, but because no one deserves that. BUT it is a whole ‘nother thing to act like she didn’t have at least SOME responsibility in what happen. How much? Who the hell knows besides her. But let’s not victimized her to the point where she’s no longer accountable for her actions. That’s precisely the kind of fanatical attitude that puts the “haters” up to speed.

        • KleppMelk

He was twice her age and practically her boss. I don’t know what Kristen’s feelings towards him were, but I’m pretty sure we’d be talking about a hole different kind of mess if she’d chosen to not fool around with him as well. One persons position of power over the other in a situation such as this matter! A grown man should know that better than a twenty-year-old.

Yet another reason why Emma Watson is so much classier than Stewart.

    • TheOneAndOnlyCliche

Why does it have to become about who’s classier than who? Kristen Stewart has done interviews where she basically defends the entire female species, as a whole, she calls the paparazzi out when they manage to get pictures of her sixteen year old co-stars birthday…but it’s only classy when Emma does it? The media really does screw around with Kristen Stewart a lot. She’s done the same thing as Emma, why isn’t she classy?

      • Winkyxx

I’m pretty sure Emma Watson didn’t cheat with the director over Robert Pattinson… so she hasn’t done the same thing..

  • Winkyxx

    emma is classy…..

  • Gary65

Indeed. I seem to remember a certain website that promoted a video that called Kristen a slut, reveled in this breach of her privacy & then attempted to call it humor. It’s amazing how opinions can change when the same idea comes in the right package.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003217053155 Liliana Baptista

it was only a breach of privacy until she admitted it to the newspapers… If she didn’t want people talking about it, she sould have remained silent…

      • Gary65

I somehow doubt her not talking about it would have stopped the paps from treating her the way they did. And a public apology is not an implied invitation to root around in every facet of someone’s private life.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003217053155 Liliana Baptista

It’s not an invitation, but she gave a peek into her personal life with that apology. If she didn’t want her personal life public, then she shouldn’t have made it public… There are so many celebrities that don’t talk to the press about their personal lives. Why does she?

          • Gary65

She doesn’t. 1 public statement that was 3 sentences long is hardly an all-access pass. That statement was the first public acknowledgement, by either of them, that they’d been dating in the first place.

She didn’t make it public. The story was already public by the time she commented on it. They had photos. How do you think the story got started?

Apart from that statement, point out one other time when she’s talked about her private life.

      • KleppMelk

I think this would be a catch-22 situation for Kstew. If she’d remained silent people would still have made all kinds of accusations against her. She’d be doomed if she didn’t, doomed if she did.

And a public apology is not the same as giving permission to having your private life plastered on frontages for everyone to see. The public treated her badly and that is not her fault.

  • Daughter of Eve

Could someone please explain why paparazzi is allowed take such liberties to invade people’s privacies?

  • Jessica

You hyphenated “little-cross” instead of “cross-fandom” Silly Andrew :p

  • KAT

Eww Rupert Sanders is like 20 years older then Kristen Stewart, oh well love has no limits.

  • http://benchpressabear.tumblr.com Joan

I’m surprised Emma elaborated so much on this topic with her answer, considering that the topic pertains other people… I mean, what she said was sweet and classy (and little naive as well) but I wouldn’t have expected her to even touch the subject. Slightly awkward, though well-intended.

    • Sam

Well Emma, Kristen and Jennifer Lawrence all met one another at TIFF apparently so who knows, maybe they became friends and she felt the need to stick up for Kristen when asked about the affair. Otherwise you’re right, it would be kind of weird that she had so much to say on the matter… So I’m guessing they are friends, but who knows.

    • Lucia

The article implies she was asked specifically about it so that would explain why she’s replied in such detail, and given that Kristen has gone through a similar experience with the sudden fame, Emma definitely understands what the pressure feels like.

      • http://benchpressabear.tumblr.com Joan

I never thought Emma randomly started talking about Kristen in an interview. Of course she was asked! I was surprised with the fact that she went into such detail with her response, mentioning specific details about the situation and everything. And, just in case, I’m not knocking her down for it, either. I understand where she’s coming from. I DO find it slightly weird, though… because, in a way, by answering in such detail, she’s putting Kristen’s and Rob’s name in the very same media they avoid. Again, slightly awkward, though well-intended.

Emma is really lucky not to have junk posted about her or at least no where as bad as Kristen. Emma is a very well respected young actress/model. Everybody sees Emma as this beautiful, well behaved young woman, who’s perusing her career and not doing anything stupid She’s kinda like a goody-two-shoes, only a very intelligent and sophisticated one. I love Emma!

  • davidtennettisawesome

Emma Watson is awesome, it would be hard to stand up for someone who gets picked on so frequently. I agree with Emma, I am not really “in love” with Twilight but people give christen so much crap about being a bad actor when they know nothing about her. and even if they think they know everything about her from gossip magazines, most of that stuff is fake assumptions.

  • davidtennettisawesome

why do people have to get in Christens business anyway, I am pretty sure that she lives a pretty normal teenage life (minus the fame) so why are people so angry about her all the time

  • http://xyue-mayx.deviantart.com/ Dreamer

I like my privacy, which is why I would never want to be ‘paparazzi’ famous.

  • http://hunyumstan.tumblr.com/ hunyum

As classy as it may sound, and as much as I love & respect Emma, I think she should have declined to answer this question.

  • ZofTheTwiHard

Thank you, Emma Watson. Thank you for just being an amazing human being.
